Al Pacino Named the Two Movies He Thinks Are the Greatest Ever
Image
Al Pacino has seen and starred in countless films over his long career, but when it comes to picking his personal favorites, the legendary actor doesn’t hold back.

In an interview with the American Film Institute (AFI), he was asked about his favorite movies of all time. He paused for a moment and admitted, “My favourite movie of all time? Oh, I have about five or six – not any I’ve done – but I have five or six movies that I really think are the greatest. I’d have to think about them; they’re varied.”

Even though he was still thinking, Pacino revealed one of his top choices.

Sorry, ‘Star Wars’ — with ‘New York, New York,’ Martin Scorsese Made the Best Movie of 1977
Image
There’s a conventional wisdom when it comes to Martin Scorsese‘s 1977 musical “New York, New York” — largely exacerbated by the director himself — that it’s an experiment that didn’t quite come off, an unwieldy attempt to combine the Hollywood classicism Scorsese revered with the New Hollywood emphasis on improvisation and gritty authenticity that Marty had learned from his mentor John Cassavetes, and had applied to his previous three feature films.

The fact that the movie was a commercial disappointment when it came out didn’t help its reputation; the perception was that Scorsese had broken his winning streak the same way Steven Spielberg would break his own two years later with another old/new Hollywood mashup, “1941.” Like William Friedkin’s “Sorcerer,” another auteur passion project that opened the same week, “New York, New York” was pummeled at the box office by “Star Wars,” a movie directed by...

David Stratton, TV Host and Film Critic for Variety and The Australian, Dies at 85
Image
David Stratton, the longtime film critic for The Australian and Variety and co-host of the television series “The Movie Show” and “At The Movies,” has died. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports that Stratton’s family announced his death Thursday, saying that he died in a hospital near his home in the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney. He was 85.

Stratton was born in Trowbridge, England in 1939 before moving to Hampshire for the duration of the second World War. After the end of the war, he returned to Trowbridge, where his family ran a local grocery business for five generations. He was expected to carry on the family business, but fell in love with cinema from an early age. In 1953, he dropped out of secondary school to fully immerse himself in local film societies.

Stratton moved to Australia in 1963 and within a year joined the board of the Sydney Film Festival. By 1966, he was the festival director.

It's 2025 And I Just Watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show For The First Time – These Are My Honest Thoughts
Image
Hello, it's me again. The guy who somehow managed to develop a sense of humor despite never having seen the original "Naked Gun" movie. Now, after /Film higher-ups threatened to take me out into a field and shoot me with an anti-matter laser gun that looks surprisingly like a garden trowel, I've finally sat down to watch the fishnet-covered fever dream that is Jim Sharman's "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in time for its 50th anniversary. My first impressions? Well, it's pretty wild, isn't it? But then again, that's hardly surprising coming from the musical's co-creator and Riff Raff himself, Richard O'Brien, who to me will always be the flute-playing, leopard jacket-wearing U.K. game show host of "The Crystal Maze" (think "Legends of the Hidden Temple" for grown-ups).

Now, what I need to clarify from the start is that musicals have never been my thing, no matter how new or old they are.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 6: Jeremiah’s One Statement Proved Belly’s Fear Right
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!This article has spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty, Season 3, Episode 6.

Belly’s bridal shower was nearly a picture-perfect celebration in Episode 6 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, complete with laughter, friends, and even a surprise appearance from Laurel until one particular Jeremiah moment. Jeremiah’s reminiscence about their childhood stirred an unspoken fear that has lived in the back of Belly’s mind – a fear that maybe she doesn’t know him as well as she thinks.

Belly and her friends start playing the Honeymoon Game. This basically means how much she knows about Jeremiah. While she answers all the questions correctly, “Does Belly know the name of Jeremiah’s first pet?” makes her question everything.

Here she says Rosie the dog, and that he found her on the beach. To this, Steven says that it was Conrad who found Rosie, and not Jeremiah. Belly later called Jeremiah to confirm,...

Tom Holland: The Actor Opened Up About Lip Sync Battle
Image
In 2017, MCU starTom Holland performed a forever iconic lip sync to Rihanna's "Umbrella" in a battle against his now-fiancé Zendaya, and now, he's opening up about it. Lip Sync Battle was a reality competition show that first aired on Paramount Network (formerly Spike) on April 2, 2015. The show ran for 5 seasons from 2015 to 2019.

