Gripping Indie Film

We watched the film after its release on Amazon prime after hearing about it from a friend and we were on the edge of our seats throughout the movie. It has a captivating story line with plenty of thought provoking and underlying social commentary. Clever undertow of current issues including healthcare and weapons, very relevant in these times. Although we have not seen the actors in other films, the cast was well chosen and the acting was excellent. I would highly recommend the film to anyone looking for a thrilling watch. We are looking forward to seeing other films from the talented director.

The effort paid off

Biased review: fair warning.

I was the Key Grip for this film and we made it in St. Francis, KS in November of 2020. We had to isolate crew by department in respective houses, have catering delivered by the producer Heather from the local caterer, film with a small crew, small budget, cold weather, limited sun, etc. Etc..

And we pulled it off.

The film isn't trying to be more than it can be. From what anyone can gather by watching the trailer you know it's about revenge in a small town with a limited cast because the story resides between a small group of people in a small area of the country.

The acting is good, great at moments, and I think the story is straight forward enough you see the complexity behind an individual's motives, especially in the end.

Going into this film I had no idea what we were doing: no storyboards or overheads. When I was told that Wedigo would be the DP and learned he was the DP for Pandorum, I was thrilled. He's a trooper. For his age, to be standing on set as long as every other crew member, simplifying lighting to meet deadlines and working with the resources at hand I give this man all the credit and more that he deserves.

Where this film grabbed me was the first four minutes, via the editing and score. Terrell Lamont made a fantastic collection of music and Justin Lewis proved his chops once again with the editing by going in a non-linear manner without convoluting the story. I didn't get confused when watching the movie and the editing style allowed for enough visuals without dwelling on the imagery. You understand the story and that's important.

Kudos to the crew and cast for plowing through and making this little gem.

Incredible film!

What a great little indie film this was! I was able to catch this film when it came to our small town film festival and my wife and I were fortunate enough to be at a screening where the filmmakers were in attendance. Perhaps it was my naivety but I was astonished to hear how small their crew was and the budget of course was much smaller than it looked. There are so many excellent films out there and this one in particular stuck with me. It is an indie but you wouldn't know it by the quality of cinematography or the acting or even the storyline. The biggest indicator was that I didn't recognize any of the actors. However, I must say that they were very convincing. The music also felt very professional and the entire production felt top notch. Needless to say, my hat's off to the filmmakers for this fun little film that kept me guessing all the way through. A wonderful night out for me and the wife! We will certainly be back.

Compelling and Captivating

Plight takes you on a journey full of unexpected twists and turns. It keeps you engaged the entire time. The visuals are compelling, the storyline is captivating and the performances are dynamic. It was refreshing to watch a film that kept me guessing and didn't feel formulaic. The music throughout felt appropriate for what we the audience should be feeling emotionally and was a great backdrop for the visuals. The editing felt very intentional with the pacing throughout and the story unfolded at just the right points. There was not any point in the movie that felt slow or dragged on unnecessarily. It was very well done and definitely worth the watch.

Sooooo bad

Can't believe this movie has got so many good reviews, the acting and story line is sooooo bad, my pet dog Snoochie Wooo could have done a better Job. I'm guessing the actors family and friend were the only ones that gave it such a good rating. Don't even waste an hour and twenty one minutes of your life watching this! Trust me.

Terrific Indie!

This film came to our town during our annual film festival and I must say it far exceeded my expectation.

My wife and I always try to make an effort to support the community festival that seems to grow bigger and bigger every year. Usually there are some cute, fun films that make you laugh but the slate they brought in this year was amazing with Plight at the top of the list for my wife and I.

The filmmakers were there afterwards answering questions. They made the trip out which we appreciated. To hear their process it made my fondness for the film rise even more. The film turned out to cost a fraction of what I would have guessed. It was thrilling from the first sequence to the last. Keeps you guessing, tear-jerks and entertains throughout. Sure, the film had a message but I appreciated that nothing seemed out of whack or forced. The story was very compelling and the performances nailed the mark. This was a very tight film about real people with real problems and real questions. Can't say the same for most of what's out there today.

5 stars 👍

Indie gold!

I love little indies that could... this movie had me staying up well after I watched it. Kind of just jarred me with how raw I was feeling afterwards. Such a human story and so well acted. Watching it you could feel the emotional waves the characters were going through. Some movies are intense just to be intense with loud yells and action. This movie was intense with all the opposite, the underlying tension and this constant feeling of what is going to happen next? Who is going to lose it? What is going to pop off?! Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the thrill ride it takes you on but it kept me thinking long and hard about what it means to be human. What we are capable of doing to each other... all I know is that I wanted to hug my mother after I watched this. So glad I watch indies because sometimes they feel more authentic than any of the blow em up shoot em up big budget movies that talk at you. Here I felt like I was just in it, and I loved that.

Did not see that coming!

