Sergio Leone, the legendary director behind classics like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, was a huge fan of films that explored the themes of the wild west.
Not surprisingly, all five of his favourite films are either westerns or films that share the same spirit. One of his top picks is Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 samurai classic Yojimbo. The story follows a clever samurai who arrives in a town divided by two rival criminal gangs. Instead of picking a side, he plays both gangs against each other to help the townspeople.

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias had the top-performing comedy special on Netflix in the first half of 2025, per new data released by the streamer.
The news comes in sifting through the latest edition of Netflix’s biannual “What We Watched” report, unveiled on Thursday, which looked at streaming engagement on the platform from January through June.
Iglesias’ Gabriel Iglesias: Legend of Fluffy ranked 210th on the overall list of highest-viewed TV program during that window, with 7.8 million views since its January 6th debut.
Second on the list is 2024’s top-grossing touring comedian Nate Bargatze, who was ranked 275th with 6.7 million views for Your Friend, Nate Bargatze. His ranking was naturally affected by the fact that the special dropped on December 24, 2024, so the first days of viewership were folded into the report for the back half of 2024.

Why Did Eric Kripke Want To Leave The Boys Before Season 1 Even Hit Screens?(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Eric Kripke almost walked away from The Boys before it ever aired. And yes, the moment that nearly broke him was exactly what you’d expect from a show like this — The Deep and a dolphin.
In a recent episode of Sony’s Creator to Creator podcast, Kripke revealed that Season 1 wasn’t just the toughest to make. It nearly ended him. He was learning how to make the show, his writers were learning how to shape it, and Amazon was learning exactly what they had greenlit. And then came the scene where Chace Crawford’s character, The Deep, shares a little too much chemistry with a dolphin.

One Marvel Cinematic Universe star said it out loud: he’s ready to work with Taylor Sheridan. The actor reportedly confessed he’d “do anything” to join Sheridan’s storytelling world. And frankly speaking, there’s no better fit for Tulsa King Season 3.
With the show’s mix of streetwise muscle and emotional depth, this MCU alum brings just the perfect blend of charisma, edge, and firepower to shake things up alongside Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi. If Ts is listening, he might’ve just found the missing piece to take Tulsa King to the next level.

When director Richard Gray set out to make his first Western, he didn’t just scout a location — he built one. Nestled north of Yellowstone National Park in Montana’s rugged Paradise Valley, Yellowstone Film Ranch is a Western backlot styled after a late-1800s gold rush town, set against the striking backdrop of Emigrant Peak. Like the Old West backlots of the studio era, such as Arizona’s Old Tucson and Colorado’s former Buckskin Joe, Yellowstone Film Ranch was built to bring authenticity to stories of the American West.
Gray emerged as a runner-up in Project Greenlight Australia — the Aussie instalment of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s popular documentary series — and built a steady career helming thrillers like Mine Games and Sugar Mountain. An episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, featuring the windswept charm of Livingston, Montana, eventually pointed him toward a new frontier.

There's one hero with an iconic fate that Jon Bernthal would love to portray, although he'd want Taylor Sheridan's help to do it. The actor most recently seen reprising his role as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher (and the best version to date), has collaborated with Sheridan on three distinct projects in the writer/director's impressive career. He appeared in what's widely considered one of Sheridan's best works with the Denis Villeneuve-directed "Sicario," before following it up with "Wind River" starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. This film marked Sheridan's first big-budget directorial endeavor, which he continued in 2021 with "Those Who Wish Me Dead," featuring Angelina Jolie, in which Bernthal also starred.
Speaking to Boss Hunting about their shared history, Bernthal praised Sheridan and the success that has resulted from their collaborations up to that point: "I'll be honest with you, I'll do anything with Taylor. I love Taylor.

The 1980s was a lean spell for western fans. After the critical and commercial disaster of Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate," Hollywood studios were understandably reluctant to pile lots of money into a moribund genre and notable horse operas were few and far between. With the likes of "Silverado," "Young Guns," and "Three Amigos!" to choose from, Kathryn Bigelow's "Near Dark" was pretty much the best of the bunch, but that was as much a modern vampire movie as a typical oater. The classic western movie looked seriously long in the tooth, and it wouldn't flourish again until Kevin Costner resurrected it with his Oscar-winning "Dances with Wolves."
Then of course there was Clint Eastwood. If ever there was a filmmaker and a star who could buck the trend, it was arguably the best western movie actor to dominate the screen. By the mid '80s, Clint had been...