Lip Sync Battle's concept involved two different celebrities competing against each other every week, who would have to prepare two lip-sync performances, and then the audience would decide the winner. In addition to Holland, many other notable celebrities who have appeared on the show include Channing Tatum, Kathy Bates, Kaley Cuoco, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, and more.

While a guest on Gordon Ramsay's talk show Scrambled, Holland opened up about his 2017 performance in Lip Sync Battle in drag, and how wearing fishnets was his idea. During Ramsay's show, Holland admitted that he loved showcasing his...

Tom Holland Looks Back On Iconic 'Lip Sync Battle' Performance, Reveals Why His Dad Didn't Think He Should Do It
Image
Tom Holland is reflecting on his now iconic performance on Lip Sync Battle!

The 29-year-old actor got in drag for the show as he performed a mashup of “Singin’ In the Rain” and Rihanna‘s “Umbrella,” as part of his battle against now fiancée Zendaya.

While appearing on Gordon Ramsay‘s Scrambled cooking series recently, Tom looked back on the performance and how his dad thought it wasn’t the best idea to do the show.

Keep reading to find out more…

“What was really great about that is people didn’t know that I could dance. I kept that quiet, I don’t know why,” Tom told Gordon. “It’s so funny, Zendaya and I, we were chatting at the time about what we were gonna do, and we had agreed that we would take it easy. That was the agreement, that it was like, ‘I’m not gonna do anything crazy,...

Tom Holland Wore His Grandma’s Fishnets for ‘Lip Sync Battle,’ Says Dad Warned Him Against the Performance: ‘Son, I Don’t Think That’s a Good Idea’
Image
Tom Holland’s “Lip Sync Battle” performance was a family affair.

On a recent episode of Gordon Ramsay’s “Scrambled,” the “Spider-Man” star went behind the scenes on his 2017 rendition of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” on the Spike competition show.

Holland’s performance was a bait and switch for the audience, starting as a performance of “Singin’ in the Rain” before quickly switching to “Umbrella.” During the transition, Holland trades his suit for a dress, fishnets and a wig. He appeared on the episode with his fiancée Zendaya.

“It’s so funny, Zendaya and I, we were chatting at the time about what we were gonna do, and we had agreed that we would take it easy,” he said. “That was the agreement, that it was like, ‘I’m not gonna do anything crazy, you’re not gonna do anything crazy, we’re just gonna keep it nice and easy breezy.

The Kirk Douglas Sci-Fi Flop That Roger Ebert Absolutely Hated
Image
Film critics watch hundreds of movies every year, and invariably get a little cranky when they hit a patch of lousy movies. So it is occasionally therapeutic to take out one's frustrations on a film that is egregiously putrid — particularly if that film is from a serial befouler of movie theaters (I think I logged 12 blissfully uninterrupted hours of sleep after filing my pan of Paul W.S. Anderson's "Death Race").

Scathingly negative reviews are not often illuminating, but when written by masters of the craft, they can be immensely satisfying reads. When The New Yorker's Pauline Kael got a burr in her saddle, she could inveigh at length or fire off a one-sentence kill-shot (her full review of Herbert Ross' "Steel Magnolias" was published as follows: "Chalk scraping across a chalkboard for two hours"). Roger Ebert was also practiced in the skill of invective, as he demonstrated in his...

‘Superman’ Is Being Described as “One of the Most Distinct Superhero Films in a Long Time”
Image
David Corenswet recently spoke with GQ about his role as Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming film, which is hitting theaters worldwide this week. While the interview mostly focused on his experience working on the project, GQ also gave a small early review of the movie, calling it “one of the most distinct superhero films in a long time.”

According to GQ, the movie really stands out. They said it feels true to who Superman is, honest, hopeful, and not trying to copy other superhero movies that are dark or gritty. Gunn’s version is full of color, both in the way it looks and in the costumes.

It’s also pretty wild in a fun way, with robots, flying orbs, portals, giant monsters, and even Krypto the Superdog. There’s a part near the end where Superman gives a passionate speech about who he is. That moment really sums...

The Most Legendary Michael Madsen Scene Is Still Terrifying Decades Later
Image
When Quentin Tarantino emerged on the scene with "Reservoir Dogs" in 1992, he proudly wore his influences on his sleeve. Tarantino is as much of a student of the screen as he is a creator of movies for it, marrying the cinematic language of the violence in exploitation and martial arts films with the character-driven writing of high-art, American auteurism. All of the trademarks of Tarantino's filmography were on display in his debut feature, like eclectic soundtracks, non-linear storytelling, and buckets of blood. Even before the film was released, Hollywood legends like Don Coscarelli were baffled by the brilliance on display from a first-time filmmaker.

