When director Richard Gray set out to make his first Western, he didn’t just scout a location — he built one. Nestled north of Yellowstone National Park in Montana’s rugged Paradise Valley, Yellowstone Film Ranch is a Western backlot styled after a late-1800s gold rush town, set against the striking backdrop of Emigrant Peak. Like the Old West backlots of the studio era, such as Arizona’s Old Tucson and Colorado’s former Buckskin Joe, Yellowstone Film Ranch was built to bring authenticity to stories of the American West.

Gray emerged as a runner-up in Project Greenlight Australia — the Aussie instalment of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s popular documentary series — and built a steady career helming thrillers like Mine Games and Sugar Mountain. An episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, featuring the windswept charm of Livingston, Montana, eventually pointed him toward a new frontier.

Unlike some fandoms out there, the "Avatar" audience lives in shared adoration of the show — as harmonious as the four nations of water, earth, fire, and air once were. There are 61 "Avatar" episodes split across three seasons (or "Books"). Of those, season 2 "Zuko Alone" is often singled out as one of the best, if not the best, of the whole show. The Predator is a classic movie monster who has always been the villain. Since attempting to hunt Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his friends through a Central American jungle in the 1987 John McTiernan-directed movie, the Predator has gone on to stalk his prey for decades. Dan Trachtenberg breathed new life into the franchise in 2022 with his breakout sequel, Prey, starring Amber Midthunder. Now, he’s attempting to do what no other Predator movie has done before– transforming the Predator into the protagonist. His new Predator movie, Predator: Badlands, puts the focus on Dek (Dimitrius Koloamatangi), a hunter trying to prove himself on a strange planet. A Complete Unknown star Elle Fanning also stars in the movie.

A new month has brought another wave of streaming acquisitions for Max subscribers to enjoy. The streaming platform just added a wide array of films to its library in April, including one of 2024’s late financial and critical hits and an early 2025 thriller that still ranks as one of the best movies of the year so far. April, in other words, gives you the chance to catch up on a pair of recent films that you may have missed. There are, of course, more than a few easily recommendable movies released before last year that have also made their way to Max this month.

1989's "Batman" was a pivotal moment for superhero movies. Richard Donner's "Superman" established the blueprint for the modern blockbuster back in 1978, but without Tim Burton's late-'80s take on the Dark Knight, the trajectory of the superhero tentpole itself would look a lot different. It's a good thing the film was so influential, too, considering what Burton went through to make it.

Casting controversies, grueling shooting schedules, and the fact that Batman as a character had yet to prove himself as a box office draw all made for what was surely an extremely stressful time for the director. Recall that, at that point in his career, Burton had only helmed two major studio movies: "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice." While both films are fondly remembered today, they were hardly the $35 million blockbuster that "Batman" represented, and for Burton the whole experience was somewhat of a baptism of fire.

Since the days of classics like Shane and Stagecoach, the Western genre has offered a blend of action and adventure, with 1993's Tombstone standing out as a modern icon. Directed by George P. Cosmtos and starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, the film's dedication to action and quotable script earned it the enduring respect of fans of the Old West. Although most Westerns fall short of it, there are some that almost live up to what it has to offer.

While movies like Django Unchained and Unforgiven are as good as, if not better, than Tombstone, others fall short of matching the scale, characters and story of Cosmatos' revenge movie. From slow-burning horror films to team-up adventures, these films all have something that makes them a good chaser for the 1993 epic. Under directors and stars like Clint Eastwood, Lawrence Kasdan and Kurt Russell, the genre has produced an array of excellent stories.

Back in 1998, a little action flick came out, received middling reviews, and made only $14.5 million of its $60 million budget. A story set in the future, one that embraced the “One Man Army” trope, starring a surprisingly strong cast led by Kurt Russell and directed by the man who gave us Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon. Making things even stranger, it exists in a canonically connected universe to Blade Runner. Movies are 99% about place and time, and this flick was sadly released in the wrong era. When most actors win an Academy Award, it's because they've crafted a fully-realized, nuanced portrayal of a character. They've created a person out of whole cloth, bringing them to life on screen in a way that no one else could've done in quite the same way. Understandably, a lot of Oscar-winning performances take the whole movie to do that. However, things get trickier when we move into the Best Supporting categories. Actors at this level are often working with a limited amount of scenes, trying to get a portrayal across in very small chunks that may not add up to anything close to the amount of time that audiences see their co-stars.

