Today in Movie Culture: The R-Rated Wes Anderson, 'Star Wars' Spinoff Ideas and More
Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Fan Build of the Day: It's not enough to just build a soapbox race car in the form of a Batmobile. One team went extra creative by doing a Lego Batmobile (via Fashionably Geek):   Supercut of the Day: Do too many movie characters utter the words "now that's what I'm talking about"? Here's supercut evidence indicating yes:   Filmmaker in Focus: The latest supercut of Wes Anderson movies highlights just the swears:   Vintage Image of the Day: Charlie Chaplin dressed as a woman in A Woman (but not playing a woman, as he did in 1914's A Busy Day). You can also see the whole film, which was released 100 years ago this week, on...

UK TV ratings: Wimbledon coverage peaks at over 6m as Roger Federer beats Andy Murray
UKTV ratings roundup - data supplied by Barb

Wimbledon pulled in a strong audience for BBC One on men's semi-finals day this Friday (July 10), overnight ratings show.

BBC One's coverage averaged 4.29m (43.2%) from 1.45pm on Friday afternoon, as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer made the final. However, audiences peaked at 6.87m (48.9%) between 5.45pm and 6pm, when Federer broke Andy Murray's serve at the end of the second set on his way to a thrilling 7-5, 7-5, 6-4 victory over the 2013 Wimbledon champion.

Post-match analysis on BBC Two attracted an audience of 1.01m (6.2%) from 6.30pm, while the recently-revamped highlights show Wimbledon 2Day was seen by 1.06m (5.9%) from 8pm.

Back on BBC One, Chris Evans's last edition of The One Show entertained 3.33m (20.3%) at 7pm, while a repeat of A Question of Sport aired to 2.32m (13.6%) at 8pm.

Ed Catto: On the Road, On Free Comic Book Day
You’ve doubtlessly heard of Dante’s Inferno and his seven circles of hell. But did you know he had a couple of sequels, including Paradiso (i.e., Paradise)? I touch upon this I think that for so many geeks across the world, Free Comic Book Day is a uniquely shared day of celebration. This year, for this mini-paradise, I embarked on what was a sort of Circle of Free Comic Book Day: a seven store marathon Fcbd pilgrimage to learn how it’s changed and why it’s a bigger deal each and every year.

I live just outside of New York City in New Jersey, so I mapped out a plan of action to visit several stores for the 14th Annual Free Comic Book Day. Created by entrepreneur, retailer, visionary and all-around-great-guy, Joe Fields, this holiday has now grown to a worldwide event, distributing an estimated 5.3 million comics,...

It’s Been 100 Years Since Charlie Chaplin Started a Filmmaking Career as the Tyler Perry of His Day
Tomorrow is the 100th anniversary of the release of A Busy Day, a half-reeler in which Charlie Chaplin plays an angry suffragette (an alternate title was actually A Militant Suffragette) who becomes jealous of her husband during a parade of some kind. It probably isn’t the first instance of a man playing a woman in cinema (there’s no way it took 20 years), but it is the first film that’s really known as the original precursor to something like Tyler Perry‘s Madea character and others like it. Note that this isn’t the same as a Tootsie or Mrs. Doubtfire type, though Chaplin would do parts of that sort, playing a man who dresses as a woman, later on. Interestingly enough, he’s much prettier in one of those parts, that of The Masquerader (100 years old this August), than he is in A Busy Day. When I claim in the headline above that Chaplin...

Talkback: 'Enlisted' - 'Rear D Day'
Una giornata indaffarata (1914)
A busy day today means I don't have time to write about tonight's "Enlisted" — notable for the guest appearance by Andy Daly as dorky dad Rodney, for being yet another out-of-order episode (Derrick says it's only been two weeks since Pete punched the colonel in Afghanistan) and for a good Jill/Sgt. Major Cody subplot — but since you guys seem to be really enjoying the show so far, I figured I'd give you a chance to discuss "Rear D Day." Have at it.

Review: BBC America's 'Orphan Black' has fun with many faces
Una giornata indaffarata (1914)
There are some weeks so full of premieres that I don't have time to actually write reviews of all the shows I would like to, and then I content myself with the thought that at least I discussed them on the podcast with Dan. But of course not everybody listens to the podcast, and I wanted to take some of the praise about "Orphan Black" from this week's show and put it into written form. A busy day, so let's go right to the bullet points: * It debuts tomorrow night at 9 on BBC America (after the return of "Doctor...

Top 10 Dude Looks Like a Lady Movies
"I feel that I am very fortunate to have a lady friend that just happens to have an adam's apple."

Like so many other facets of Western culture that can trace their origins back to Ancient Greece — democracy, medicine, poetry, philosphy, among others — modern cinema owes a great deal to the Greeks and their festivals held in “theatrons” in honor of the god Dionysus. In those days, women were not allowed to participate in public life so any female roles were played by men.

Women have come a long way (baby) since then, but the tradition of men dressing like women made the leap from the stage to the screen when Charlie Chaplin played "Wife" in the 1914 short A Busy Day and the trend continues today, with entire franchises built around men in drag. Some men in drag movies are just that, a drag, but others have surprised, entertained, and enthralled us,...

'Animal Practice,' '1600 Penn' join NBC slate
Una giornata indaffarata (1914)
A busy day of pilot pickups for NBC continued on Monday (May 7) evening with series orders for "1600 Penn" and "Animal Practice."   According to media reports -- we'll cite HollywoodReporter.com this time -- NBC has given 13-episode orders to the two single camera comedies.   Those two pickups join "Save Me," "The New Normal" and "Revolution," all ordered earlier on Monday, as well as "Go On" and "Hannibal," which had been previously sent to series.   Executive produced by Jason Winer, Jon Lovett and Josh Gad, "1600  Penn" focuses on the domestic situation in the White House, with a...

Charles Chaplin
Mystery of Charlie Chaplin's birth unsolved, but here's a look at some of his greatest hits!
Charles Chaplin
News broke today that spies for Britain’s MI5 have been puzzling over the exact date of Charlie Chaplin’s birth. Despite Chaplin’s own claim that he was born in London on April 16, 1889, no proof exists to back up that claim. When all is said and done, it may go down as a mystery for the ages, but there’s no doubt about what the legendary comic did with the (presumed) 88 years that followed until his death on Dec. 25, 1977. Below, we run down some of the highlights of Chaplin’s 86-film career, which spanned five decades.

Decked out as his now-famous character,...

Alien (1979)
"Back to the Future" in Blu, Uwe Boll's in "Darfur" and More New DVDs
Alien (1979)
A look at what's new on DVD today:

"Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy"

Directed by Robert Zemeckis

Released by Universal Home Entertainment

Yes, we're finally getting the footage of the original Marty McFly, Eric Stoltz, for the first time, but for many simply having the hi-def version of Robert Zemeckis' time-travel franchise will be good enough. Commentaries, deleted scenes, a full-length documentary and much, much more come on this new set of the trilogy.

"Alien Anthology"

Directed by Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Released by Fox Home Entertainment

While not as much of an upgrade over its previous DVD release as "Back to the Future," the Blu-ray update of the four "Alien" films worth owning now boasts isolated scores for each film, all of Ridley Scott's sketches for the first "Alien," the uncut documentary of David Fincher's ill-fated "Alien 3" as...
