- [Two people can be seen in an apartment. One of them is a man named Jack Hartrampf. The other is a woman named Vickie Webb. As some music plays, Vickie looks outside the door for a few seconds. After that, she closes the door starts to approach Jack]
- Vickie Webb: All clear.
- Jack Hartrampf: Are you sure?
- Vickie Webb: I'm sure, I didn't see nobody.
- Jack Hartrampf: I'd better go now, Vickie.
- Vickie Webb: Will you call me?
- Jack Hartrampf: First chance I can.
- [the two of them share a quick embrace before Jack heads to the door. He opens it, and after looking around for a few seconds, closes the door and begins to descend the stairs]
- [Capt. Barnaby can be seen in his office. Also present is a woman named Ginny, Barnaby's secretary. The Captain has some papers in his hand.]
- Ginny: Morning reports all here?
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: All except Imlay's. He's still working on his.
- Ginny: What's holding him up?
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: He's been talking to the witness they picked up at the shooting.
- Ginny: Well, I want to see his report as soon as it's ready.
- [the Captain moves towards his desk]
- Ginny: What's the latest from the hospital?
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: Kellogg's still under oxygen. He hasn't regain consciousness.
- Ginny: Not good.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: Miss Easton's outside.
- Ginny: [sits down] Hmmm?
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: The girl Judge Chaucer called about.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: Oh yeah... oh uh... what's the name of that con outside with Lacey?
- Ginny: Frankie Pierce.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: [nods] Mmm-hmmm.
- Ginny: He told Lacey he's got something good for you.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: [looks at his papers] Well, we'll see.
- Ginny: Uh, they turned down our request for a new typewriter.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: [laughs] Naturally.
- [In Captain Barnaby's office, the Captain can be seen offering some cigarettes to Mona Ross, who is sitting in a chair]
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: Sorry I had to bring you downtown, Mona.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: [Takes a cigarette] It's always good to see you, Barney. I had to come down anyway. They're holding two of my girls.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: They are?
- Mona Ross: [smiles] As if you didn't know.
- [At Police Headquarters, Captain Barnaby can be seen walking down a hallway. As this is going on, Dwight Foreman arounds a corner and catches up to him]
- Dwight Foreman: Barnie, wait a minute. Barnie, listen. I'm a reasonable man. Let's see if we can't work something out.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: All right. What did Hartrampf see last night?
- Dwight Foreman: But that's not reasonable. How can you make a man see something that he didn't? Come on, Barnie, let's talk it over.
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: [nods] Sure...
- Dwight Foreman: [smiles] Thanks, Barnie.
- [Barnie opens a nearby door, and Dwight enters. However, Barnie doesn't follow. Instead, he just closes the door and walks off. A sign on the door reveals that it the door to a restroom]
- Capt. 'Barnie' Barnaby: What's the charge, Lacey?
- Det. Lacey: Breaking and entering, burglary. Frankie's on parole.
- Frankie Pierce: A mountain out of a molehill. I was drunk, got in the wrong room by mistake.
- Frankie Pierce: Frankie Pierce - you sent me up, remember? Judge Rose presiding - he gave me one-to-five.
- Al Barkis: That's your answer, Marty?
- Marty Kusalich: I'm still thinking.
- Al Barkis: You had plenty of time to think.
- Marty Kusalich: I don't feel so good - I think I'll skip it.
- Al Barkis: What kind of twist is that?
- Marty Kusalich: I just don't feel right - you know, the cop-killing and the heat...
