Hu xia jian chou

According to tycoon Run Run Shaw, his filmdirector Chang Cheh wrote this TIGER BOY for male newcomer actor Wang Yu, but Shaw wans't too sure about it, because the Wuxiapian genre always had female stars. So Shaw decided to risk as less as possible and produced it in 1965 with a mere 60.000 dollars budget and black-and-white photography (courtesy by Hsu Tseng Hung, who then directed 19 movies). If the result had been bad he would have sent him waste without a release. The movie was released with a late in 12/16/1966 and did well at HK b.o. convincing Shaw and Chang Cheh to continue on a male-oriented Wushapian adding technicolor and blood-scenes in three more movies: MAGNICIENT TRIO, THE TRAIL OF THE BROKEN BLADE and the record-breaker THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (1967). Sadly no copy of this seminal TIGER BOY left in Shaws archives. The cast included others two newcomers: Lo Lieh (FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH) and Cheng Lei. Wang Yu, Lieh and Lei were the only three aspiring actors who won a Shaw contest in the begin of 60's. Wu Ma (the swordsman-exorcist in A CHINESE GHOST STORY), Feng Yi (the fat samurai in FIST OF FURY) are also in the cast.