It's hard to find a TV series more beloved than "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Unlike some fandoms out there, the "Avatar" audience lives in shared adoration of the show — as harmonious as the four nations of water, earth, fire, and air once were. There are 61 "Avatar" episodes split across three seasons (or "Books"). Of those, season 2 "Zuko Alone" is often singled out as one of the best, if not the best, of the whole show. "Avatar" sequel "The Legend of Korra" even did a spiritual follow-up: "Korra Alone." The exiled prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko (Dante Basco) is introduced in season 1 hunting Avatar Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen). In season 2, Zuko falls even lower, losing even the meager resources he previously had. He has to put his Avatar hunt on pause because the Fire Nation is hunting him too.
"Zuko Alone" is both a standalone episode and one that cannot be skipped.

The Predator is a classic movie monster who has always been the villain. Since attempting to hunt Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his friends through a Central American jungle in the 1987 John McTiernan-directed movie, the Predator has gone on to stalk his prey for decades. Dan Trachtenberg breathed new life into the franchise in 2022 with his breakout sequel, Prey, starring Amber Midthunder. Now, he’s attempting to do what no other Predator movie has done before– transforming the Predator into the protagonist. His new Predator movie, Predator: Badlands, puts the focus on Dek (Dimitrius Koloamatangi), a hunter trying to prove himself on a strange planet. A Complete Unknown star Elle Fanning also stars in the movie.
Recently, Trachtenberg spoke with a group of journalists during an edit bay visit, in which Collider was in attendance. While there, Trachtenberg previewed the teaser trailer that debuted exclusively at CinemaCon, as well as the first 20 minutes of Badlands.

A new month has brought another wave of streaming acquisitions for Max subscribers to enjoy. The streaming platform just added a wide array of films to its library in April, including one of 2024’s late financial and critical hits and an early 2025 thriller that still ranks as one of the best movies of the year so far. April, in other words, gives you the chance to catch up on a pair of recent films that you may have missed. There are, of course, more than a few easily recommendable movies released before last year that have also made their way to Max this month.
Here are TheWrap’s picks for the seven best movies streaming on Max in April.

1989's "Batman" was a pivotal moment for superhero movies. Richard Donner's "Superman" established the blueprint for the modern blockbuster back in 1978, but without Tim Burton's late-'80s take on the Dark Knight, the trajectory of the superhero tentpole itself would look a lot different. It's a good thing the film was so influential, too, considering what Burton went through to make it.
Casting controversies, grueling shooting schedules, and the fact that Batman as a character had yet to prove himself as a box office draw all made for what was surely an extremely stressful time for the director. Recall that, at that point in his career, Burton had only helmed two major studio movies: "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice." While both films are fondly remembered today, they were hardly the $35 million blockbuster that "Batman" represented, and for Burton the whole experience was somewhat of a baptism of fire.

Since the days of classics like Shane and Stagecoach, the Western genre has offered a blend of action and adventure, with 1993's Tombstone standing out as a modern icon. Directed by George P. Cosmtos and starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, the film's dedication to action and quotable script earned it the enduring respect of fans of the Old West. Although most Westerns fall short of it, there are some that almost live up to what it has to offer.
While movies like Django Unchained and Unforgiven are as good as, if not better, than Tombstone, others fall short of matching the scale, characters and story of Cosmatos' revenge movie. From slow-burning horror films to team-up adventures, these films all have something that makes them a good chaser for the 1993 epic. Under directors and stars like Clint Eastwood, Lawrence Kasdan and Kurt Russell, the genre has produced an array of excellent stories.

Back in 1998, a little action flick came out, received middling reviews, and made only $14.5 million of its $60 million budget. A story set in the future, one that embraced the “One Man Army” trope, starring a surprisingly strong cast led by Kurt Russell and directed by the man who gave us Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon. Making things even stranger, it exists in a canonically connected universe to Blade Runner. Movies are 99% about place and time, and this flick was sadly released in the wrong era. So today, I want to explore one of the best and most underrated action films of the late ‘90s. Today, we talk Soldier.
There is something so intrinsically human about the “One Man Army” trope and how we love to see the wrong things put right. It’s been around forever—think George Stevens’s Shane, for example—but popularized (at least in the blockbuster...

