In Leslie Charteris' novel "The Saint Steps In", Simon Templar (the Saint) suggests going to a movie to a lady who responds by asking whether they should take in a Falcon picture to watch someone do a bargain-basement imitation of him.
Leslie Charteris sued RKO contending that "The Falcon" was "The Saint", his creation, in disguise. The disposition of the suit has not been discovered. RKO made the change because Charteris had become an annoyance to the studio with his carping about changes in his original stories.
The car Helen and Gay use in the film is a 1941 Buick Roadmaster 2-door convertible. One of its biggest selling points was a 165 horsepower engine that was the most powerful of any American-made car at the time. Only 1,845 convertible models were made. MSRP was $1,800 ($31,500 in 2017). At auction, in excellent condition this car could fetch $100,000 or more.
The first of sixteen movies for the suave detective nicknamed "The Falcon" starring George Sanders (and later Tom Conway, who was George Sanders' elder brother).
This film, the first in RKO's series of films based on Michael Arlen's character "The Falcon," was the only one actually based on an Arlen story.