When Logan came out in 2017, it would have been reasonable to assume that it was going to be the last time we’d ever see Hugh Jackman in action as the most iconic member of the X-Men. People may forget now just how controversial it was when it came out.

A covers compilation benefitting the relief fund of singer-songwriter Jesse Malin, who suffered a spinal stroke last year, is set for release on September 20th. The latest single to be released from the effort is Billie Joe Armstrong’s cover of Malin’s “Black Haired Girl.”

Betty Anne Rees, who portrayed tough women who weren’t very nice in The Unholy Rollers and Sugar Hill, two 1970s offerings from the B-movie factory American International Pictures, has died. She was 81.

Rees died Monday at her home in Hemet, California, after a series of falls and a possible stroke, her niece, Kathleen Loucks, told The Hollywood Reporter. She also was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the early 1990s.

The Ohio native played Janet Ingram, the secretary for Fred MacMurray’s Steve Douglas, on the last of My Three Sons’ 12 seasons in 1971-72. (Abby Dalton was Janet on an episode three years earlier.)

In The Unholy Rollers (1972), directed by Vernon Zimmerman, Rees portrayed Mickey Martinez, a star of the Los Angeles Avengers roller derby team who does not get along with popular new player Karen Walker (1970 Playboy Playmate of the Year Claudia Jennings).

Players can rename farm animals in Stardew Valley by clicking on their name after petting them. This feature has been available since the game's release in 2016, but many players are just discovering it now. The rename trick doesn't work for in-game children, but can lead to pranks among co-op farmers.

There is arguably no one who takes naming their farm animals more seriously than Stardew Valley players. Plenty of players admit to selling some of their well-loved animals just to rename them after accidentally confirming a randomized name (or just after deciding to change the farms aesthetic). But theres actually a way for players to change their animals names already built into the game no tearful goodbyes required.

Reddit user GneissGoing shared a snapshot from their game, in which they just learned that animals are not beholden for the rest of their virtual lives to the name given to them upon adoption.

Netflix released over a dozen stand-up specials in the second half of last year and Matt Rife was the most-watched.

Matt Rife: Natural Selection, which was released in November, was watched for 13.5M hours. This was above specials from the likes of Shane Gillis, Tom Segura and Mike Birbiglia as well as Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah and Dave Chappelle (although the latter three launched theirs very late in December).

On the back of that special, Rife has been signed up for two further specials and is now developing a sitcom at the streamer.

Netflix has dominated the stand-up scene for some time now and recently launched the second iteration of its Netflix Is A Joke festival, where it had many of the biggest names in comedy across LA for two weeks.

The streamer is starting to find itself with some competition after Hulu announced it was going to compete with the rival streamer for specials.

The new Netflix streaming comedy Tires is in the vein of single-camera sitcoms from Greg Daniels or Michael Schur. Yet, Tires is far from being on par with The Office or Parks and Recreation. In fact, this will probably be the first and last time the new Shane Gillis comedy is mentioned in the same breath as those classic sitcoms.

That’s because Tires is a poor imitation of those workplace comedies. At its worst, the new sitcom can be tedious, grating, and painfully unfunny. At its best, the series is something you have on in the background—a harmless, politically incorrect excursion. Yes, the jokes are on the hapless and clueless characters. However, that doesn’t make it good or mean its heart is in the right place.

With the release of the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action-romcom The Fall Guy, Hollywood's most lucrative season has officially arrived.

But the calendar is light on sure bets this year, and that's mostly because of recent box office trends that have left studio execs in a very uncertain position.

As you probably recall, Barbie and Oppenheimer were the summer box office success stories of 2023.

In retrospect, it seems like a foregone conclusion that two films that so dominated the zeitgeist would also win big commercially.

After all, prior to last year, you had to go all the way back to 2010 for a year in which the highest-grossing movie was neither a sequel nor a superhero flick.

Obviously it wasn’t by design, but the early-1950s renewal of the western genre, aided in large part by the success of Winchester ’73, which heralded a career second act for both its director, Anthony Mann, and its star, James Stewart, was answered in other quarters of the industry by multiple endeavors to take the once disreputable genre, previously dismissed as Roy Rogers/Saturday-matinee bunkum, all the way into the hallowed halls of state-sanctioned, capital-a art. These auteurist critics and film buffs, whose philosophy acquired definite contours some 10-odd years later, observed a different watershed moment: Rio Bravo.

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy presented the Batman lore in a grounded and exciting fashion with Christian Bale playing the titular role.
