Las mujeres de mi general

This film is a bit of a departure for Pedro Infante. Usually he plays nice guys in his films and they are light and enjoyable musical romantic comedies. Well, this one is different. Infante is gruffer and stupider...and the film a good bit darker than I'd expected.

When the film begins, Juan Zepeda (Infante) has been named a general in the revolutionary army circa 1910. While a good and successful commander, he's also an idiot when it comes to women. Lupe is his loving Indian wife. She's a simple but faithful woman. However, their relationship is thrown into a spin when the General's troops take a city and the Juan's old girlfriend, Carlotta, is there. This sophisticated lady is the opposite of Lupe...and she also has a heart full of black bile and ichor. But dumb old Juan is smitten with Carlotta and her winning ways. While he doesn't technically cheat on his wife, he does give the woman plenty to worry about...resulting in Lupe leaving Juan. What's next? Well, a lot of soap opera-like plot devices as well as a super-violent and strange ending. The end generally left me flat, but the confrontation scene between Carlotta and Lupe is a classic!

Overall, a strange but enjoyable film. But it's ending leaves the viewer a bit flat and the story is marred a bit by having Infante play such an incredible idiot!
