Madrid -- Sir Ian McKellen will receive the Donostia Award for lifetime achievement at the 57th San Sebastian International Film Festival, organizers announced Friday.
Citing his "tremendous versatility" that "has led him to play enormously varying parts, from the Shakespeare classics to modern superheroes," the festival said the two-time Oscar nominated actor would receive the prize Sept. 23.
With a career that bridges theater, film and television, McKellen has acted in some 250 plays in his 50 years of acting, including such roles as Richard III, Edward II, Hamlet, Romeo, and Dr Faustus for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
A late-blooming film career found him filming back-to-back "Apt Pupil" (Bryan Singer, 1998) and "Gods and Monsters" (Bill Condon, 1998), winning an Oscar nomination and the San Sebastian's Silver Shell for the best actor. He later achieved worldwide fame with "X-Men," "The Lord of the Rings" and "The DaVinci Code."
San Sebastian runs from Sept. 18-27 in Spain's northern Basque region.
