Mountie Buck Jones' brother, Inspector Edward Keane, is killed by Mexican bandit Fred Kohler. Since Kohler's just across the border, the Mounties can't do anything about it. Jones gets compassionate leave from Inspector J. P. McGowan, and heads south with sidekick Fred Rice. He joins Kohler's banditos and they begin disappearing one by one.
Jones is excellent here, obeying the rule of movie acting: plant your feet, look the camera in the eye, and tell the truth. Of course there will come the moment when Kohler figure out what's going on for a bang-up action finale, and it's nicely handled under Nick Grinde. Lona Andre, also sporting a Mexican accent, plays the love interest, although Silver, Jones' horse, speaks for all the pre-teen boys as he looks bored by the final clinch. Gertrude Astor also appears as a saloon girl. She had been the first actress signed to a contract at Universal Studios in 1915, and would appear in her last movie in 1966. She died in 1977 on her 90th birthday.
