Michelle Yeoh is opening up about the failure of the Section 31 movie and how she feels about her turn in what’s now seen as the worst Star Trek film!
For years, fans often considered Star Trek V: The Final Frontier as the worst Star Trek movie ever. It’s easy to slam it on the low budget, weak story, bad effects, and William Shatner’s terrible direction. However, in 2025, a new contender took the crown of bad Trek movies.
Section 31 was originally intended to be a TV show focusing on the black-ops division of Starfleet. A decision was made to narrow it down to a TV movie on Paramount+,...

Quentin Tarantino's R-rated "Star Trek" movie isn't happening anymore, but that doesn't mean people are ready to stop talking about it. The thought of Tarantino boldly going where no man -- including him -- has gone before is an intriguing prospect. After all, until the trashy B-movie hoot that is "Star Trek: Section 31" came along and showcased the sleazier side of the "Star Trek" galaxy, the sci-fi franchise was PG. A carnage-filled Tarantino take on the lore, with Mark L. Smith writing the script, could have been fun, and it would have been interesting to see if the filmmaker could work within the parameters of Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" rulebook. (Spoiler: He probably wouldn't have.)
Based on what we do know about Smith and Tarantino's unmade movie, however, it seems that it really would have marched to the beat of its own drum. Speaking at a 2025 Fan Expo panel moderated by Collider,...

The merger between Skydance and Paramount just finalized last week, and already, Star Trekfans are getting some great news. It seems like the franchise, which turns 60 years old in 2026, will be seeing a new light under the newly merged companies.
Deadline reports that the Star Trek franchisewill be a “priority” for Paramount, along with other tentpoles like Top Gun.“One of our biggest priorities is restoring Paramount as the No. 1 studio for filmmakers and talent in the world,”said Paramount’s new CEO, David Ellison, at a press conference. Ellison has been involved with Star Trek since the 2013 Kelvin Universe film, Star Trek: Into Darkness. Ellison continued, “Great filmmakers make great movies. For us, we're going to strategically scale the amount of content for our streaming service as well as studios.”
“Star Trek is a priority across the company,” said Dana Goldberg, Vice-Chair of Platforms and Chair of Paramount Television.

Pinewood Toronto Studios is set to name one of its soundstages after Paul Bronfman, the Canadian industry pioneer who died in February at age 67.
Bronfman was a longtime chairman of Pinewood Toronto Studios, and before that a founding partner and a major shareholder in Filmport Studios, a production studio complex that opened in Toronto’s portlands in 2008. A year later, the facility was rebranded as Pinewood Toronto Studios, with Bronfman in the role of chairman and a key shareholder.
In 2023, Bronfman sold his minority stake to the Pinewood Group, the London-based studio group that runs Pinewood Studios in the U.K. and now owns all of the Toronto mega-studio.

We haven’t gotten a new Star Trek movie since 2016. Admittedly, that’s not counting Paramount+’s streaming movie Star Trek: Section 31, but that’s probably a good thing anyway. We’re talking about Star Trek Beyond, released nine years ago this summer. So will the Star Trek franchise live long and prosper once again on the big screen? That might fall on one man: David Ellison, who founded and serves as CEO and chairman of Paramount Skydance Corporation.

The teaser trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is here and it’s a different vibe than traditional Trek.
The first live-action Star Trek project to focus on characters in their early 20s, Starfleet Academy features a largely Gen Z cast playing a class of cadets in San Francisco training for their debut space adventure. The show also stars Holly Hunter, who plays the Academy’s chancellor, and Paul Giamatti, who plays a recurring alien villain in the show.
The trailer (below) which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday is narrated by Hunter’s character giving a reception speech to the class, saying they will learn “the skills that shaped our greatest officers.” But what’s more interesting about the footage — and sure to be debated by longtime (read: old) Star Trek fans — are the visuals of the young cast as they bond, flirt, dance and look longingly at the stars.

The "Star Trek" universe is as vast and diverse as the galactic adventures the series has chronicled across film and television. The franchise has left an indelible mark on our humble planet since the original series first debuted in 1966. In the intervening years, a unique and talented crop of trailblazers have assumed the helms of various Federation ships, taking us on voyages to new adventures, battles, and diplomatic efforts.
What has always differentiated "Star Trek" from that other space franchise is its focus on embracing new species and cultures, fostering peace, and learning how to live collectively. Sure, phasers are cool, but weapons never steal the show like lightsabers do. Instead, "Star Trek" paints a picture of a utopian world that's starting to look pretty good to present-day viewers.
Accordingly, the captains on this list represent the best of the best that "Star Trek" has to offer, and it is...

