The 70s and early 80s were the glory years of Hong Kong kung-fu action movies, and as the genre was winding down, one late effort topped them all. The completely bananas Furious, starring martial arts legends Simon and Phillip Rhee, is about to be made widely available again after years of scarcity, thanks to the efforts of distributor Visual Vengeance. Simon, a fierce Kung Fu master, ventures into the city’s gritty underbelly for answers to his sister’s death. There, a cunning spiritual master deceives him, plotting to snatch his piece of an ancient amulet he shared with her. Unraveling the scheme, Simon plunges fists and feet first into a bone-crushing battle for the fate of the world… One thing you’re going to have to accept is that a high-def version of Furious was simply not available — the masters were done on videotape and Vv had to make do with them.

‘Famously incomprehensible’ are among the first words which come up when one Googles 1984′s martial arts picture Furious. ‘Famously incomprehensible’ is about right too, from the awful picture quality to the bizarre story, which is best described as martial artists vs aliens (after a fashion) battling for control of the universe. I had to Google that bit too, so incomprehensible is the story that I couldn’t quite tell what was going on most of the time.
Lovers of purposefully bad movies like The Room and Plan 9 From Outer Space should find much to celebrate in Furious, in which a pensive young fighter named Simon (Simon Rhee) attempts to fend off the forces of evil by repeatedly kicking them in the face.