Tarantino had made a crime thriller, but instead of it being about a group brought together to carry out the crime in the climax, it focused on the aftermath when six individuals operating under pseudonyms — Mr. White (Harvey Keitel), Mr. Orange (Tim Roth), Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), Mr.

The 15 Best Classic Movies, Ranked
Image
What is a classic? It's hard to define, and definitely overused. How many new things claim to be a "classic," yet fall from favor once the hype train moves on? Classics take time. Once the initial praise has passed and moved onto something shiny and new, we're left with the movies that people still talk about years or even decades later. Sure, many Academy Award winners are now considered classics, but many more are not (check out the worst Best Picture Oscar Winners here). Meanwhile, some certifiable classics never won Best Picture or were even nominated.

For this list we're defining "classic movie" as a film that was made before 1990. Not to make you feel old, but that gives the movie more than three decades to make its case for being a classic. I'll also only be including one director's best movie, lest this list become exclusively Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford,...

Tom Hiddleston Breaks Down His Dance Moves in ‘The Life of Chuck’ and If He’d Ever Do a Musical
Image
After building his career on dramatic roles and as Marvel’s Loki, Tim Hiddleston is trying out a new title in his upcoming movie The Life of Chuck: dancer.

The film, which won the audience award at TIFF last year, is adapted from a Stephen King novella and follows three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz (played in part by Hiddleston) whose death coincides with the end of the world. Along the way, it also features plenty of dancing from the actor.

“I’ve never danced quite like this before and I had some steps to dance, some miles to go before I felt skilled enough and practiced enough to pull off some of the techniques and styles that Chuck pulls off,” Hiddleston told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday. “I have a great affection for movie musicals, I...

Greta Gerwig’s Favorite Movies: 32 Films the Director Wants You to See
Image
[Editor’s note: This article was first published in April 2023, and has since been updated].

She only has three solo directorial efforts under her belt, but Greta Gerwig has quickly become one of the most highly respected filmmakers working today. Her 2017 coming-of-age drama “Lady Bird” was an instant teen classic upon release, and her 2019 adaptation of “Little Women” received similar rapturous acclaim, becoming the definitive film version of the classic book.

And in July 2023, after an agonizing four year wait and acting a lead role in partner Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” Gerwig came back to theaters as a director with the biggest film of the year. “Barbie” is a colorful studio comedy based on the classic dolls from Mattel, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the titular Barbie and her heartthrob Ken. (He’s just Ken!) And it smashed box office numbers to gross over $1 billion globally.

Gerwig perhaps wasn’t the obvious director to choose for bringing the thematically thorny Barbie universe to cinemas; before “Lady Bird,...

Stanley Donen movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
The late Stanley Donen was born on April 13, 1924. The legendary filmmaker -- the last of the directors from Hollywood's golden age -- passed away on February 21, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of classic movies filled with color, song, and dance. Let's take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Donen got his start as a dancer. It was in the chorus line for George Abbott's production of "Pal Joey" that he met Gene Kelly. The two became quick friends, and Donen started working as Kelly's assistant, helping him choreograph his intensely acrobatic dance sequences.

The two turned to filmmaking with "On the Town" (1949), a lavish Technicolor musical about three sailors on a 24 hour shore leave in New York City. They teamed up again for perhaps the greatest movie musical of all time: "Singin' in the Rain" (1952). A satire of Hollywood's rocky transition from silent cinema to sound,...

10 Best Fake Movies Within Other Movies
Image
As fulfilling as it must be to create an actual feature film, there has to be a lot of fun involved in developing the fake films that sometimes appear in movies. Think about it. You don't have to deal with all the finicky details and logistics of turning this brief concept into a fully-fledged picture -- you just get to come up with an idea, execute the best bits of it, and move on.

Whether they add to the narrative or simply serve as an excellent punchline, fake movies can pack an out-sized punch, considering how we often only see a few minutes of them within a larger narrative. But it speaks to their quality that despite the small amount of time they're shown on screen, they tend to lodge themselves into the mind of the viewer, giving audiences a stand-out moment. And the very best of these make us all think,...

