For lifelong cinephiles, the kinds of folks determined to experience as many movies as the medium has to offer before they hit the soil, revisits are an extravagance. Sometimes, they're essential. Jean-Luc Godard's films are dense with ideas and, especially later in his career, visual information. Roger Corman, the influential director, producer, and studio executive of independent film, has died at the age of 98.

Known as “The Pope of Pop Cinema,” Corman helmed hundreds of low-budget independent films over the course of his seven-decade career. Some of his notable credits included The Little Shop of Horror, Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, Death Race 2000, A Bucket of Blood, and X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes.

As a producer, Corman also gave opportunities to many young directors and actors who would become future Hollywood legends in their own right. Directors like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Ron Howard, and Jonathan Demme all worked with Corman early on in their careers. Later, these directors put Corman in their own films: he made cameos in Scorsese’s The Godfather Part II, Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, and Howard’s Apollo 13.

“This is the only person to run a studio who knows how to make a movie,” director Allan Arkush exclaimed, hailing his former boss Roger Corman in front of a sold-out crowd at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica Saturday evening.

Now 97 years old, the unbelievably prolific Pope of Pop Cinema was the guest of honor at the genre-focused Beyond Fest, in partnership with American Cinematheque. Corman joined for a panel with Arkush, fellow directors Ron Howard, Joe Dante and Amy Holden Jones and producer Jon Davison — all of whom Corman helped launch into Hollywood under his independent production and distribution company New World Pictures, founded in 1970. After directing more than 45 features, Corman decided to create his own banner, which would go on to help jumpstart the careers of Jonathan Demme, Curtis Hanson and countless other talents.

Don’t be fooled: the Foo Fighters’ “Studio 666” is not some extended music video gimmick put out by Dave Grohl and company. It’s a real horror movie with a legit runtime, a plot and a script. I love Joe Dante. He has directed some hugely entertaining films and is an aficionado of the same genres I adore. Additionally, like most film directors, he is highly versed in cinemaspeak. My introduction to his work came in 1983 when I bought his werewolf classic The Howling (1981) sight-unseen on RCA’s now extinct Ced system and immediately took to it. That failed stylus-based videodisc format was severely limited to only several thousand titles, so I had to rely on VHS to catch up with his Hollywood Boulevard (1976), Piranha (1978), and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (1979) in the mid-80’s following theatrical viewings of Twilight Zone: The Movie in 1983 and Gremlins in 1984. For some reason, his July 12, 1985-released outing Explorers, which concerns the escapades of three young boys making their way through the battlefield of junior high school, escaped my list of...

Without Brian Wilson, the world would be devoid of West Coast anthems like “California Girls,” “Good Vibrations” and “Surfin’ U.S.A.”

The musician and record producer, who founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl, as well as their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, is the subject of a new documentary, “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road.”

With nearly 3,000 fans in attendance, Dread Central hit this past Sunday’s 10th Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA, and we got an eye and earful. Read on for our report, photo gallery, and a video clip from the event.

Hard to believe that The Rolling Stones, half of The Beatles and The Who, and a dozen more bands that started a full decade before The Ramones (1974) have outlived them, and in many cases are still touring. They were one of my favorite punk bands ever... and with the recent death of Tommy Ramone (nee Thomas Erdelyi), all four original members of one of New York's finest bands ever, we are not "glad to see you go." The first three -- lead singer Joey (nee Jeffrey Hyman, died 2001), bass player Dee Dee (nee Douglas Colvin, died 2002), and guitarist Johnny (nee John Cummings, died 2004) -- all died only within six years after calling it quits.

They did not go gently into the night. Their off-stage dramas kept them from maintaining their once shared friendships.

Ironic isn't it? The original Ramones, the guys from "Rockaway Beach" that wanted to be sedated, are all gone.

P.J. Soles Celebrates the return of Halloween with the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray, in stores today!

While horror fans still have just over one month to go before the Samhain holiday, they can get into the spirit a little early by celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the horror classic Halloween. Anchor Bay Home Entertainment is releasing the an all-new Blu-ray, which arrives September 24. Directed by John Carpenter on a budget of just $325,000, the classic went on to re-define the genre as we know it, while spawning a myriad of sequels that followed the legacy of Michael Myers. I recently had the chance to speak with P.J. Soles, who played Laurie Strode's (Jamie Lee Curtis) friend Lynda van der Klock (and who also played Norma in the original Carrie), about her experiences on the set, how she won the role, working with John Carpenter, and so much more. In case you didn't know, Gremlins director Joe Dante is working on a biopic about legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman, the man responsible for films like Wasp Woman, The Raven, Pit and the Pendulum, Piranha, Rock 'N' Roll High School and Death Race 2000. At one time, Colin Firth was going to play the producer in the film called The Man with the Kaleidoscope Eyes, but now a really surprising casting change has taken place. The Telegraph (Bleeding Cool) recently spoke with Corman, who revealed that director and occasional actor Quentin Tarantino will be playing Corman in the developing biopic. Though there's not an exact quote from Corman explaining the casting, he does divulge some story details: "It’s the story of how I made The Trip in the 1960s about LSD. It starred Jack Nicholson in one of his first roles and I took LSD so I knew what it was all about.

This entertaining low-budget favorite gets some well-deserved respect from the folks at Criterion. A gelatinous creature from outer space begins to devour the inhabitants of a small town. Each time it consumes a new body, it grows bigger. A couple of teens (including the wooden Steve McQueen) attempt to warn the town and save the population from certain blech! Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. directs the mayhem with a sure hand while Bart Sloane's great special effects still pack a punch. Followed by the bizarre comedy sequel, Son of Blob, in the early ’70s (directed by Larry Hagman!) and a great, underrated remake in 1988 by Chuck Russell.

The Darkness: Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars in The Last Exorcism director Stamm's The Darkness. She portrays an American student looking after her tutor's two children in a remote English manor house. She soon comes to believe that she and the children are being haunted when their lives are threatened by mysterious events. Megan Holley penned the script. Occupant Entertainment's Joe Neurauter and Felipe Marino and Management 360's Ben Forkner produce while genre-specialty banner Xyz Films, whose Gareth Evans helmer The Raid was a huge success, is executive producer.

"High School Musical" (2006): The Disney Channel movie exploded into a phenomenon. Just the "HSM" backpack invasion made its tween fans look like an army. Roger Corman is a Hollywood legend. The Oscar-winning producer might be the single-most prolific filmmaker ever with over 300 movies to his name. Along the way, he provided a big break to Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson and many others. His "cheap and fast" approach to sci-fi, horror and action has given us timeless cult classics like "The Little Shop of Horrors," "Death Race 2000," "Caged Heat" and "Galaxy of Terror." However, Corman is hoping to top himself yet again with his first 3D movie, "Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader." Considering it's where most of us (bar the weird home-schooled kids) spend our crucial formative years, where we have our first fights, our first loves, our first tentative steps into adulthood, it's no surprise that high school has long been a popular setting for movies. A range of genres (though generally leaning towards comedy) have taken place in those hallways, particularly from the 1980s onwards, when John Hughes, among others, made an entire career out of the lives and loves of 15-18 year olds.

It's hard to overestimate Roger Corman's significance. As the director of low-budget fare like It Conquered the World and Creature from the Haunted Sea, Corman is often regarded as a schlockmeister. And though that may be true, Corman is also a groundbreaking filmmaker without whom the landscape of contemporary cinema would look very different.

Thankfully, to remind us of Corman's immense importance to Hollywood comes Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, an in-depth new documentary from Alex Stapleton — and I cannot think of a better Christmas gift.
