- Jane Palmer: Did you notice where the liquor was when you went through my kitchen?
- Danny Fuller: Sure!
- Jane Palmer: Go make us a drink.
- Danny Fuller: Stallin' honey?
- Jane Palmer: What do I call you besides 'Stupid?'
- Danny Fuller: [Chuckles] Stupid'll do if you don't bruise easily. Otherwise you might try Danny.
- Danny Fuller: Where's my dough?
- Jane Palmer: Then you're not a policeman?
- Danny Fuller: Only on my mother's side, honey. Where's my dough?
- Alan Palmer: What is it, Jane? I just don't understand you! I've tried to give you everything you wanted, everything I could.
- Jane Palmer: Yes, you've given me a dozen down payments and installments for the rest of our lives.
- Alan Palmer: This money's like poison, it's changing you, it's changing me.
- Jane Palmer: I wish it were that easy, I've always been this way.
- Danny Fuller: You know, tiger, I didn't know they made 'em as beautiful as you are, and as smart. Or as hard.
- Danny Fuller: If I help you it's the gas chamber.
- Jane Palmer: Neither one of us will get the gas chamber. People saw me come onto this boat with my husband and they'll see me get off with him, you're going to put on his hat and coat.
- Danny Fuller: I'm going to buy an evening paper, and there'd better be something in it about money, or I'll be around again. An' I'm afraid I'll be awfully peeved at ya, honey!
- Danny Fuller: For your sake, beautiful, I hope you're not tryina soft-soap me. I wouldn't take too kindly to it.
- [pushes her]
- Jane Palmer: What's all that about?
- Danny Fuller: That's just to remind ya, honey, you're in a tough racket now.
- Alan Palmer: Stop it, Jane! If we don't report this, it's a felony. It's the same as stealing. It's a blind alley with a big barred gate at the end!
- Jane Palmer: It's cold in here.
- Danny Fuller: I'll turn on the oven.
- [Steps over to the kitchenette, noise of oven lighting]
- Danny Fuller: Maybe I shouldn't bother to light it, huh Tiger?
- Alan Palmer: Jane, Jane, what's happening to us? The money sits down there in an old leather bag, and yet it's tearing us apart. It's poison, Jane. It's changing you. It's changing both of us.
- Jane Palmer: I wish it were that simple, Allan, but I haven't changed. It's the way I am. You've got to let me keep that money.
- Alan Palmer: Don't, don't, Jane.
- Jane Palmer: No, Allan, I won't let you just give it away. Chances like this are never offered twice. This is it. I've been waiting for it, dreaming of it all my life - even when I was a kid. And it wasn't because we were poor, not hungry poor at least. I suppose, in a way, it was far worse. We were white collar poor, middle-class poor. The kind of people who can't quite keep up with the Joneses and die a little every day because they can't.
- Jane Palmer: Hasn't it hit you yet, Alan? The money was literally thrown in our laps. No one in the world knows we have it!
- Alan Palmer: Get ahold of yourself, Jane, will ya'? It's a bag of dynamite. That was a payoff - probably blackmail.
- Alan Palmer: How much have you spent?
- Jane Palmer: $790, less than one tenth of one percent of all our money.
- Boat Attendant: Hey, you a cop?
- Don Blake: Do I look like one?
- Boat Attendant: Never seen any that did.
- Danny Fuller: You haven't anything to hide, have you?
- [Jane sits down and crosses her legs]
- Danny Fuller: No, I can see you haven't.
- Danny Fuller: I came to tell you somethin', Tiger. If you get that dough and dust with it, it'll be very, very bad!
- Danny Fuller: You going to take me back to shore or do I swim?
- Jane Palmer: You move and I'll shoot you and say you killed my husband.
- Danny Fuller: [to Jane, regarding the poison] You know what the man said who sold me this? He said I didn't look the type of guy he was used to dealing with. I looked him right in the eye and I said 'You mean I don't look like a killer, huh?' And you know what he said? He said, 'No, you don't.'
- [laughs]
- Danny Fuller: I wonder what he woulda said... if you'd bought the stuff, Tiger.