This Strange New Worlds Episode Understands Something Integral That Many Star Trek Fans Forget About the Series
Image
Star Trek's cultural dominance spans decades, peaking in the 1980s and 1990s when series like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager made waves on syndicated television. The franchise petered out for a while after the failings of Star Trek: Enterprise, laying dormant for a while until the advent of streaming services brought Star Trek television back into the fold.

Arguably the best new series to come from the modern wave of Trek streaming shows, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has successfully captured the spirit of what made the franchise so popular to begin with. The series understands, better than any other, that mixing genres and tones is what makes the franchise so indelible, as best exhibited in one of Strange New World's best episodes.

Strange New Worlds Brought Classic Star Trek Back

Many of the Star Trek series that have run on CBS All Access and...

The Inspiring Backstory Behind the Iconic Scene in “Singin’ in the Rain”
Image
There’s something magical about the movie Singin’ in the Rain. No matter how many times you watch it, the film feels just as fresh and joyful as the first time. It’s more than just a classic musical; it’s a beautiful and joyous story about love, ambition, and the challenges of an evolving time in Hollywood.

Set at a time when the film industry was transitioning from silent films to talkies, the movie showed creativity and charm in the chaos of that era. But everything was portrayed with a lighthearted touch.

At its core, however, there is a celebration of passion that was beautifully brought to life by its three stars, Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. Their chemistry and energy turned every scene into a cinematic treat.

While the movie brims with memorable moments,...

10 Best Movie Musicals From the 1960s, Ranked
Image
Since the early days of Hollywood, the movie musical has reigned as a favorite genre among movie fans and was initially popularized by classics such as The Wizard of Oz, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and Singin' in the Rain. By the 1950s, the movie musical had started to fizzle out, overshadowed by other rising film genres and a more modernized audience, but the classic genre wasn't left for dead and had moments where it thrived on the silver screen.

10 Movie Musicals That Are Awful
Image
Musicals are something of an acquired taste, especially the old-school or more traditional ones. Not everyone is into the whole “people breaking into song” thing, but that is something you can get on board with, there’s no shortage of remarkable musicals from cinema history. There are two versions of West Side Story, Singin’ in the Rain, Cabaret, and all the animated Disney movies, maybe even too many to count.

‘Reindeer Games’ at 25: Why John Frankheimer’s Maligned Would-Be Christmas Cult Classic Deserved Better
Image
On paper, the heist movie “Reindeer Games” should have been a slam-dunk. It had action master John Frankenheimer at the helm, a buzzy cast of rising stars and reliable character actors chewing the scenery, and a clever premise in which a crew dressed as Santa Clauses robs a casino at Christmastime.

Yet “Reindeer Games” landed with a thud 25 years ago — critics mostly hated it, and it flailed at the box office, opening at number three behind the kids’ movie “Snow Day” and the Bruce Willis vehicle “The Whole Nine Yards” before disappearing from theaters entirely just a few weeks later. Was it really that bad, or just a victim of bad timing? And was there a better film to be found in the footage Frankenheimer shot before test screenings led to months of reshoots and editing-room meddling by financiers Harvey and Bob Weinstein?

These questions can largely be answered via...

15 Best Movie Musicals of the 2020s So Far, Ranked
Image
The movie musical has been a staple of cinema and filmmaking for nearly as long as filmmaking has been a thing. It makes sense, as musicals and stage performances have been a powerful expression of art and storytelling long before the silver screen, so adapting and creating musical events for the medium of film was a necessary adaptation. There have been many iconic movie musicals over the years, from genuine classics like Singin' in the Rain to more recent hits like La La Land.

10 Heartbreaking Movies You Need to Mentally Prepare For
Image
From the beginning of motion picture history, films have been capable of evoking the strongest emotions from the audience. From terror and fright in horror films to shock and awe in action movies, cinema has always been able to tug at some of audiences' deepest feelings and emotions, expressing deep sentiments that only the big screen can capture.

But the most emotionally resonant movies are often the sad ones, the films that tug at the heartstrings of the audience by offering cursed romances, tragic failures, or historic events that showcase the darkest sides of world history. These heartbreaking films are must-watch experiences for moviegoers, so long as they have a box of tissues beside them.

