- Jennie MacLaine: Oh God! You know what you want better than me. Maybe I can't analyze and theorize and speculate on why we behave as we do, and react as we do, and suffer guilt and love and hate. You read all those books, not me. But one thing I do know, I know how I feel. I can stand here and watch you try to destroy the most important thing in my life, wanting to just smash your face with my fists because you don't even make the slightest effort to offer happiness. And still, I know that I love you. It's always so clear to me. It's where I get all my strength from. You mean so much to me. I'm willing to suffer your insults and abuse and insensitivities because I know that's what you need to prove that I'm not gonna leave you. I can't promise you I'm not gonna die, George. But if you want to test me, go ahead! Test me! If you wanna leave - leave, but I am not going to be the one that walks away. I won't be able to take it forever, but I can take it for tonight and I can take it for next week. Next month, maybe I'll be a little bit shaky. But let me tell you something, no matter what you say about me, I feel so good about myself. Better than I felt when I ran from Cleveland and was scared to death of New York. And better than I felt when Gus used to come home at 2 o'clock in the morning just to change his clothes. And better than I felt the night before we got married and I thought I wasn't good enough for you! Well, I am! I am wonderful! I am nuts about me! And if you are stupid enough to throw someone sensational like me aside, you don't deserve as good as you've got! Oh, I am so tired of running from people and places and relationships! I want a home, I want a family and I want a career. I want everything, and there is no harm in wanting it, George, because there isn't a chance in hell we're gonna get it all anyway. But if you don't want it, you got even less chance than that. Everybody's out there runnin' around trying to find the easy answers. God, if they don't find 'em at home, hop into some other bed and maybe you'll come up lucky - maybe. You will be surprised at some of the maybes I have seen lately. Well, none of that is for me.
