Prima colpa

Modifica
  • Helen: [referring to a newly paroled Marie Allen] What shall I do with her file?
  • Ruth Benton: Keep it active. She'll be back.
  • Marie Allen: I feel a little sick.
  • Infirmary Nurse: Get that way often?
  • Marie Allen: Yes, the last week or so.
  • Infirmary Nurse: Say, you expecting company?
  • Marie Allen: [mumbles] I don't know.
  • Infirmary Nurse: [cynically] Another pregnant one! Get up!... You know who the father is?
  • Marie Allen: My husband.
  • Marie Allen: [sarcastically] Well, ain't we gettin' respectable! Could he help with the expenses?
  • Marie Allen: He's dead!
  • Infirmary Nurse: [with contempt] Another bill for the state! Get dressed!
  • Prison wagon driver: [Opening lines] Pile out, you tramps! It's the end of the line!
  • Marie Allen: For that forty bucks I heisted I sure got myself an education.
  • Kitty Stark: Don't let it throw you, honey. You're still a kid. If you get paroled soon enough, there'll be a lotta guys that'll tumble for ya. You can even get hitched and have another kid if you're dope enough to want to. The trick's to flop out as soon as you can. Like I said, the boys can get your parole movin' fast. How 'bout it? Don't it make sense, honey? Think it over, sweetioe, but get this through your head: if you stay in here too long, you don't think of guys at all - you just get out of the habit.
  • Evelyn Harper: Come on you tramps - line up for Christmas.
  • Evelyn Harper: Line up, you tramps. This ain't no upstairs delicatessen.
  • Evelyn Harper: Home sweet home! Just like the big cage in the zoo - only you clean it up instead of the keeper. Bucket and brush is in the corner closet.
  • Marie Allen: Mrs. Benton said I was going to work in the laundry.
  • Evelyn Harper: I'm the boss here! Start scrubbin'!
  • Marie Allen: But Mrs. Benton told me...
  • Marie Allen: [she sees another inmate signaling her not to talk back] Where do I begin, Mrs. Harper?
  • Evelyn Harper: Now you're gettin' hip.
  • Millie: What I'd give for a sink full of dirty dishes.
  • Helen: What shall I do with her file?
  • [last lines]
  • Ruth Benton: Keep it active. She'll be back.
  • Emma Barber: That trained seal can sure ask a lot of questions. Who is this Pearl Harbor anyway? What is she, an inmate?
  • Kitty Stark: You see kid, in this cage, you get tough or you get killed. Better wise up before it's too late.
  • Emma Barber: Who's this Pearl Harbor anyway? Is she an inmate?
  • Miss Barker: Sign here. I'll skip the mental test, you look normal enough.
  • Claire Devlin - Inmate: How much time you pullin'?
  • Marie Allen: One to fifteen years. But I come up for parole in ten months.
  • Smoochie: Just a hot minute. What's your rap?
  • Marie Allen: Robbery.
  • Smoochie: Hmph. Society. Larcenists don't talk to CPs.
  • Marie Allen: [not familiar with the term, looks perplexed] "CPs"?
  • Smoochie: Are you kiddin'?
  • Kitty Stark: "CP" - common prostitute.
  • Smoochie: Where you been livin', the moon?
  • Kitty Stark: Her name's Smoochie.
  • Marie Allen: Glad to meet you.
  • [politely holds out her hand to shake]
  • Smoochie: [somewhat reluctantly shakes hands, then turns to Kitty Stark] Got news for ya': she's all right.
  • Ruth Benton: Fire me, commissioner - I insist on it. I want that public hearing!
  • Marie Allen: For that forty bucks I heisted, I certainly got myself an education!
  • Mugging Matron: Hi Emma!
  • Emma Barber: Hi!
  • Mugging Matron: Shut up.
  • Marie Allen: Kill her. Kill her. Kill her.
  • Elvira Powell: I didn't know what kind of a heel Harper is. She's like a cop I was sweet on once. He had to work guys over for no reason at all, just because it made him feel important. If I'd known I wouldn't have started on you.