Netflix may have said goodbye to Ozark, but its spiritual successor is holding the fort — and then some. The Waterfront, the streamer’s new gritty crime drama, has proven to be a major global hit, dominating Netflix’s Top 10 English-language shows list for three straight weeks before finally dropping to No. 2 in its fourth week. The series, which features a sharp ensemble cast and moody slow-burn storytelling in the tradition of Ozark and Bloodline, has pulled in over 36 million views globally and racked up 229 million hours of watch time. While it finally slipped from the top spot this week — replaced by The Sandman Season 2 — The Waterfront’s initial run has been nothing short of a win for Netflix.

The newest Star Trekfeature film may have the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any movie in the franchise, but that’s not stopping people from streaming it. Per FlixPatrol, Star Trek: Section 31 is becoming a sleeper streaming hit. The 2025 movie starring Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh is currently sitting in the No. 10 spot on Paramount+’s Top 10 movies as of July 9.
Star Trek: Section 31 was the first Star Trek movie to go straight to streaming and not get a theatrical release. It was also the first film overall since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. The movie, in addition to Yeoh, also stars Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, Robert Kazinsky, Stacy Rohl, and Sven Ruygrok. The Paramount+ exclusive film stars Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, who runs a nightclub called the Baraam is then tapped to join Section 31, a covert black-ops division of Starfleet.

The Power Universe continues to thrive eleven years after the original Power debuted in the summer of 2014.
It’s hard to imagine that Starz foresaw what a phenomenon the series would be, as it quickly became the cable network’s biggest show and spawned several spinoffs that are still airing to this day.
A show about a drug dealer trying to go legit (sort of) became a sensation, and at one point, it was one of the most talked-about shows on social media.

Fans loved to come together to rant and rave about Ghost, Tommy, Kanan, Angela, and Tasha as they made dumb moves in the name of family or something else ridiculous, and we ate it up every single time.
When the show ended after six seasons, fans were rightfully upset, but jumping right into Power Book II: Ghost helped ease some of the pain, as Tariq St.

Are Emmy voters about to gorge themselves on The Gorge?
This week, the Apple TV+ project jumped past Netflix's Nonnas in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions to climb into the fifth spot for Best TV Movie. That's significant because the category will just have five nominees due to there only being 39 total submissions. The other four predicted nominees: Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Disney +'s Out of My Mind, Peacock's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and HBO's Mountainhead.
For those unfamiliar with The Gorge, Scott Derrickson's original sci-fi film stars Miles Teller as Levi Kane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa, two elite snipers tasked with guarding opposite sides of a deep gorge, unaware of what mysteries lie below. Sigourney Weaver also stars as Bartholomew. Despite its middling 63 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes, TV critics hailed The Gorge for its successful mixing of genres, switching effortlessly between being an endearing romance and a high-octane thriller.

A little over a month after its Season 1 debut, Netflix has officially renewed the psychological thriller Betfor a second season. Premiering on May 15, the show is loosely inspired by the massively popular Japanese manga series, Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, which was created by Homura Kawamoto and Tōru Naomura way back in 2014, and got an anime adaptation in 2017. What if E.T. was less cute and cuddly, and instead resembled a razor-jawed H.R. Giger creature from Alien? And what if that alien's appetites tended more towards living flesh than delicious Reese's Pieces? Despite taking heavy fire from the critics when it was released earlier this year, Star Trek: Section 31 has made a surprise return to the streaming charts. Currently the Star Trek project with the lowest score on Rotten Tomatoes, the streaming-original film has warped back into the top ten on Paramount+'s streaming rankings. Section 31 had a troubled production history: originally slated to be a TV series, it ventured into unknown space when star Michelle Yeoh, who was to reprise her character from Star Trek: Discovery, won her first-ever Best Actress Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once. With Yeoh now a hot Hollywood commodity, the series was restructured into a streaming-original movie, the first ever for the franchise.

More and more shows and movies based on existing franchises are being released, but that might not be in the best long-term interest of media companies.
When the announcement of casting for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione for the new “Harry Potter” TV series hit the internet last week, it kicked off the inevitable firestorm of controversy from viewers outraged that fictional characters were to be portrayed differently from the image they’d created in their heads. But zooming out from that debate, the news highlighted a trend in entertainment that has been impossible to miss over the past decade: the increased focus on franchises as a source for content. While much of the handwringing over Hollywood’s lack of original ideas has been focused on the movies, the streaming industry is leaning into this trend as well. So, I thought now would be a good time to...