Me and my husband stumbled upon this movie on Amazon Prime as it one of the films that was tagged as "New". This has to be one of the best finds that we have had the pleasure of discovering. We admittedly got ahead of ourselves before we realized that we had to take our foot off the gas and allow the layers of the story to be peeled back in its own time. Just when we thought we knew how this film was going to go, BAM, there were these twists and turns that took us by surprise and were nowhere near the plot that we had mapped out in our heads. It was so well thought out and such a great indie film. You can tell everyone involved really took their time with this one.

What a gem!

Saw this film at a film festival and loved every minute of it! Granted, there aren't any big names in it but the acting is solid, the story was engaging and the tension was palpable.

It's kind of a mixed bag at festivals but you typically know that going in if you've been to a few. Without giving anything away you're thrown into a world where a father loses his son in a "car accident" and grapples with the aftermath, battling his grief and his desire to find those responsible. Meanwhile his son's fiancée is clinging to life which brings her sister into the fold as a caretaker who helps pick up the pieces. The grieving father and the protective sister form an unlikely bond as they join forces to achieve a seemingly common goal: Justice

Plight was such a breath of fresh air for a genre that often times seems overcooked. Highly recommend!

Bold and unnerving!

Plight is a masterclass in independent filmmaking by MJ Alhabeeb Jr. Delivering an emotionally charged thriller that grips you from the first frame and doesn't let go. The film's strength lies in its layered storytelling-it's about family and the quiet battles we fight internally. The cinematography is beautifully haunting, perfectly complementing the unsettling tension that builds throughout. Plight proves that you don't need a massive budget to make a powerful impact. The characters are complex and the actors skilled in portraying their inner conflicts. A must-watch for fans of thought-provoking thrillers!

More than meets the eye

This was quite the surprise film for me. I kind of expected a quick and fun revenge thriller but it was so much deeper than I thought. The film follows two central characters who couldn't be more different in how they approach life, except for one common bond; their views on loyalty to loved ones. I must be honest, I thought I'd be watching an indie version of Taken littered with cliches and while there are some similarities, Plight delivered more intense realism than I've seen in awhile.

The setting for the film plays a pivotal role as well. It's the Midwest, in a dark and dreary town. The cinematography and music really set the tone for the world you are watching. I thought the performances were quite good given I didn't recognize any of the actors. The pace of the film was relentless; I actually had to wait to go to the bathroom lol no filler scenes to be had!

The twists capped it all off for me because I did NOT see those coming! This film is well worth a watch!

Quietly Devastating - A Must-Watch Indie Gem

Plight is the kind of film that sneaks up on you. It starts slow, almost quietly, and then-before you know it-it's wrapped itself around your gut and won't let go.

The writing is sharp but never showy. The characters feel like real people, the kind you might pass on the street without realizing what they're carrying inside. That's the magic here-Plight doesn't rely on spectacle. It builds tension from emotion, from trauma, from the ugly choices people make when they're desperate.

Matthew J. Plumb gives an incredibly raw performance. He doesn't play a hero or a villain-just a father in pain. And Ada Pasternak is so grounded as Valentina, you forget she's acting. Their scenes together are filled with this simmering tension that had me glued to the screen.

It's not an easy watch, but it's an important one. There's so much going on under the surface-grief, class, justice, and how far someone's willing to go when the system fails them.

In a world full of noise, Plight is a reminder that sometimes the quietest films hit the hardest.

Title: A Haunting, Beautiful Masterpiece - Plight Deserves to Be Seen

I didn't know what to expect going into Plight, but wow... it absolutely floored me.

The story kicks off with a tragic hit-and-run, and from there it just spirals into this emotional rollercoaster of grief, guilt, and revenge. What really caught me off guard was how real it all felt - like you're just dropped into these people's lives and watching them fall apart piece by piece. No Hollywood fluff, no forced drama - just raw, human pain.

The performances were incredible. Matthew J. Plumb as Joe? Completely believable. You feel his anger, his heartbreak, his obsession. And Ada Pasternak as Valentina - quiet but powerful. There's this tension between them that keeps you hooked, and you're never quite sure who's going to snap first.

It's not a "feel-good" movie, but it's the kind of film that sticks with you. It asks hard questions about justice, forgiveness, and how far someone's willing to go when they've lost everything.

Visually it's simple, but in the best way - nothing flashy, just focused on the story. And the pacing? Super tight. I wasn't checking the clock once.

Honestly, Plight deserves way more attention. It's intense, emotional, and totally worth the watch. If you like grounded thrillers that mess with your head a little and make you feel something - this is it.

Big Drama

I was lucky enough to experience the premiere in St. Francis, KS. The director/writer had a Q&A and it was great to hear the behind-the-scenes and stories. Very refreshing to see an original movie with no remake material or flashy special effects. The acting was good and it was nice to see the international connection and close personal parallels with the characters. There were definitely some surprises and twists that made it a unique movie-going experience. Lots of drama and suspense, well worth watching! If you're looking for an exciting film with original content and some poignant connections, give this a try!

