Steven Spielberg Flew to New York for Every Episode of ‘SNL’s First Season

Gabriel Labelle was under strict instructions from Saturday Night director Jason Reitman: No talking to Lorne Michaels before playing him in the movie. “I wanted to meet everyone and interview everyone,” Labelle told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. But “Jason wanted us to do as minimum work as possible. He didn’t want direct re-creations of these cast members and of these people.”

Okay, fine. Labelle wouldn’t talk to Michaels. But Reitman didn’t say he couldn’t talk to Steven Spielberg. And if you don’t think such a conversation would be useful, you’d be wrong.

Labelle was on the Universal lot doing costume fittings when he stopped by the Amblin office to see his Fabelmans director. “I just walk into his office, and it was good to see him,” Labelle said. “And as soon as I sit down, he’s like, ‘So this is...

X-Men ’97 and Deadpool & Wolverine Art Books Are Up For Preorder
Image
Fans of X-Men ’97 and Deadpool & Wolverine will have a chance to take a look behind the scenes with two new books that explore the art of the Marvel franchises.

X-Men ’97: The Art and Making of the Animated Series won’t come out until April 29, 2025, but it may be worth the wait. It will be interesting to see if the book shows various evolutions of character redesigns, such as Magneto’s, Storm’s, and Rogue’s mysterious missing butt.

Is it possible that the book has been delayed so long due to the current drama involving the show’s creator, Beau DeMayo? Allegedly, the second season of X-Men ’97 has undergone many rewrites to remove DeMayo completely from the series.

The Masked Singer Season 11 Premiere's Shocking Unmasking Is "Funniest Reveal" Ever
Image
Fans were thrilled by Kevin Hart's unmasking, calling it the "funniest reveal" on The Masked Singer. Kevin's energy and voice gave away his identity as Book. The Masked Singer fans took to social media to admit that Book's identity was "really obvious."

Kevin Hart was just unmasked during The Masked Singer season 11 premiere, which is now considered the "funniest reveal" in the history of the show. The Masked Singer has featured so many celebrities over the years; every so often, one of them absolutely stuns the panelists and studio audience, both for good and bad. To kick off The Masked Singer season 11, Goldfish, Starfish, Ugly Sweater, Lovebird and Book took to the stage to perform songs like Olivia Rodrigo's "Vampire," Madonna's "Material Girl" and Tina Turner's "The Best." After Book performed, he ended up taking off his costume, revealing himself to be Kevin.

‘The Masked Singer’ Season 11 Premiere Opens With a Superstar Reveal: Here’s Who Was Under the ‘Book’ Costume
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 11 season premiere of “The Masked Singer,” which aired March 6 on Fox.

“The Masked Singer” kicked off its 11th season on Wednesday night — and in perhaps the show’s most unusual reveal ever, comedian Kevin Hart brought his prank war with host Nick Cannon to the show.

Hart brought his one-night-only appearance to “The Masked Singer” as Book, singing the song “So Sick,” by Ne-Yo (who happened to be the Season 10 winner on the show). The performance… was a bit pitchy, dawg. At the end of the song, the show’s panelists seemed to dig it. But after Robin Thicke quickly I.D.’ed Hart, the star took off his costume to reveal himself.

“This is a prank, you had no idea I was coming here Nick, and guess what, there’s nothing you can do about it,...

Tina Turner’s ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ to Feature Even More of Simply the Best
Image
Three decades ago, Tina Turner reclaimed her history with the soundtrack album for the movie What’s Love Got to Do With It. She re-recorded hits she’d originally cut with her abusive ex-husband, Ike Turner so that they could stand on their own as testaments to her survival. These included “Nutbush City Limits,” “Proud Mary,” and “A Fool in Love.” She was in her early 50s, her voice still sounded great, and the album became a hit. Now, the record will be even bigger when it’s reissued on April 26 as an expanded box set.

Beyoncé in Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé (2023)
Box Office: Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Eyes $21M-Plus Opening as ‘Napoleon,’ ‘Wish’ Fall Off a Cliff
Beyoncé in Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé (2023)
Beyoncé’s new concert film is delivering the goods at the box office, where it’s headed for the biggest early December opening in two decades.

