Martin Viking, an American diplomat in India, is falsely accused on the killing of an Indian dignitary and sets out to prove his innocence while trying to find the location of explosions planed on a Bombay train by a group of terrorists.

American diplomat Martin Viking is appointed to a post in India and, upon his arrival, finds the country torn by political strife. On Martin's first night at a hotel, he is visited by a native Sikh who turns out to be former army friend Kevin O'Hara in disguise. To Martin's shock, O'Hara reveals that he has become part of a terrorist group intent on fomenting a civil war by assassinating an Indian prince, the Nawob of Junipur, by blowing up his train. When Martin refuses to join O'Hara, the men quarrel until an assailant hiding on Martin's balcony knifes O'Hara. Before dying, a repentant O'Hara gives Martin details to locate the terrorist group and the pre-set explosives in hopes of preventing the assassination. Realizing that he will likely be accused of O'Hara's murder, Martin flees the hotel hoping to reach the Gundar Special train in time to warn the Nawob. By the next day, Martin's picture is in all the newspapers, describing him as a murderer. Eluding the police, Martin arrives at a small town where he is befriended by bar hostess Charlane, who upon hearing his story offers help him by providing a passport. Now able to travel freely, Martin uses O'Hara's information to begin a frantic search for the terrorists. At the Overland Railway, Martin takes B. Vornin, the train safety director, into his confidence, unaware that Vornin is the head of the terrorist group. Vornin has his henchman take Martin prisoner as well as a young girl, Mary Anne Palmer, who they mistakenly believe is Martin's accomplice. Imprisoned in a cave, Martin and Mary Anne soon discover a way out that leads them to a railroad tunnel. Realizing the line is part of the route of the Gundar Special from Bombay, Martin searches desperately for the explosives. As the train bears down upon the tunnel, Martin locates the charges and detonates them just as the Gundar Special stops safely outside of the tunnel. With Martin's information, the police are able to arrest the terrorists, and clear his name.
