Screambox has revealed the new films that are joining the Bloody Disgusting-powered horror streaming service in July 2025.

Uncle Sam wants you… dead! Celebrate Independence Day with the 4th of July slasher on Screambox. Follow it up with another cult classic from genre luminary William Lustig, Maniac.

Screambox Original horror series The Trouble with Tessa debuts with a two-episode premiere on July 15. The show follows a disgraced documentarian who unearths a box of old tapes and sets out to unravel the dark secrets buried in a seemingly perfect town’s past.

Other highlights include Dario Argento‘s surreal giallo The Stendhal Syndrome, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead‘s cosmic horror mind-bender The Endless, ’70s video nasty The Toolbox Murders, and record-breaking South Korean supernatural horror The Wailing.

Larry Fessenden’s career in horror films will be honored at the 2024 Brooklyn Horror Film Festival (Bhff).

The indie filmmaker, who launched his career with a Frankenstein story in 1991’s “No Telling,” will be celebrated with the Leviathan Award to mark his cinematic achievements. A special screening of Fessenden’s 1996 film “Habit” will also be part of the ceremony. Fessenden will participate in a Q&a with Bhff alum Jenn Wexler.

The Leviathan Award, Brooklyn Horror’s first and only tribute award, was created in 2023 to honor the luminaries of horror and acknowledge their monstrous contributions to the genre.

Fessenden is credited by the festival for being an “irreplaceable” voice in filmmaking. Fessenden is the founder of Glass Eye Pix, which has sustained indie horror in New York for three decades and counting.

The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading fest for independent cinema, has announced its 2022 lineup.

The 29th Oldenburg Festival will kick off Sept. 14 with The Ordinaries, the first feature from German director Sophie Linnenbaum. The meta tragicomedy stars Fine Sendel as Paula, a simple Supporting Character in a repressive three class-society where there are Main Characters, Supporting Characters and the untouchable Outtakes. The Ordinaries premiered at the Munich festival this year, winning Linnebaum and her production team the German Cinema New Talent Award.

Mickey Reece is a filmmaker who, despite having made over 20 movies, has only had one theatrically released. It’s a bit of a sad irony how the timing worked out for Climate of the Hunter, initially screening at Fantastic Fest in 2019 before being delayed until theaters opened up in December last year. But in that messiness, it feels like it got a little lost, like so many great indie films did in the foggy Covid release landscape, though a new streaming home on Shudder has brought it more attention.

Climate of the Hunter, as the title suggests, is an examination of predatory men, personified in the film by Wesley, played with a sinister charm by Ben Hall. Two sisters make up the bulk of the rest of the characters, Alma (Ginger Gilmartin), a woman discharged from a mental institution an unspecified time ago, and Elizabeth (Mary Buss), who works in D.

Sacrificing oneself for love is a too cute and too familiar interaction thrown in movies like strawberry jam. It is simple, ordinary, and expected. Romance in horror films, however, is chaotic, bloody, and revolting. Horror and eroticism are an unexpected sweetness, so go ahead and serve that with your morning toast. Monsters have indulged in romance with mortals as we have seen in The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) to more recent movies like The Shape of Water (2017). It’s a classic story about a beautiful woman and a hideous beast, but even cinema changed the familiar storyline.

The 1970s opened an endless coffin of vampire films about love, sexuality, and the survival of the fittest. Open relationships, casual sex, gender fluid romances, and bloodthirsty villains painted the theater towns crimson red. The decade brought light to cultural issues that never seemed to be reflected on the mirrors of prior vampire films.

Something almost beyond comprehension is happening on October 31st… and two men want to do a couple of podcast episodes about it. This is the Halloween Parade… volume 1.

It’s been awhile since the world has seen a new comedy from Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. That all changes this month with Amazon Prime’s new releases for May 2020. That’s right, leading the pack of Amazon originals on May 1 is Daniels’ Upload, a comedy about digital afterlives. That should inject a healthy dose of sci-fi “middletopia” into our lives.

Also premiering in May is the second season of Amazon Prime’s twisty drama Homecoming. This season starts Janelle Monáe and premieres on May 22. After that, the rest of Amazon’s originals this month are fairly film-centric. The Goldfinch, Seberg, and The Vast of Night are the notable original films arriving in May.

It goes without saying that the pandemic is keeping everyone stuck inside with little to do besides watch television, play video games, and read. Here’s some great news, though: There’s plenty coming to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime in May, so put away the books and the games, and get ready to binge some excellent shows and films.

On Netflix, you can catch some notable comedy entries next month like the Jim Carrey-led Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Fun with Dick and Jane, while action-horror fans may be delighted to hear that multiple Underworld films will be dropping on the service. The lesser-known Jarhead trilogy will be available on the 1st, and the first two pics in the Back to the Future trilogy will join the third film for streaming. Though much of the entertainment industry is currently paralyzed by Coronavirus and the lockdowns imposed to curb its spread, streaming services are now making out like bandits. Netflix and Amazon Prime both have reported record viewing figures, though that isn’t particularly surprising given that they have an almost literally captive audience.

