The merger between Skydance and Paramount just finalized last week, and already, Star Trekfans are getting some great news. It seems like the franchise, which turns 60 years old in 2026, will be seeing a new light under the newly merged companies.

Deadline reports that the Star Trek franchisewill be a “priority” for Paramount, along with other tentpoles like Top Gun.“One of our biggest priorities is restoring Paramount as the No. 1 studio for filmmakers and talent in the world,”said Paramount’s new CEO, David Ellison, at a press conference. Ellison has been involved with Star Trek since the 2013 Kelvin Universe film, Star Trek: Into Darkness. Ellison continued, “Great filmmakers make great movies. For us, we're going to strategically scale the amount of content for our streaming service as well as studios.”

“Star Trek is a priority across the company,” said Dana Goldberg, Vice-Chair of Platforms and Chair of Paramount Television.

Pinewood Toronto Studios is set to name one of its soundstages after Paul Bronfman, the Canadian industry pioneer who died in February at age 67.

Bronfman was a longtime chairman of Pinewood Toronto Studios, and before that a founding partner and a major shareholder in Filmport Studios, a production studio complex that opened in Toronto’s portlands in 2008. A year later, the facility was rebranded as Pinewood Toronto Studios, with Bronfman in the role of chairman and a key shareholder.

In 2023, Bronfman sold his minority stake to the Pinewood Group, the London-based studio group that runs Pinewood Studios in the U.K. and now owns all of the Toronto mega-studio.

The teaser trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is here and it’s a different vibe than traditional Trek.

The first live-action Star Trek project to focus on characters in their early 20s, Starfleet Academy features a largely Gen Z cast playing a class of cadets in San Francisco training for their debut space adventure. The show also stars Holly Hunter, who plays the Academy’s chancellor, and Paul Giamatti, who plays a recurring alien villain in the show.

The trailer (below) which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday is narrated by Hunter’s character giving a reception speech to the class, saying they will learn “the skills that shaped our greatest officers.” But what’s more interesting about the footage — and sure to be debated by longtime (read: old) Star Trek fans — are the visuals of the young cast as they bond, flirt, dance and look longingly at the stars.

This week, the Apple TV+ project jumped past Netflix's Nonnas in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions to climb into the fifth spot for Best TV Movie. That's significant because the category will just have five nominees due to there only being 39 total submissions. The other four predicted nominees: Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Disney +'s Out of My Mind, Peacock's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and HBO's Mountainhead.

For those unfamiliar with The Gorge, Scott Derrickson's original sci-fi film stars Miles Teller as Levi Kane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa, two elite snipers tasked with guarding opposite sides of a deep gorge, unaware of what mysteries lie below. Sigourney Weaver also stars as Bartholomew. Despite its middling 63 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes, TV critics hailed The Gorge for its successful mixing of genres, switching effortlessly between being an endearing romance and a high-octane thriller.

Paramount+ today announced that the fan-favorite original series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fifth and final six-episode season ahead of the third season premiere this summer. Production will begin on the final season later this year.

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to premiere with two episodes on Thursday, July 17, on Paramount+ in the U.S. Following the premiere, new episodes will drop weekly on Thursdays, with the season finale on Thursday, September 11.

The fourth season of the series, which earned a Certified Fresh recognition from Rotten Tomatoes for its first two seasons, is currently in production. With less than a month until the premiere, Netflix is starting to unveil more information about its upcoming thriller series The Waterfront. This week, series creator Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) talked to Entertainment Weekly about several aspects of the show and singled out one character — Grady, played by Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3). The new series is set to premiere on June 19.

Grace is widely known for doing comedy — especially the long-running sitcom That 70's Show — and, even though he's done drama and thrillers in his career, you don't necessarily think of him when imagining a character that can give you chills. From the looks of it, this is about to change with The Waterfront. During the interview, Williamson talked about Grace's approach to the character. He stated:

The so-called Mirror Universe from the "Star Trek" franchise was first glimpsed in the original series' 1967 episode "Mirror, Mirror." That episode saw Kirk (William Shatner) and a few of his Enterprise crewmates accidentally beamed into a parallel dimension thanks to an ion storm. This parallel universe was similar to Kirk's home, only everyone was evil. The U.S.S. Enterprise was now an imperial ship of conquest, and it was common for underlings to assassinate their superiors in order to advance their careers. Starfleet officers were also all equipped with widgets called Agonizers, which their bosses used to inflict painful punishments.

The Mirror Universe wouldn't be seen again until the 1994 "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Crossover." There, it was revealed that the Imperial Fleet had been overrun by Klingons and Romulans in that alternate reality, leaving humans enslaved by a new Empire.

The Star Trek franchise has existed since 1966. It started with a humble television series that proved extremely popular over the decades. The original show’s syndication success led to the first feature film based on it, which was released in 1979.

It's time for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to boldly go further into comedy territory.

Per Popverse, Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding appeared at Emerald City Comic Con's Strange New Worlds panel, where they talked about the show's love of genre pastiche and what genre should be parodied in future seasons. Specifically, Gooding wanted to see Strange New Worlds tackle "Reality. Like, very Abbott Elementary, St. Denis Medical, The Office, just something like that." When the moderator asked if that meant applying The Office's signature mockumentary-style format to an episode's cinematography, they responded, "Sure."

Among Strange New World's most acclaimed episodes last season included a crossover with Star Trek:Lower Decks -- utilizing both animated sequences and casting Lower Decks' actors as their characters -- and a musical storyline where an "improbability field" causes the USS Enterprise crew to break into song and dance.

There's no denying that Star Trek: Section 31 left a bad taste in the mouths of many die-hard Trekkies thanks to what they feel was a film filled with weak characters and an even weaker plot that didn't seem like a Star Trek movie. In the 2025 TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31," Starfleet gathers a loose-knit group of freelance criminals and mercenaries to retrieve a doomsday weapon from a mysterious rogue a-hole. Section 31 topped Frozen and Dune Part 2 for the week of Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, despite those films holding an impressive 168 million and 153 million streaming minutes respectively. The Top 10 ranking is surprising since Section 31 is the worst-reviewed film in the franchise's 14-movie history.

The Star Trek movie franchise is in a current state of flux with the cast of Star Trek Beyond (2016), led by Chris Pine, tapped to return for “Star Trek 4”. Given the understandable concerns about the cast’s age (after nine years since "Beyond") with reprising their roles in “Star Trek 4”, combined with the disappointing Paramount+ movie “Star Trek: Section 31” – the franchise needs to consider changes to reignite their fanbase.

The success of The Night Agent is apparently not a one-season phenomenon.

The Netflix thriller recorded its biggest week to date with the opening of its second season. The show amassed 3.11 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Jan. 20-26 (season two premiered Jan. 23), according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, topping its previous best of 3.06 billion minutes in March 2023.

Nielsen says viewing of season two accounted for 76 percent of the weekly total, which works out to about 2.36 billion minutes.

After making its debut on the streaming charts a week earlier, Apple TV+’s Severance improved a little on that performance with 622 million minutes of viewing (a gain of about 6 percent week to week). That’s the highest weekly total for any Apple TV+ show since Ted Lasso in 2023.