La La Land Hits With a Surprisingly Melancholic Ending

‘A thing of pure beauty’: why Pink Flamingos is my feelgood movie
John Waters
The latest in our series of writers choosing their favourite comfort movies is the charmingly filthy John Waters classic

It may seem like a stretch to call a film that features scenes of rape, murder, incest, castration, cannibalism, bestiality and, most famously, shit-eating, a “feelgood” movie, but I can’t think of a film more worthy of the title than Pink Flamingos. To me, it’s like Singin’ in the Rain, but with scat, a thing of pure beauty and joy disguised as the most disgusting thing ever filmed.

The will to create a movie for the specific purpose of appalling anyone unaware of its true meaning turned Pink Flamingos into the ultimate litmus test. You either got its sick jokes or you didn’t. But those who did got something far more lasting than a laugh. We got a one-way ticket to an underground populated by parallel dissidents, an...

This 1967 French New Wave Musical Starring Gene Kelly Is An Enthralling Tale of Fate
Image
The Golden Age of Hollywood musicals ran from the 1930s to the late 1950s/early 1960s in Hollywood, with Gene Kelly being a key fixture in some of the greatest productions. Films like Singin' in the Rain and An American in Paris have permeated through our culture, still resonating with audiences today. Kelly is renowned for integrating ballet into the modern musical and for his inimitable charm on screen. He was also an accomplished director in Hollywood, with his work ranging from Westerns (The Cheyenne Social Club) to straight comedies (A Guide for the Married Man).

Making the Public Domain Even More Horrifying: Modest Proposals for Turning 1920s Classics Into Slasher Fare, From Mickey to Hemingway (Column)
Image
It’s become an annual ritual: Every Jan. 1, more classic works of art or characters enter the public domain, and exploitation filmmakers with a tiny budget and a big taste for grisliness are scouring the list, looking for suddenly free intellectual property to turn into horror fare. Hence the slasher films that have already been created or are in the works turning beloved characters into homicidal maniacs, like the infamous “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.”

But these Pd-sploitation filmmakers are really picking low-hanging fruit and not digging nearly deep enough into the lists for ideas. So we’ve identified some films, novels and even memoirs and pop songs that are brand new to the public domain, as of the beginning of 2025, just begging to be bloodied up. Yes, including Popeye, the seeming innocent who arguably always had a bit of the glint of a serial killer in his eye — but also...

As the calendar turns on New Year’s Day, thousands of copyrighted works across literature, film, and music from 1929 become open to fair use. This year’s slate also includes the French comic icon Tintin, Disney’s still-iconic The Skeleton Dance short (38 million views on YouTube!

‘Better Man’ Director Michael Gracey Explains How Robbie Williams Saved ‘The Greatest Showman’
Image
Australian writer-director Michael Gracey was already several years into developing “The Greatest Showman,” his grand and ambitious musical biopic that took the filmmaker eight years to realize, when his star Hugh Jackman started having cold feet.

“Hugh was losing a bit of confidence in the music,” Gracey recalled in a recent conversation with IndieWire. “When we were really close to going into production, other people started getting in Hugh’s ear about the music not being good enough.” At the time, Gracey was a respected and prolific director of music videos, with deep roots in VFX and animation, as well as music. But he had not yet made his feature filmmaking debut. Feeling like he was losing the power of his voice with Jackman, he thought, “What if it wasn’t just me telling him the songs are actually good? What if someone like Robbie Williams told him that?”

The former “Take That” superstar,...

This 68-Year Old John Wayne Movie Is the Greatest Western Ever Made
Image
This review discusses sensitive subjects including racism and sexual violence. Proceed with caution.

In the end, Ethan Edwards can’t go home again. The central figure of The Searchers, director John Ford’s epic Western, spends most of the movie’s runtime as a murderous, racist bastard. Though Ethan eventually does save the day and rescues his abducted “niece,” Debbie, domestic bliss will forever elude him. In the final shot of the movie, he watches as his family enters their cabin to live happily ever after. Ethan, however, cannot join them, forever damned to the Hell of the Old West.

More than 60 years after its original release, The Searchers lands on just about every list of The Greatest Movies Ever Made. Released in 1956, the movie adapts the novel of the same name by Alan Le May. Ford, the director most closely associated with the classic Western, helms the film from...

"Movies That Make Me Truly, Deeply Smile": Mike Flanagan Shares Recommendations For Movies That Are Healing (But Still Might Make You Cry)
Image
Writer/director Mike Flanagan shares several recommendations for uplifting movies. Flanagan is best known for his work in the horror genre with films such as Hush, Oculus, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. He saw success with Netflix series, including The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Fall of the House of Usher. He also adapted the Stephen King novels Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game. He has three more King adaptations in the works with The Life of Chuck, Carrie, and the genre-crossing epic The Dark Tower. In addition to those, Flanagan is busy with a new Exorcist movie.