Arrow Video continues to reconstitute the filmography of Spanish genre filmmaker Jose Ramon Larraz with his final English language thriller, Deadly Manor (originally released on VHS as Savage Lust), the final in a triptych of slasher films set in the Us (but filmed in Spain) in the late 1980s to early 1990s. Following on the heels of the label’s glorious box set of his earlier works, plus his 1988 title Edge of the Axe (released under his pseudonym Joseph Braunstein), this final thriller from the underrated director is decidedly dull and derivative affair, borrowing heavily from a variety of classics, everything from The Old Dark House (1932) to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974).…...

February’s home media releases are ending in a big way, with 20 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto various formats this week. Leading the pack this Tuesday are Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which comes home on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD, as well as Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space, which will be available on both Blu and DVD. Scream Factory is showing Mary Lambert’s Pet Sematary Two some love this week with their Collector’s Edition release, and for those of you into wacky, obscure cult classics, you’ll definitely want to pick up Vinegar Syndrome’s Blu-ray for Spookies.

John Karlen, an actor who appeared in “Dark Shadows” and “Cagney & Lacey,” died of congestive heart failure on Wednesday. He was 86.

His death was reported on Twitter by the Dark Shadows News account: “We are sad to report the death of #DarkShadows actor John Karlen, who played Willie Loomis, the unforgettable foil to Barnabas Collins. John died on January 22 in hospice care in Burbank, California. He was 86 had suffered a number of health setbacks over the past decade…”

Karlen is best known for playing Willie Loomis on “Dark Shadows,” a supernatural-themed soap opera from the 1960s. He ended up playing the character over 179 episodes. He is also known for his role as Harvey Lacey in the CBS sitcom, “Cagney & Lacey,” which ran from 1982 to 1988, where he played the husband of Tyne Daly’s Mary Beth Lacey.

Karlen was nominated...

John Karlen, the Dark Shadows actor who loosed a 200-year-old vampire from a chained coffin and two decades later won an Emmy Award for playing a detective’s husband on Cagney & Lacey, died yesterday of congestive heart failure in hospice in Burbank, California. He was 86.

Karlen’s death was announced via Twitter on the Dark Shadows News page. The actor had been in declining health for a decade. Last March, the ShadowGram Dark Shadows newsletter posted that Karlen had suffered a stroke.

Kathryn Leigh Scott, the actress-turned-author who played Dark Shadows‘ heroine (and frequent victim) Maggie Evans, has written books about the show and participated in the show’s many annual fan festivals, wrote on her blog, “Memories, memories… this morning I’m awash in memories of darling John Karlen, who left us yesterday. I’m told he passed peacefully, for which I’m grateful, but hardly seems in character for our Johnny.

Dull vampire pix were once as ubiquitous as zombie pix are now, but when a good one came along we’d certainly take notice. The predatory Fran and Miriam are a wholly new twist on the ‘Wicked Lady’ highwayman theme — the picture transcends the softcore horror genre with class and style. Fringe director José Ramón Larraz found himself filming in England, and his output outclassed what were passing for Eurotrash horror epics across the channel. How did he do it? Artsploitation Films is getting set for Halloween. Their latest film release is titled Vampyres. From director Victor Matellano, the film is a remake of Joseph Larraz's 1974 film. In both films, two lesbian vampires hold a man in a basement as three campers investigate their property. The film will be released mid-October. Exclusive: UK’s Soda Pictures has picked up remake of cult classic Vampyres.

Paris-based Reel Suspects has acquired Macedonian director Vardan Tozija’s crime-drama Amok [pictured] about an introverted, abandoned teenager who goes on to lead a gang of violent, feral lost boys.

“It’s a really powerful film, a Macedonian version of the City of God. It came to me through my network and I’ve been following it since the project stage,” says Reel Suspects CEO Matteo Lovadina, who is aiming for a Toronto international premiere for the film.

The picture stars first-time actor Martin Gjorgoski as Phillip, a rough, marginalised teenager, who is forced to participate in a terrifying encounter by a corrupt policeman while in the care of social services.

Irrevocably damaged, he is hell-bent on seeking violent revenge on society, enlisting the other “lost boys” in the tough juvenile adoption centre he calls home.

Sitting with Robert Englund deep in the bowels of a gilded London hotel, it becomes obvious just what a great storyteller he is. As he reminisces about his early acting career in such films as Five Easy Pieces or Hustle, or goes even further back to his childhood brushes with the horror genre, he talks in a soothing, sonorous voice that is a million miles away from his signature role of Freddy Krueger.

Then again, Englund doesn't look or sound like the character in his latest movie, either. In The Last Showing, a psychological horror thriller written and directed by the UK's Phil Hawkins, Englund plays Stuart, a once proud projectionist who, thanks to the advent of digital cinema, finds himself busted down to the lowly...

