Iron Fist – I’m talking about the Marvel/Netflix series – most certainly is not The Prisoner of 21st Century. It’s not even as good as Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. But from reading the reactions of the aforementioned critics and many others, I do not find it to be the You’re In The Picture of the 21st Century, a show so obscure and godawfullousy that only Bob Ingersoll remembers it.

I spent some time in Waco as a kid and it was always a friendly place to live, but not particularly bustling when I lived there (at least not when you come from London.) So when I had a chance to tour the Magnolia Market at the Silos and see what all of the excitement was about, I could not believe the hustle and bustle of the crowds shopping, kids running around playing, the lines at the Silos Baking Co. and the general excitement of people of all ages who were making the pilgrimage to Hgtv stars Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market and Gardens.

Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice” (The Film Arcade) is the latest mid-summer hit, joining the recent turnaround in art house fortunes. Following his template for “Sleepwalk With Me,” Birbiglia & Co. boosted box office via frequent appearances at their New York cinema. The already strong film surged to a huge initial $90,000 number with many sold out shows on multiple screens.

Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” (Lionsgate) continued to improve on the director’s recent performance, and could end up besting two other recent strong openers. “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street) and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard) continue to have strong expansions; both could end up over $10 million as well.

Asian wide-audience commercial releases are performing well in domestic play, with entries from South Korea, India, the Philippines along with China continuing to deliver strong niche results.

Blink and you’ll miss it, the new Woody Allen film, Café Society, is packed with the genius’s usual mile a minute musings, teachings, and even action. It’s Allen’s examination, after thoughtful analyses of towns from Barcelona to Paris, of that juggernaut of the West—dreaded by all real New Yorkers like Woody himself. But perhaps because Allen’s distaste for La La Land is all too real, the film quickly extracts itself from Los Angeles, and one is left hard pressed to distinguish Café Society from any Allen film of yore. While Café Society shows flashes of brilliance in its analysis of the ennui of life, it never coalesces into a sum greater than its promising parts.

One of movie fans favorite events of Oscar Week was held Thursday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, as the Academy held the eighth annual event celebrating the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film.

The evening featured clips from each film, followed by an onstage discussion with each group of nominated filmmakers.

This year’s eclectic mix – Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie and When Marnie Was There – are as international as they are distinct.

Employing a stunning variety of animation techniques, the nominees explored a wide range of topics, including existential despair, devastation of natural resources, learning to handle emotion, the value of friendship and surviving the difficulties of adolescence.

This year, members were able to stream the movies and voting came from all over the world.

The evening’s hosts were Don Hall, Chris Williams, Roy Conli, last year’s Oscar winning team from Big Hero 6.

If a romantic comedy called How to Be Single sounds rather baldly antithetical, that’s because the title is a bit of a misnomer. No, the commercials didn’t overtly deceive you: this is a glossy, New York-set ensemble rom-com, and it is populated by an assortment of camera-ready, charismatic actors, all of whom play single folk struggling to navigate the Big Apple’s hectic dating scene. Its characters are also all flying solo, for a variety of reasons and with wide-ranging levels of success.

But when it comes to actually instructing audiences in the ways of the lonely heart, the movie, directed by Christian Ditter, doesn’t have a clue. Its title would have been more accurate with punctuation added, so that it would appear less like a college seminar course (How to Be Single) and more like the socially regressive, queasily single-shaming lament it actually is for most of its length (How?...

World Club Dome is set to return to the Commerzbank Arena for its 2016 edition, and after last year saw record attendance, the event’s organizers have pulled out all the stops to ensure that this year’s festivities follow suit. The event is hosted by German radio station and promoter Big City Beats, whom have unveiled the star-studded lineup this week.

While the thought of German electronic music might call to mind images of shadowy underground nightclubs where obscure deep house and techno DJs slave over vinyl records, World Club Dome features a lineup fit for the Tomorrowland main stage. Martin Garrix, Armin Van Buuren and David Guetta are but a few of the names on the roster, in addition to the return of Hardwell.

The second feature from Brazilian filmmaker Alê Abreu is perhaps the most unlikely nominee for this year’s Best Animated Feature Oscar. Not that Boy & the World isn’t absolutely exquisite; it’s just that it got only a tiny release and so has bypassed even most animation fans, and it’s not from one of the major players in modern cartoons. Boy couldn’t be any further from the typical Pixar, Disney, Studio Ghibli, or Aardman movie: this is very nearly a one-man project from Abreu, who not only wrote and directed the film but also edited it and created the utterly unique hand-drawn animation himself.