What a surprise!

Wow! What an amazing little film... I'm an indie film junior, and not just the big budget Neon and A24 stuff but the true, actual "indies" and over the weekend I had a chance to catch Dangerous Animals (a bigger indie with Jai Courtney and Hassie Harrison) and this random film, Plight with... nobody I recognized but I'm sure I will recognize them in the future! DA was fun and juicy to take in but I walked away from my viewing of Plight in complete awe at how jaw-dropping the events were as they unfolded one by one. It's set up plops you right in from the get-go with a hit and run accident. A father loses a son, a sister must now struggle to care for her own and their mission to find those responsible takes off from there. I did NOT expect the subtle commentaries on the world we live in and the "plight" of so many in so many different classes, genders, economic backgrounds to be as clean and seamless as how the writer worked them in but somehow he did. It did not derail the flow of the film which is an intense thriller. It actually elevated it tremendously by giving this quasi-revenge story some layers to it. I'd love to say much more but it's tough without giving away the plot and the through line of the film. I will simply say that I got much more than I bargained for and as a champion of indie film, I crown this one as one of my favorites.

LOVED IT!!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this film!! I am partial to stories of women fighting back or taking control of precarious situations and I thought this film did that with multiple women.

Strong females on screen are rare these days, well, really any day but the women here fought back not just physically but strategically, emotionally and psychologically.

The characters of Valentina and Mia were thrown into positions where they had to act fast to save themselves, children and other women at risk and they did so by outsmarting and outwitting their counterparts.

The film is not just about women fighting back but it is also a story of the haves vs the have nots. The central male figure, Joe takes matters into his own hands when he has nowhere to turn while looking for justice for his son. At first you can kind of tell he's the rough around the edges, off color comment spewing midwestern guy but I took a liking to him over time. His goal is simple. Revenge and justice for his loved ones. He predictably tries to bully his way through anyone and everyone especially Valentina with whom he forms a partnership with but while his intentions are not always the sincerest, his persistence in honoring those he cares for is evident throughout and I could dig that.

Highly recommend if you want to see layered characters in high stake situations fighting for what they believe in.

Powerful enthralling film

I really enjoyed this film. The premise is strong and involving. You can feel engaged with the main characters and how the events in the film affect them. The idea of a rich and well connected man getting away with a miserable crime, is hardly new but this story really brings new aspects to it, particularly as the story develops. I would recommend this to anyone who really wants to be engaged with the film they are watching. Excellent!!!!

Guild Delight

I saw this film last night at the Guild Cinema, my favorite indie theater in Albuquerque. I was pleasantly surprised. Most indie thrillers are fairly predictable. This film kept me on my toes with both tension and curiosity. The beautiful cinematography captured the not so beautiful exteriors of Western Pennsylvania, a mood and tone that certainly contributed to the despair felt by the main characters. It took me back to one of my favorite films from a few years ago, Prisoners. Felt like this was in a similar world. By the end of the film I was shocked to see the resolution and most of all I could not fathom an indie film with such a stellar cast of unknowns. These talented actors and filmmakers won't stay unknown for long!

Stunning Work

I was able to watch the film at the Albuquerque premiere and was beyond pleased with the film. The acting and cinematography had me nailed to the seat and my eyes glued to the screen.

I don't watch many films, and I watch even less drama, but I found I couldn't look away. The story was well written and the actors told that story with aplomb. Worth a second viewing in my opinion.

Gripping and emotional indie thriller

A gripping and complex emotional story. At times shocking and at others sad, this thriller will keep you guessing until the very end!

There are interwoven themes of poverty, injustice, love, connection, and revenge.

It is beautifully shot with gritty scenes of real life in Ukraine and Pennsylvania. A warning - there is some violence but it is not gratuitous.

Gut-wrenching but beautiful

Couldn't believe I hadn't heard of this film. What a treat it was to watch! My weekend at the movies I thought would be a little light (Freakier Friday) and a little fierce (Weapons) and it ended up fierce and intense as hell! This movie will absolutely ROCK you to the core if you're not ready for it. Just gut-wrenching but beautiful and poignant. Love the dual storytelling with Pennsylvania and Ukraine. Tons of great performances all around and kept me wondering how it would all wrap up. Had me in absolute tears by the end but who doesn't love a good cry?

Fascinating, independent American film

It is always a pleasure when I stumble upon a little film with unknowns in every role both on screen and behind the camera, and the film delivers. Excellent visuals, a brooding musical score and power packed performances from actors soon to be discovered. The questioning of our own moral doctrine is what I took away the most. My wife and I spent nearly an hour discussing which of the two leads was in the right and whether their decisions we would make ourselves. Fascinating, independent American film that left us with much to ponder.