In 1974 director José Ramón Larraz released a blood-soaked erotic film called Vampyres, which told the tale of a lesbian vampire couple who would waylay and abduct various passers-by, both male and female, to hold them captive at their rural manor... as a means to make them midnight snacks.

Now director Victor Matellano is back with a remake of Vampyres, which stars Marta Flich (Omnivores) and Almudena Leon (Wax) alongside Christian Stamm, Veronica Bacorn, Caroline Munro, Anthony Rotsa, Victor Vidal, Luis Hacha, Alina Nastise and Remedios Darkin.

Larraz, who died in September 2013, took part in the pre-production of the new movie.

It entails a certain taste to enjoy many Euro horror films. A lot of them are straight horror films but even more than that feature gallons of sleaze upon sleaze – a lot of sexualised violence against women which makes them quite lurid and seedy.

But most hardcore Euro horror fans appreciate the kinkiness of the genre as that is what gives it its distinctive flavour. Where would we be without Jess Franco’s pubic hair zoom shots? Jean Rollin’s sapphic vampires? Lucio Fulci’s crotch stabbings? A hell of a lot more bored we would be.

My taste in Euro horror may be a lot more tawdry than your own taste in Euro horror. You may watch more high brow films than me, but that is okay, I would love to hear from you at the comment section!

1974′s Vampyres marks another entry into the lesbian vampire sub-genre. At the time, the film was a controversial hit, in part due to it being censored in many countries where it was released. It’s not the sleaziest nor the most high brow take on the exploitation of lesbian vampires, and its methodic pacing does it no favors. However, the film does have two leading actresses who bring a lot to the film, and a director who is able to set a strange and eerie mood, helping things along when they need it most.

The plot to Vampyres is very similar to the urban legend of the female hitchhiker who leads male drivers to their deaths. Two beautiful women, Fran and Miriam (Marianne Morris and Anulka Dziubinska, billed as ‘Anulka’), catch rides with lonely men back to their deserted estate only to keep them captive and drain them of their blood.

Marking its third year of bringing the fear, Sheffield’s biggest horror film festival, Celluloid Screams, returns to the Showroom Cinema for another weekend of bloody thrills and spills. Boobs and Blood will take place in Los Angeles, CA from September 24th-26th at the world famous New Beverly Cinema. It’s best summed up as an event dedicated to fans of Grindhouse, Psychotronic Kitsch and Japanese Pink Films. There will be many rarities at this festival, too. For one, there will be a screening of the only remaining print of Fred Olen Ray’s 80s classic Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (Ray and star Michelle Bauer will also be in attendance).

Grimsrud may not be an axe murderer per se, but you’ve got to respect the way in which this guy chooses to solve problems. After an irreparable altercation with his partner in crime, Grimsrud puts his conflict resolution skills to good use courtesy of a hatchet and a woodchipper.

Chicago – José Ramón Larraz’s 1974 cult classic “Vampyres” isn’t about vampires any more than “Troll 2” is about trolls. It’s a flat-out porn flick with fangs, or at least very unnatural teeth. The filmmakers harbor no artistic aspirations apart from terrifying and titillating their audience. Perhaps I’m merely jaded by the plethora of sex and violence in our modern media, but I found the film to be a complete snooze, even in its much-ballyhooed uncensored version.

Three minutes of the picture have been routinely cut by censors, primarily because of its lesbian content, and this Blu-Ray release restores the missing footage. This will mean quite a lot to fans of the film, and not much to anyone else. Though the film is competently made, and holds a certain campy charm, its repetitive plot grows quickly tiresome. It mainly consists of characters wandering around in the darkness, inching...

This week sees the release of several new movies and TV shows, some for the first time ever on Blu-ray. Of the ones coming out this week, we’re excited for not as many as last week. But still, the release of An Education, Collateral and Sherlock Holmes (pictured above with Robert Downey, Jr and Jude Law) is reason enough to be excited. Director/producer Lee Daniels, a former personal manager/producer-turned-filmmaker, brings a kitchen sink authenticity to the proceedings, along with a cast of famous powerhouse performers, who manage to disappear into their roles. The Final Girl: A Few Thoughts on Feminism and Horror By Donato Totaro

One of the more important, if not groundbreaking, accounts/recuperations of the horror film from a feminist perspective is the 1993 Carol Clover's "Men, Women, and Chainsaws". One of the book's major points concerns the structural positioning of what she calls the Final Girl in relation to spectatorship. While most theorists label the horror film as a male-driven/male-centered genre, Clover points out that in most horror films, especially the slasher film, the audience, male and female, is structurally 'forced' to identify with the resourceful young female (the Final Girl) who survives the serial attacker and usually ends the threat (until the sequel anyway.) So while the narratively dominant killer's subjective point of view may be male within the narrative,the male viewer is still rooting for the Final Girl to overcome the killer. We can see this...