Every Shane Gillis fan knows that the stand-up star is a history buff, but does he know the historical record of his own jokes?
This past Saturday, Saturday Night Live host and almost-alumnus Gillis devoted nearly half of his opening monologue to roasting the late writer and historian Shelby Foote for taking creative liberties with his historical accounts in Ken Burns’ acclaimed 1990 mini-series The Civil War. Gillis joked that Burns’ nine-part documentary is “kryptonite to women,” saying of The Civil War, “If you put that on, they will fall asleep. … That’s a little Cosby tip for you, actually.” The comic then laid into frequent Civil War interviewee Foote for playing fast and loose with the minutia of the war and its combatants, describing how Foote dramatized the events and details of the Civil War with an almost sexual aplomb.

When most actors win an Academy Award, it's because they've crafted a fully-realized, nuanced portrayal of a character. They've created a person out of whole cloth, bringing them to life on screen in a way that no one else could've done in quite the same way. Understandably, a lot of Oscar-winning performances take the whole movie to do that. However, things get trickier when we move into the Best Supporting categories. Actors at this level are often working with a limited amount of scenes, trying to get a portrayal across in very small chunks that may not add up to anything close to the amount of time that audiences see their co-stars.
In "Conclave," for example, Isabella Rossellini plays Sister Agnes. She's one of the most senior nuns in Vatican City, and as such, she's given a position of power that winds up influencing the course of the Church's history.

Almost every vampire and Dracula story in the anime and manga community has taken some sort of inspiration from Hideyuki Kikuchi’s Vampire Hunter D. It is a series of novels that started in 1983 and went on to become one of the greatest vampire stories in history. It has 55 different novels that have been published over the years and also has been adapted into anime, movies, video games, etc.

Vampire Hunter D follows the story of D, a half-human, half-vampire who roams through a post-apocalyptic world that is threatened by the Nobles, a brutal race of vampires. The story involves fiction, drama, dark fantasy, and a lot of suspense. And it is one of the greatest works by Kikuchi and his illustrator, Yoshitaka Amano.

Why do we watch Hallmark holiday movies, year in and year out? In 2024 alone, the channel pumped out 32 original films for the holiday season, with new premieres starting in October and continuing every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the rest of the year. Many of them have interchangeable titles, like "Believe in Christmas," "The Christmas Quest," and "Confessions of a Christmas Letter." It's totally natural to turn on one of these movies and think, "Haven't I seen this before?"
After all, so many of these movies are the same, down to the identical green and red sweaters everyone seems to wear on every poster. They all have the same few types of characters with the same few types of jobs, getting into the same sort of holiday shenanigans while falling into the same types of romances.
But, like a treasured Christmas cookie recipe that we return to every year, having...

In the history of the Academy Awards, only 17 Westerns have ever been nominated for Best Picture. A brief list of the nominees: "In Old Arizona" (1928), "Cimarron" (1931), "Viva Villa!" (1934), "Stagecoach" (1939), "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943), "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948), "High Noon" (1952), "Shane" (1953), "How the West Was Won" (1963), "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969), "Dances with Wolves" (1990), "Unforgiven" (1992), "No Country for Old Men" (2007), "True Grit" (2010), "Django Unchained" (2012), "Hell or High Water" (2016), and "The Power of the Dog" (2021).
Others may be on the border of the genre, like, say, "Brokeback Mountain" or "The Revenant," but the above 17 are indisputable.
The first of those 17 films to win Best Picture was Wesley Ruggles' American history epic "Cimarron," one of the highest-reviewed films of its day. Variety's 1931 review of the film praised it as one of the modern age's great spectacles, a pinnacle of pop filmmaking.

On the Scene at the Controversial ‘Rust’ World Premiere at Camerimage: ‘That Is a Terrible Question’
“What can we do to make this better?” Halyna Hutchins’ quote appears in the closing credits of “Rust,” the movie in which she was shot and killed.
The production was on day 12 of a 21-day schedule when the accident and Hutchins’ death occurred. It took some 18 months to resume shooting. The production shifted from New Mexico to Montana, “for 10 million different reasons,” director Joel Souza, who himself was injured in the accident, said.
The cast and crew were invited to return, but some had to be replaced. Souza hired Bianca Cline, who had originally interviewed for the job, to continue Hutchins’ work.
The completed version of the film had its world premiere November 20 at EnergaCAMERIMAGE, the Polish cinematography festival itself mired in controversy this year, with Souza and Cline in attendance. Two days before, Souza screened the movie from his laptop for critics. He and Cline later sat for an interview with IndieWire,...