  • Kitty Stark: [to Elvira] Quit shaking the tambourine.
  • Inmate: I'll tell Evelyn.
  • Kitty Stark: Don't kid me, Harper's first name is filth.
  • Woman Visitor: What's she in here for? (something is whispered to her) And they call us the weaker sex.
  • Marie Allen: Kindly omit the flowers.
  • Ruth Benton: [consoling a sobbing Marie Allen, who has just arrived in prison as an inmate] You'll find all kinds of women in here, just as you would outside. But every large institution must have rules, and the matrons are here to see that the rules are obeyed.
  • Ruth Benton: [continues] You weren't sent here to be punished - just *being* here is the punishment, that's all.
  • Millie: I'm a tall weed in the grass and the grapevines bloomin'.
  • Infirmary Nurse: [to one of the infirmary assistants, as Marie is being given her prison medical exam] I hope your batch is cleaner than the last lot. I had to scrub them with brooms.
  • Infirmary Nurse: [examines her eyes and ears] Eyes okay... No drugs in the ears... Open your mouth wide... I said *wide*!
  • Infirmary Nurse: [examines inside her mouth] No drugs in mouth. Teeth sound.
  • Infirmary Nurse: [thumps her chest] Lung tap sound... Heart excited, but strong enough.
  • Infirmary Nurse: [Marie starts to look very uncomfortable] What's the matter?
  • Marie Allen: [weakly] I feel a little sick...
  • Sen. Ted Donnolly: [speaking to Ruth Benton in her office] I have a great respect for you - you're a fighter. I used to be a Golden Gloves boy myself in the old days. They taught me that when the odds were against a good fighter to cover up, if you wanted to keep on your feet. Because even though you lose the decision, it's better than a knockout.
  • Sen. Ted Donnolly: Good morning, Mrs. Benton.
  • [shakes her hand and walks out]
  • Kitty Stark: [Evelyn Harper casually saunters in to the lock-up area; she walks up behind Kitty Stark, giving an evil chuckle] What's so funny?
  • Evelyn Harper: We've got a new fish coming in. Maybe if you're real nice you might get her for a roommate. An old friend of yours: Elvira Powell.
  • Evelyn Harper: [Kitty Stark looks shocked, and slowly sits down] It's going to be a rich haul - none of your penny-ante stuff.
  • Kitty Stark: You'll still do what I pay you to do.
  • Evelyn Harper: Them days are over!
  • Evelyn Harper: [calls out to the other inmates nearby] Hey, girls, take a look at your "queen bee." She's buzzin' off the throne. She never was nothin' but a dime-a-dozen booster with so little influence she couldn't even get off on self-defense for a murder rap!
  • Evelyn Harper: [continues] I got nothin' against you, it's just a matter of dollars and cents. Elvira Powell's an institution with a big bank roll stashed away, and I always wanted to meet an institution.
  • [Harper lets out a devilish laugh and walks away]
  • Kitty Stark: Someday I'm gonna' get my hands in her hair... and I'm gonna' pull it out by the roots.
  • Prison wagon driver: Pile out, you tramps. It's the end of the line.
  • Smoochie: I got news for you, she's alright.
  • Smoochie: She's a real lady, Georgia, only she married some guy who likes spendin' other people's dough, so he got her to write a bunch of bouncers. I got news for ya. Georgia gives this place class.
  • Kitty Stark: She ain't the only one. I had two real mink coats and a closetful of black lace nighties and a shelf full of real French perfumes that my girls lifted right out of one of the swankiest stores in town.
  • Smoochie: Don't rub it in. All I had was a different pair of shoes for every night.
  • Evelyn Harper: Let's you and me get acquainted honey. You may be a number to others but not to me. Sit down in this chair, it's kinda roomy.
  • Isolation Matron: You'll have to stay here until your blood test comes back. So, for two weeks, there will be no mail, no visitors, no nothing.
