Breaking the fourth wall – the division between the worlds of the viewer and those on-screen – is a difficult feat. It can often come off as corny (think Clarissa Explains It All) or abrasive (anyone remember the first season of Sex and the City?). However, from the moment Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood stares into the screen and talks directly to the audience, this hubristic move throws viewers right into the middle of Underwood’s schemes, problems, passions and intentions.
In just a few seconds, viewers are sucked in to the power politics rife within the Washington Beltway, and learn that the dysfunction seen from afar looks quite different close up.