With less than a month until the premiere, Netflix is starting to unveil more information about its upcoming thriller series The Waterfront. This week, series creator Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) talked to Entertainment Weekly about several aspects of the show and singled out one character — Grady, played by Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3). The new series is set to premiere on June 19.
Grace is widely known for doing comedy — especially the long-running sitcom That 70's Show — and, even though he's done drama and thrillers in his career, you don't necessarily think of him when imagining a character that can give you chills. From the looks of it, this is about to change with The Waterfront. During the interview, Williamson talked about Grace's approach to the character. He stated:
"He brings sort of an unexpectedness to the role. He feels unpredictable. And so we were able to write toward that. So...

The third season of Star Trek: Picard memorably brought back the majority of the cast of The Next Generation, a move that was celebrated by fans. Season 3 drew a near-perfect score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, which was firmly the highest of all three seasons.
There was a downside to bringing back the stars of The Next Generation, even if it resulted in very high acclaim. Per ScreenRant, Terry Matalas was doing an interview for The Sackhoff Show when addressed becoming sole showrunner for Season 3 after serving as co-showrunner alongside Akiva Goldsman for Season 2. He remembered having a vision to make Season 3 feel more like The Next Generation, and from there, all it took was getting Patrick Stewart on board. Unfortunately, the budget would not allow for Stewart's co-stars from the first two seasons to return, meaning that "sacrifices" had to be made.

Michelle Yeoh has her next project. The Oscar-winning actress, who played Emperor Philippa Georgiou on Star Trek: Discovery and the recent spin-off Paramount+ movie Star Trek: Section 31, will star in an action film titled The Surgeon. It will be produced by Thunder Road, the company behind the John Wick saga and its assorted sequels and spin-offs. Roshan Sethi, a physician and co-creator of the Fox television series The Resident, is set to write and direct The Surgeon.
Given Yeoh’s status as an international action icon, she will surely be called upon to beat up more than a few bad guys. According to the entertainment site Deadline, “The film will follow a retired surgeon (Yeoh) who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient. Though greatly outnumbered, her captors have overlooked her greatest weapon: 35 years of surgical experience, leading to an explosive and brutal confrontation during which...

Held under clear skies, Canneseries kickstarted Thursday with much panache via the out-of-competition French premiere of Paramount+’s ‘”The Agency,” a remake of the French hit thriller “The Bureau.”
For its eighth edition, the festival was slightly overshadowed, however, when jury president Norman Reedus of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” fame had to cancel at the last minute for other work commitments. He was replaced by jury member Jeff Russo, Emmy-awarded composer of “Fargo,” also credited for “Ripley” and “Star Trek: Section 31.” Co-jurors of the main competition remained “Pachinko” showrunner Soo Hugh, actors Louise Bourgoin, Lola Dueñas and César Domboy, who walked the pink carpet on Thursday evening.
Crowd onlookers who expected “The Agency” stars Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere or the aforementioned Reedus to share a selfie with them were perhaps disappointed, such as a young Thea, in her 20s, who was coming from Nice to have a...

The so-called Mirror Universe from the "Star Trek" franchise was first glimpsed in the original series' 1967 episode "Mirror, Mirror." That episode saw Kirk (William Shatner) and a few of his Enterprise crewmates accidentally beamed into a parallel dimension thanks to an ion storm. This parallel universe was similar to Kirk's home, only everyone was evil. The U.S.S. Enterprise was now an imperial ship of conquest, and it was common for underlings to assassinate their superiors in order to advance their careers. Starfleet officers were also all equipped with widgets called Agonizers, which their bosses used to inflict painful punishments.
The Mirror Universe wouldn't be seen again until the 1994 "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Crossover." There, it was revealed that the Imperial Fleet had been overrun by Klingons and Romulans in that alternate reality, leaving humans enslaved by a new Empire.

The Star Trek franchise has existed since 1966. It started with a humble television series that proved extremely popular over the decades. The original show’s syndication success led to the first feature film based on it, which was released in 1979.
Since then, the franchise has been rebooted and later expanded on television with multiple spin-offs. However, for years, the William Shatner-directed Star Trek V remained arguably the worst film entry, which nearly ended the expansive franchise decades ago.

