The only thing I don't understand is the English title. "Jade Dynasty" doesn't have anything to do with the word "Zhu Xian". In the other words, those two titles are completely opposite. I wonder how and why did they give such an English title?
Talking about title, the title says Zhu Xian 1. So, I guess there's going to be sequel. And also, when the film's finished, I found some of the facts are missing and I feel like it's not complete one. Furthermore, they didn't explain who killed Zhang Xiaofan's the whole villagers. If they explained it, it'd be better.
I thought the film was going to be serious. But it turned out it wasn't that much. Still, it's good too. Some scenes are quite funny. I even laughed out loud. But as for the one who loves to watch more serious films, I'd say this one is not that much serious. That being said, comedy is sometimes necessary. So, even it's not that serious, but it's still watchable and I enjoyed it a lot.
All in all, I rarely watch around 2 hours run-time Chinese films. So, I can't write review that much. But what I can tell you is that the plot of this film is not that bad, the acting is quite good and the special effects used are fine. Hence, it makes quite a good film. Even if it isn't your taste, I think at least, it's going to be worth a watch. I don't know about others, as for me, I'm going to be looking forward for the second part if they are planning to make it.
The beginning of the film was pretty hilarious, but the plot/direction kind of disintegrated from there. Some of the transitions, character introductions, and plot points were confusing. Honestly, the "twist/emotional scene" near the end lacked power not particularly because of any acting issues, but that I didn't feel enough build up in the characters' relationship to be invested in the story.
Honestly, I feel like this was a situation where the entire production was disconnected from each other. The script was weak, the film wasn't long enough to fully develop the large cast of characters, they tried to include too many elements that weren't done well, and they probably tried to cut corners on production costs (that CGI, anyone?). Speaking to some of the other reviews: People need to produce better movies and not expect actors to carry the full weight of a bad script. With that being said, if all the cogs were at their best, this would be a completely different movie.
As mindless entertainment though, the acting was decent, there was a lot of situational humor, some fighting and explosions and love triangles and drama. It's worth a watch, but I probably wouldn't watch again.
That said, the performances were good and the costumes were nice. They did a good job with the atmosphere of the story, as it looked epic and fairy tale like. However, the CGIs were not good and kind of ruined the action scenes.
So, overall, six out of ten.
The performances, especially of Xiao Zhan, were in place and presented the character Zhang Xiaofan as a naïve man who gradually gets to know the world from his innocent point of view.
Then the character evolves to the point of becoming a being full of resentment and pain. This makes him an enemy of those who once saw him grow up.
The plot is like an irony of life, where a person is innocent until circumstances corrupt him. As the Swiss-French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau said: "Man is born good and society corrupts him"
Circumstances, deception, and malicious people harm a being who is clean, who has not hurt anyone, and who only wants to move on.
This part I must say is very emotional and manages to transmit that feeling to the audience to tears.
The settings are beautiful and all the characters interact harmoniously.
It's an excellent movie to watch.