The makings of Channing Tatum's final Gambit scene in Deadpool & Wolverine and why it wasn't used in the theatrical cut of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie gets explained by the film editors. Despite being Marvel Studios' only theatrical outing for 2024, it didn't stop Deadpool & Wolverine from not only becoming a massive box office hit but also a creative victory for the company. From all the Deadpool & Wolverine Easter eggs/references to the multiple cameos, the Shawn Levy-directed film also brought a long-time casting to life as Channing Tatum finally got to play Gambit in live-action.
Screen Rant recently interviewed the Deadpool & Wolverine editors Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid about their work on the massive Phase 5 installment. When Logan came out in 2017, it would have been reasonable to assume that it was going to be the last time we’d ever see Hugh Jackman in action as the most iconic member of the X-Men. Of course, it didn’t quite work out that way (which we predicted years ago), with the mutant now anchoring a billion-dollar grossing buddy flick with none other than Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool.
Yet, as wild as Deadpool & Wolverine is, they made it in a way where Logan can still serve as a powerful ending to Wolverine’s story, and indeed, it’s a movie that stands the test of time. In this episode of Marvel Revisited, written, edited and narrated by Kier Gomes, we dig into the making of one of the edgiest superhero movies of all time.
People may forget now just how controversial it was when it came out.

The intense sadness in Western movies comes from themes like loss, dying of the West, and gunslinger loneliness. Tragic heroes embody the ideal of individualism but also show that singularity leads to heartbreak. Recent Western films subvert expectations, question morality, and offer nuanced portraits of the Old West.

Pale Rider is Clint Eastwood's only foray into playing a supernatural character in a Western setting, adding a unique twist to his filmography. The movie draws inspiration from classic Westerns like Shane, while also incorporating a subtle supernatural edge to the story of a mysterious preacher. Despite being a departure from Eastwood's typical roles, Pale Rider remains one of his best-received films, blending elements of horror and Western genres.

Mariah Carey is credited with giving the music industry some of the best hits of all time like her all-time fan-favorite holiday song All I Want for Christmas is You, which has effortlessly topped quite some charts multiple times over the years since its release in 1994. And yet, her most glorious moment didn’t happen onstage while performing one of her songs.

Players can rename farm animals in Stardew Valley by clicking on their name after petting them. This feature has been available since the game's release in 2016, but many players are just discovering it now. The rename trick doesn't work for in-game children, but can lead to pranks among co-op farmers.
There is arguably no one who takes naming their farm animals more seriously than Stardew Valley players. Plenty of players admit to selling some of their well-loved animals just to rename them after accidentally confirming a randomized name (or just after deciding to change the farms aesthetic). But theres actually a way for players to change their animals names already built into the game no tearful goodbyes required.
Reddit user GneissGoing shared a snapshot from their game, in which they just learned that animals are not beholden for the rest of their virtual lives to the name given to them upon adoption.

Netflix released over a dozen stand-up specials in the second half of last year and Matt Rife was the most-watched.
Matt Rife: Natural Selection, which was released in November, was watched for 13.5M hours. This was above specials from the likes of Shane Gillis, Tom Segura and Mike Birbiglia as well as Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah and Dave Chappelle (although the latter three launched theirs very late in December).
On the back of that special, Rife has been signed up for two further specials and is now developing a sitcom at the streamer.
Netflix has dominated the stand-up scene for some time now and recently launched the second iteration of its Netflix Is A Joke festival, where it had many of the biggest names in comedy across LA for two weeks.
The streamer is starting to find itself with some competition after Hulu announced it was going to compete with the rival streamer for specials.

The new Netflix streaming comedy Tires is in the vein of single-camera sitcoms from Greg Daniels or Michael Schur. Yet, Tires is far from being on par with The Office or Parks and Recreation. In fact, this will probably be the first and last time the new Shane Gillis comedy is mentioned in the same breath as those classic sitcoms.
That’s because Tires is a poor imitation of those workplace comedies. At its worst, the new sitcom can be tedious, grating, and painfully unfunny. At its best, the series is something you have on in the background—a harmless, politically incorrect excursion. Yes, the jokes are on the hapless and clueless characters. However, that doesn’t make it good or mean its heart is in the right place.

