In 1960, Reynolds memorably played a WWII officer who can’t ignore an ominous light on the faces of his men destined to be killed in the acclaimed Twilight Zone season-one episode “The Purple Testament.”

On the big screen, he appeared in the...

Sir Christopher Lee Dead At Age 93; Personal Reflections On A Legend Of The Film Industry
Artist Jeff Marshall created this tribute to Sir Christopher Lee, which was presented to him by Cinema Retro publishers Lee Pfeiffer and Dave Worrall.

By Lee Pfeiffer

Sir Christopher Lee, the acclaimed British actor, passed away last Sunday in London. He was 93 years old. The family waited to make the announcement until all family members could be notified. Lee was an early contributor to Cinema Retro magazine and periodically provided interviews and personal insights into the making of his films. We, along with movie lovers everywhere, mourn his loss. Lee was more often than not associated with the horror film genre, a fact that often frustrated him. He would routinely point out that he made many diverse films and played many diverse roles in movies of all genres, from comedies to westerns. For many years he was most closely associated with the films of Hammer studios, the British production firm...

Close up: Lars von Trier declares himself persona non grata
Could Lars von Trier have finally destroyed his own career?

The big story

Every week is Lars von Trier week – especially if you're Lars von Trier. But the Danish director, normally so adept at winding up the press and film industry, may have finally put his foot irretrievably in it, have gone that bit too far, gone off the deep end once too often. When he made a crack at Cannes back in May about how he could "understand" Adolf Hitler, I bet he didn't think he'd be fielding questions from the Danish police five months later.

But that is what happened last Wednesday, according to a statement issued by von Trier himself. He said his local bobbies were acting on a "preliminary charge" issued by French prosecutors after his Cannes press conference. Even now, it's not clear if von Trier himself has the full story: the French authorities have...

The Desert Fox: is it the real Rommel?
This 1951 film about the controversial second world war German field marshal casts him as more foe than friend of the Führer

Director: Henry Hathaway

Entertainment grade: B+

History grade: B

Erwin Rommel led several German campaigns during the second world war, most notably in north Africa. Late in the war, he was implicated in a plot to kill Adolf Hitler. When it failed, Hitler obliged him to commit suicide.

War

The film begins with Rommel (James Mason)'s defeat by the British, Free French and Americans in north Africa. Nothing is shown of the campaigns that made his name (and his nickname, Desert Fox, the film's ill-fitting title). You're just going to have to take the film's word for it that he was a military genius, respected even by his enemies – though many historians would agree. The staging of El Alamein and, later, D-day is astonishingly lifelike, not least because it is actually real life.