The Legenderry line from Dynamite Entertainment takes well-known characters and reinvents them in a steampunk setting. I've enjoyed my time in this unique universe, and Dynamite's unique band of characters surprisingly suits the setting well. One of the most seamless cases is Green Hornet and Kato, whose look and characterization is just spot on thanks to writer Daryl Gregory and artist Brent Peeples. Now you can catch their solo adventure (though I do recommend giving the core Legenderry book a read as well) in their first trade paperback. Jack Larson, forever remembered as eager, wide-eyed cub reporter Jimmy Olsen on the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman, has died. He was 87.

Larson, who went on to produce several films with his longtime partner, James Bridges, died Sunday at his home in Brentwood, California, according to The New York Times. Additional details on his death have not been released.

It was announced today that Silva Screen Records will release composer Ilan Eshkeri’s ebullient score to Aardman Animation’s latest claymation shenanigans.

Also featured on the soundtrack are songs from Tim Wheeler (Ash), Eliza Doolittle and Rizzle Kicks who provide a remix of Life’s A Treat, the ever popular Shaun The Sheep TV theme.

Ilan Eshkeri is a British composer and songwriter best known for his concert work, songwriting collaborations, film scores and video game scores.

Recent film work includes Still Alice, for which Julianne Moore won an Oscar, Kevin Macdonald’s Black Sea starring Jude Law, 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves, and the Oscar nominated The Invisible Woman, Ralph Fiennes’ second outing as a director. Lionsgate and Studiocanal have released the official Shaun the Sheep Movie trailer for Aardman Animations’ upcoming stop-motion film. Based on the TV program of the same name, the story revolves around a sheep (named Shaun, obviously), who gets more than he bargained for when a day of fun turns into a day in the city with his entire flock. This trailer is pretty cute, and it’s neat to see that the sheep really don’t speak—they can only manage variations of “Bahhhh”. That puts this in a league similar to this summer’s Minions, but Aardman’s been doing great work in the world of stop-motion for quite some time, so odds are solid this will be charming as all get-out. On January 21st of this year, the Washington Post broke the story of the return of Milestone. Missing from the Post and every article since about the new Milestone 2.0 was any mention of me. I’m a founder and co-creator of the original Milestone’s best-known property, Static Shock.

There was to be a statement from Milestone explaining my absence, but in the three weeks since the story broke, Milestone 2.0 has not issued any statement.

Because there was no statement, comic book fans, Milestone fans, and my fan (I had two, one died) took to social media speculating as to why I was missing. Missing from news stories and missing from interviews, which was curious. I was no longer a part of the new venture, but in all the interviews, I was missing from the history of Milestone 2.0.

Benjamin Oberman, CEO of Film Festival Flix announces 25% of proceeds from festival pass sales to the Online Mountain and Adventure Film Festival will be donated to nine participating non-profit organizations. The benefiting organizations include: The Access Fund, Big City Mountaineers, National Parks Conservation Association, Yosemite Conservancy, Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Adventure Gap Scholarship Fund, Paradox Sports, and the American Alpine Club.

The Festival went live on February 1st with 44 films available for viewing online in a Netflix subscription style. Beginning February 9th, the festival will offer interactive Panel Discussions and Q&A’s with representatives of participating organizations, filmmakers, and athletes. “We want to support those organizations who advocate for the places and activities we love” says Oberman. Leveraging internet technologies to connect the festival with everyone interested, the Panels and Q&A’s will make use of Google Hangouts and Twitter Chats.

“Supporting these organizations isn’t just about sending a check. We want to provide a platform where they can share their mission, their 2015 initiatives, and invite viewers to get involved in supporting missions that speak to them” says Oberman. All videos and chats will be available following the interactive discussion on the festival website, social media channels, and through the festival media partners, Climbing Magazine and The Joy Trip Project.

On a surface level, it doesn’t seem that the sword and sorcery adventures of Red Sonja could fit in a Victorian steampunk story. However, in Legenderry: Red Sonja #1, writer Marc Andreyko and artist Aneke combine witty dialogue (and voiceovers), plenty of action, and hook readers in with a mystery/conspiracy plotline along with an equally mysterious foil for Red Sonja. Andreyko may lay this doubling on a little too thickly with the hooded woman’s inner monologue being the inverse of Sonja, but she propels the plot forward and will play a huge role in the miniseries as a whole. Aneke has a good command over space and pacing and uses jagged panels during the fight scenes to make them seem especially brutal. She even makes Red Sonja’s chainmail bikini sometimes...

Shaun the Sheep Movie is like curling up underneath a big cosy duvet with a steaming cup of sugary tea. Everything is precision engineered to enchant and amuse, dragging us into a paradise Britain fuelled by pleasant whimsy and running to clockwork comedy timing. From pastoral dale to bustling metropolis, this plasticine world (literally) bears the fingerprints of its loving creators.