Shane Walsh set the tone for dangerous characters in The Walking Dead with his ruthless survival tactics and near deadly feud with Rick. Maggie Rhee's evolution from innocent survivor to determined leader showcases her quietly dangerous nature and willingness to seek justice. Beta's lack of empathy and single-minded goal to protect Alpha make him one of the franchise's most terrifying villains, posing a huge physical threat.
The Walking Dead's violent universe is full of twisted and dark moments, but some characters stand out as the franchise's most dangerous. Since the show began in 2010, the series has been balancing its brutal nature with lighter moments, helping create such iconic characters. While The Walking Dead has feature its more wholesome moments, it is more memorable for its sinister scenes that show how difficult living in a zombie apocalypse can be. Naturally, there are plenty of villains who pose a terrifying threat,...

Tubi offers a wide range of films, including award-winning classics like Dances with Wolves, for free. Dances with Wolves, starring Kevin Costner, showcases a touching story of friendship with the Sioux tribe. The film, lauded for its authenticity and portrayal of indigenous people, won 7 Oscars and grossed over $420 million.
Tubi's ever-expansive catalog of free, ad-supported TV and movies has made it the go-to platform for many looking for everything from Westerns to old classics, modern hits, or B-movie zaniness and scary content. Still, the platform also hosts a bevy of award-winning cinema (they even have a category for that), and some films that end up getting added are worth mentioning for those looking to check out or revisit some of the best movies to ever grace the screen.

It might feel like we just rang in the new year last week, but believe it or not, summer is already here -- at the movies, anyway.
With the release of the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action-romcom The Fall Guy, Hollywood's most lucrative season has officially arrived.
But the calendar is light on sure bets this year, and that's mostly because of recent box office trends that have left studio execs in a very uncertain position.
As you probably recall, Barbie and Oppenheimer were the summer box office success stories of 2023.
In retrospect, it seems like a foregone conclusion that two films that so dominated the zeitgeist would also win big commercially.
After all, prior to last year, you had to go all the way back to 2010 for a year in which the highest-grossing movie was neither a sequel nor a superhero flick.

Obviously it wasn’t by design, but the early-1950s renewal of the western genre, aided in large part by the success of Winchester ’73, which heralded a career second act for both its director, Anthony Mann, and its star, James Stewart, was answered in other quarters of the industry by multiple endeavors to take the once disreputable genre, previously dismissed as Roy Rogers/Saturday-matinee bunkum, all the way into the hallowed halls of state-sanctioned, capital-a art. And, as it happened, the two westerns that made a big runner-up showing at the 1952 and 1953 Oscars, High Noon and Shane, respectively, also served, by virtue of holding what wide swaths of the future cinephile demographic would come to view as Vichy letters of transit, as high-value targets for skeptics of the official cultural narrative.

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy presented the Batman lore in a grounded and exciting fashion with Christian Bale playing the titular role. The trilogy also presented a rich array of supervillains paired against Batman with Heath Ledger’s Joker and Tom Hardy’s Bane being a talking point for fans.
Heath Ledger as Joker in The Dark Knight
Each actor brought so much complexity to their roles and while both are drastically different characters, fans often compare them and decide who was more compelling. However, Nolan believes that the two characters do not exist in the same periphery and are not suited for a justified comparison.

Don Siegel’s 1976 western The Shootist stars John Wayne in his final film appearance, though it’s perhaps just as notable for the muted nature of its regard for the pathology of violence. After all, Siegel is the same filmmaker who half a decade prior made Dirty Harry, in which Clint Eastwood’s renegade cop relishes squeezing the trigger of his 44-magnum revolver whenever the opportunity presents itself.
There’s a propulsive mania to Siegel’s direction of Dirty Harry, tapping as it does into the curious overlap between Harry’s police tactics and a psycho sniper’s bloodlust. Wayne’s J.B. Books in The Shootist has no such compelling correlate. He’s a former sheriff turned gunslinger, now an old man easing the pain of his terminal cancer with swigs of laudanum, and he’s aiming to die in peace. It’s 1901, and the fact that he can’t...