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé — which Beyoncé wrote, directed and produced — could now earn $21 million to $24 million in its debut after it was graced with glowing reviews and a coveted A+ CinemaScore. The film earned $11.5 million on Friday, including $5 million in Thursday previews

Distributor AMC Theatres — also home of blockbuster Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour — is remaining more conservative in suggesting a $20 million opening.

More than 70 percent of Friday’s audience was female, while 50 percent of the audience were Black moviegoers, in a win for diverse programming.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is notoriously sluggish, and Renaissance is a welcome gift for exhibitors. To date, the biggest opening for the first weekend of December belongs to Tom Cruise’s The Last Samurai ($24.3 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Max: Are Any Discovery Shows Worth Watching?
Image
Max has had some time to settle in for streaming audiences, and while the initial rollout wasn't flawless, it's still a decent start for the controversial rebrand. Following this rebrand, a plethora of additional content has been added to the service — along with removing plenty of other content, but that's neither here nor there. Most notably, a wide swath of Discovery brand content, from TLC dating shows to endless competitions from Food Network, is now available to watch on Max. It's so wide it's actually outnumbering everything else on Max.

If you care more about prestige television than its easy-viewing counterparts, you may feel inclined to outright ignore this massive influx of content. But we encourage you to not be so hasty. Underneath the piles of generic house-flipping shows and survival competitions are some interesting shows from Discovery's past and present worth looking at. We've assembled a few examples from Discovery Channel,...

Schitt's Creek Was Simply The Best Thanks To Tina Turner
Image
Sometimes a song and a piece of fiction become entwined forever, ensuring that fans cannot think about one without the other: think of "Reservoir Dogs" and "Stuck in the Middle With You," "Grosse Point Blank" and "Blister in the Sun," "Shaun of the Dead" and "Don't Stop Me Now." Then there's the Canadian comedy series "Schitt's Creek" and its connection to the late, great Tina Turner's "The Best." The 1989 song is a big, powerful pop-rock anthem that lets Turner really show off her vocal skills, but it also has some beautiful and deeply romantic lyrics. Written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman, the song was first performed by Bonnie Tyler (best known for her rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart"), but Turner's version was the ultimate, and "Schitt's Creek" turned it into something even more special by making it the song that united two people in love.

On "Schitt's Creek,...

Tina Turner Ushered In Pierce Brosnan's James Bond With GoldenEye's Killer Theme Song
Image
The news came in today that music icon Tina Turner has died at the age of 83. Fans all over the world are hitting music sites to listen to and remember this incredible singer who has given us decades of hits, from "What's Love Got to Do With It?" to "Proud Mary" and "The Best," just to name a few. But one of Turner's performances graced the soundtrack to the 1995 James Bond film "GoldenEye" starring Pierce Brosnan, kicking off an entirely new era for 007.

The song -- also entitled "GoldenEye" -- features Turner at her best, and the simplicity of the music video, helmed by prolific video director Jake Scott (son of Sir Ridley Scott), is powerful. The glamorous Turner appears in a stunning white dress and belts out the tune in her gorgeous voice, telling a pretty dark story as she does so. The whole thing is intercut...

Tina Turner, legendary singer and actress, dead at 83
Image
Tina Turner, one of the greatest singers of all time, is dead at 83. Deadline reports she “died today after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.” Mere words can’t do justice to what an absolute legend she was, with a career that made her a top draw that spanned generations. She was a household name if you were a child of the 80s, but guess what? She was also a household name in the 60s, 70s, 90s and 2000s too. Arguably her greatest period as a solo artist was the eighties when the former soul diva reimagined herself as a rock goddess, topping the charts with a string of iconic hits, including “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “Private Dancer,” “The Best,” “Better Be Good to Me” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” That last song was the lead single off the Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome soundtrack,...

The Guy Who Sang ‘That One Night’ on the ‘Dinner Party’ Episode of ‘The Office’ Does, Indeed, (Yacht) Rock
Image
Todd Fancey’s vocals have been heard by millions, as the multi-instrumentalist for the New Pornographers and as the balladeer behind “That One Night,” the song that’s central to what is arguably the most cringe episode of “The Office,” 2008’s “Dinner Party.”

The hilarious, earnestly yearning delivery isn’t all that true to Fancey’s artistry, though his new album, “Star Dreams” (out today), nods to the year 1980, which also saw the release of Benny Mardones’ “Into the Night,” a Yacht Rock classic not dissimilar in sentiment.
