Mike Brody (Dennis Quaid) is working as a construction engineer at Seaworld, which has just installed an Undersea Kingdom exhibit, a set of four underwater tunnels that allow visitors to "view the wonders of the deep without ever getting wet." The complex has been built in SeaWorld's man-made lagoon, kept separate from the ocean by a steel gate. When the gate becomes compromised, a 10-foot Great White shark enters the park. Mike and his girlfriend, Dr Kathryn "Kay" Morgan (Bess Armstrong), the senior biologist, try to capture the shark but it dies. Little do they know that the shark's "mother", a 35-foot Great White, is also in the lagoon.

Jaws 3 is the third movie in the Jaws film series, preceded by Lo squalo (1975) (1975) and Lo squalo 2 (1978) (1978), both of which were based on characters created by American author Peter Benchley in his 1974 novel Jaws. The screenplay for Jaws 3 was written by American screenwriters Carl Gottlieb, Richard Matheson, and Guerdon Trueblood. It was followed by Lo squalo 4 - La vendetta (1987) (1987).

Jaws 3 centers around Michael and Sean Brody, who are now grown up. Mike is working at SeaWorld (Florida) and Sean (John Putch) is attending college in landlocked Colorado because he "hates the water." The events in the first two movies are referenced as "that shark attack...when we were kids in Amity." It's also mentioned in passing that their parents still live in Amity.

Although the film was released five years after Jaws 2, there's no reference to how long it's been. Since Sean is graduating from college and was about 11 in Jaws 2, a fair guess would be something between 10 and 15 years.

Jaws 3 can be viewed alone, even if you haven't seen the first two movies. However, the first two movies are rated by viewers as being considerably more scary, plus they give some depth into Mike and Sean's experiences with sharks on Amity Island.

Previously, the only official 3-D home video release was in Japan on Video Disc (VHD). 3-D DVDs were circulating on the grey market and all sites that support the grey market, including eBay. However, it has since been released on 3-D Blu-Ray. Curiously, the 3-D version is listed as a mere bonus feature on the Blu-Ray of the movie.