Although Flanagan's career largely focuses on horror, the director has said his future work will end on a hopeful note, despite some previous bleak endings. Flanagan stated that when his children eventually watch his work he does not want to leave them with a sense of hopelessness and that "no matter how dark a story gets,...

There Are Only Three Perfect Musicals, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
As a genre, movie musicals have had some serious ups and downs throughout Hollywood history. Right now, they definitely seem to be on an upswing, especially now that the long-awaited "Wicked" movie blew everyone away at the box office — and it was only the first half of the musical to boot.

In recent years, movie musicals like "Wonka," "Mean Girls," "The Greatest Showman," "La La Land," and even the filmed stage version of "Hamilton" have become enormous hits, though critical reception has been decidedly mixed across these projects. So what are the best musicals ever according to the official Rotten Tomatoes ranking of movie musicals? Only three musicals earned 100% ratings on the review aggregate, which is — I have to say — a little surprising, largely because some all-time classics apparently missed the cut. For example, "The Sound of Music" and the original "West Side Story" only earned 83% and 92%, respectively, despite being two staples of the genre,...

Margot Robbie Baffled Over ‘Babylon’ Flop and ‘Still Can’t Figure Out Why People Hated It’: ‘I Wonder If in 20 Years People’ Will Be Shocked It Bombed
Image
Margot Robbie appeared on the “Talking Pictures” podcast and expressed her continued bafflement over moviegoers hating “Babylon,” her infamous 2022 box office flop co-starring Brad Pitt. Directed by “La La Land” Oscar winner Damian Chazelle, the Hollywood epic centered on silent movie stars in the 1920s as they struggle to adapt during the industry’s transition to talkies. “Babylon” was made for a budget in the $80 million range but bombed with $15 million at the domestic box office and $63 million worldwide.

“I am still saying that,” Robbie said when podcast host Ben Mankiewicz expressed confusion over people not liking “Babylon.” “I love it. I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, “Babylon...

25 Best Musicals of the 21st Century, Ranked
Image
Movies and musicals take our normal, ho-hum human experiences and turn them into ginormous explosions of emotion. On their own, these forms provide catharsis, but when you combine them? Buckle your culture-lovin' seatbelts, baby. Movie musicals have been around since the very beginning of film history, which begins with the borrowing of devices and talent from the creators of stage musicals. With the ability to finesse and craft set pieces you simply could not in a real-life time-and-space theatrical setting, movie musicals like The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg became the symbols of filmic creativity, ingenuity, prestige, and good old-fashioned popcorn fun.

Oscars: Best Supporting Actress musical performances bode well for 2025’s top contenders
Image
As of recent years, there has been a correlation with musical performances being recognized in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars, with eight nominated since 2002, and half emerging victorious. This year, we have potentially three actresses from two movie musicals competing for the five slots: Ariana Grande for Universal Pictures’ “Wicked,” and Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez for Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez.” Let’s take a look back at the many scenarios where song-and-dance performers were cited for Best Supporting Actress and what that could mean for this year’s contenders.

There have been a myriad of supporting actresses recognized for film musicals at the Oscars predominantly during the inception of the genre, which include Jean Hagen for “Singin’ In The Rain” (1952), Peggy Wood for “The Sound of Music” (1965), and Kay Medford for “Funny Girl” (1968). But the first victory came for Rita Moreno for “West Side Story” (1961), who...

Wicked Stars Ethan Slater & Marissa Bode Break Down Their Onscreen Relationship And The Glinda Love Triangle
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Broadway is back on the big screen thanks Wicked, which sees the first movie in its two-part adaptation hit theaters on November 22. Of course, its pedigree precedes the stage, as the musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, which in and of itself serves as a prequel to L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked centers on Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), a student of Oz's prestigious Shiz University whose life has been made more difficult due to her skin being an unnatural shade of greeen.

Audiences know Elphaba as the Wicked Witch of the West, but Wicked pulls back the curtain to reveal her sensitive and thoughtful nature, her complex friendship with Glinda the Good (Ariana Grande) back when she was just Galinda Upland, and her deep devotion to her sister Nessa. Nessarose...
