The Great Waltz is a field day for music lovers plus elegant entertainment. Producers were nearly two years on this film, but the extra effort shows in the nicety with which its many component parts fit together. It is Luise Rainer who makes the film.
The tone is bright and the action brisk, and there are fun turns from Edmund Gwenn (as the priggish elder Strauss) and Fay Compton (as the younger Strauss’s matron and would-be seductress).
Decently crafted, but somewhat stiff and unremarkable.

At least its status as something of an outlier within Alfred Hitchcock’s filmography makes it a little interesting, but actually sitting through it proves to be an inconsistent sort of affair at best.
Apparently a filler movie taken while Hitch was under contract, this is entirely phoned in and almost completely devoid of any of those inspired flourishes that can make even the least of his pictures worth the watching.
