The great Fred Zinnemann's last feature is a very personal story, a fairly uncomplicated drama with a mountain climbing backdrop. A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.

Spencer Tracy plays an embittered escapee from a  concentration camp whose faith in humanity is restored when others help him reach the Dutch border. Fred Zinnemann began his career during the studio era, but kept on going, however sporadically, long after most of his contemporaries had retired. Even so, today his name means little to most moviegoers and critics alike. But why? Quite possibly because, like William Wyler, Zinnemann covered just about every film genre there is. Memorial Day 2011 is here and while we should all take time to thank a veteran and active servicemen and women, it also means for us TVphiles - lots of good programming. So either settle in with some popcorn or make sure your DVR is ready to go.

There are movie marathons. Syfy is busting out its greatest hits in the giant monster oeuvre on Friday, followed by "Star Trek" movies all weekend. TCM and AMC are showing nothing but military movies, including classics like "All Quiet on the Western Front," "From Here to Eternity" and "Patton."

If marathons are your thing, you've got everything from "Firefly" and "Doctor Who" to "House Hunters" and "How It's Made." And if you're a sports fan, while the NBA playoffs are on hiatus, you can still watch a ton of baseball, the 2011 French Open or the annual Memorial Day race the Indianapolis 500.

Hume Cronyn, the veteran character actor of stage, screen and television who often co-starred with his wife, the late Jessica Tandy, has died at his Connecticut home of complications from prostate cancer; he was 91. Well-known for his roles in recent films such as Cocoon and Marvin's Room, Cronyn made his acting debut onstage in 1931, playing a paperboy; three years later, he made his first appearance on Broadway in Hippers' Holiday, marking the beginning of an illustrious and versatile stage career which culminated in a 1964 Tony award for playing Polonius opposite Richard Burton's Hamlet. Cronyn began his film career in 1943 with a scene-stealing turn as a neighbor addicted to gruesome detective stories in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt. A year later, he appeared in Hitchcock's Lifeboat and also received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the World War II drama The Seventh Cross. Notable roles also included Phantom of the Opera, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Cleopatra, The Parallax View and There Was a Crooked Man. Cronyn frequently worked with his wife, Jessica Tandy, to whom he was married from 1942 until her death in 1994, appearing with her onstage in Foxfire and The Gin Game as well as in the Cocoon films; he won an Emmy opposite her in the TV film To Dance With the White Dog. A writer as well as an actor, he co-wrote Hitchcock's Under Capricorn, Rope and the Jane Fonda TV film The Dollmaker.
