- Inspector Marcel Bonet: He was a Frenchman!
- Train Conductor: [noticing that Bonet and Picard are handcuffed] Oh! Oh, which one of you gentlemen is the prisoner?
- [Bonet nods toward Picard]
- Train Conductor: Ah, of course! A bad type! What did he do?
- Jean Picard: I killed a conductor for asking too many questions.
- Jean Picard: [to Bonet] I suppose there's a time when any man, even a man like me, can find something... something bigger than himself for which he is willing to die without question, almost... almost happily.
- Jean Picard: [sitting outside a church with Bonet urging him to go inside] Look, Bonet, inside that church is a nice simple village priest. What confessions is he used to? Petty stuff. Swearing, drinking, beating your wife - things like that. Why, if he heard my list he'd faint. For me, it'd take at least a bishop.

- Mme. Maret: Don't put me off with pious phrases, Father. For Jules, I would question every saint in heaven and how would they reply?
- Middle-Aged Woman at Meeting: It doesn't help us that people call them martyrs.
- Mme. Maret: Martyrs are fools who die because they want to. My son wants to live.
- Mme. Bonet: Marcel, the commissioner is extremely annoyed with you - this is the third time he has called and you're still here.
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: I imagine the Gestapo are prodding his derrière this morning.
- Mme. Bonet: And they will prod yours if Picard gets away.
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: We want a new name... one they cannot check against your army record, that is the first thing they will do.
- Jean Picard: The army... wait a minute. There was another thief in my regiment called Jean DuPont. We looked enough alike to be brothers... except he was a little stupid.
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: Well, that would not kill the resemblance.
- [Jean gives him a look]
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: What happened to him?
- Jean Picard: I don't know, he came from a place called, ahh... Martinique. I think he went back there.
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: Say... it will take the Gestapo till the end of the war to find him. Yes, that's perfect.
- Jean Picard: It's not perfect. I remember his middle name too... Emile.
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: Why, what's wrong with that?
- Jean Picard: What's wrong with Emile? Can you see that on a tombstone? Sounds like a hairdresser.
- Jean Picard: [after Bonet has been coughing] You're sick, all right. Wouldn't it be terrible if you passed out on me... where would I send the body?
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: Ehh, go to the devil.
- Jean Picard: Ahh, if I did you'd probably follow me there, from force of habit.
- Inspector Marcel Bonet: Well, I'll see you to his door, right enough.