It's time for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to boldly go further into comedy territory.
Per Popverse, Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding appeared at Emerald City Comic Con's Strange New Worlds panel, where they talked about the show's love of genre pastiche and what genre should be parodied in future seasons. Specifically, Gooding wanted to see Strange New Worlds tackle "Reality. Like, very Abbott Elementary, St. Denis Medical, The Office, just something like that." When the moderator asked if that meant applying The Office's signature mockumentary-style format to an episode's cinematography, they responded, "Sure."
Among Strange New World's most acclaimed episodes last season included a crossover with Star Trek:Lower Decks -- utilizing both animated sequences and casting Lower Decks' actors as their characters -- and a musical storyline where an "improbability field" causes the USS Enterprise crew to break into song and dance.

There's no denying that Star Trek: Section 31 left a bad taste in the mouths of many die-hard Trekkies thanks to what they feel was a film filled with weak characters and an even weaker plot that didn't seem like a Star Trek movie. However, actor Rob Kazinskysays the film wasn't made for the hardcore fan base, and that if the franchise is to continue into the future, you have to try and make "different flavors" that will appeal to everyone to prevent it from "dying."

In the 2025 TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31," Starfleet gathers a loose-knit group of freelance criminals and mercenaries to retrieve a doomsday weapon from a mysterious rogue a-hole. The mercenaries don't know the true identity of the a-hole, but they do know that the doomsday weapon was constructed by their own leader, the vicious tyrant, Empress Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). The character of Empress Georgiou first appeared on "Star Trek: Discovery," and she has been repeatedly established as a horrid monster. She has murdered literally billions of people, tortures people for fun, and is a cannibal. Despite this, she is presented in "Section 31" as a roguish loose cannon, capable of leading a motley crew of sci-fi misfits on a mission of heroism.

At this time last year, few likely had heard of Richard Gadd or Jessica Gunning, and the term “baby reindeer” didn’t immediately call to mind a harrowing exploration of sexual abuse and codependency. Yet, within a month, Baby Reindeer became one of last year’s most widely seen shows, and when the Emmy Awards announced its winners in the limited series and movie categories in September, Gadd, Gunning, and Baby Reindeer won. That’s illustrative of how quickly fortunes can change in the limited series race, which typically resets each season (save for an anthology series like Monsters or Fargo). Ahead, the early 2025 Emmy Awards odds in the movie/limited series categories.

In 2017, "Star Trek" returned to the small screen after a 12-year hiatus with the debut of "Star Trek: Discovery," a big-budget show with slicker production values than the franchise had ever seen. It debuted on Paramount+ (still called CBS All Access in 2017), and it was to be the first of many new "Star Trek" shows that the streaming service would debut over the next few years. It was followed by "Short Treks," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and "Star Trek: Prodigy." The original U.S.S. It was almost a decade since a feature film was released under the Star Trek umbrella, which isn’t surprising as Star Trek Beyond, despite being a critical hit, was considered a commercial failure due to its massive budget. For better or worse, the wait finally ended with the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek: Section 31, which was released as a Paramount Plus exclusive in January.

On the 97th Academy Awards show which aired on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Zoe Saldana became the second Star Trek actress to win an Oscar in an acting category. Saldana won Best Supporting Actress for the groundbreaking film Emilia Perez in which most of the dialogue (barring a few moments in English) is sung in Spanish.
Saldana starred in the rebooted Kelvin timeline Star Trek movies (2009 – 2016) from J.J. Abrams, as Communications Officer Lt. Nyota Uhura. Saldana gushed over her husband [Marco Perego Saldana] and family in her teary Oscar acceptance speech saying “To my husband with that beautiful hair, you're just…the biggest honor in my life is being your partner…”
Saldana further expressed that she is the first American of Dominican origin to win an Academy Award, and she knows she will not be the last. Speaking of certainties, it seems certain that Star Trek creators have another in-demand Oscar-winning actress...

Fans and critics alike haven’t been kind to the newest Star Trek original movie Star Trek: Section 31. The film is currently sitting with a 19% Tomatometer score and an even lower Popcornmeter rating of 16% among fans, making it one of the worst-received Star Trek projects in franchise history.
It seems no one wants to give the film credit, but it seems that fans of the franchise were more than willing to give it a try given the recently released streaming figures from Nielsen!
The Michelle Yeoh-led original film managed to rack up 170 million minutes viewed during the week of Jan. 20 - Jan. 26, helping it land at the No. 8 spot on the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming chart for films. While No. 8 might not seem notable, it’s important to point out that Star Trek: Section 31 wasn’t even released on Paramount+ until Jan. 24 meaning it pulled in 170 million...

Star Trekfans are curious about the very first streaming film in the franchise, Paramount+’s Star Trek: Section 31.
Per Trek Movie, the film, starring Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, has ranked in the Nielsen Top 10 for the week of Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, 2025. The story focuses on the black-ops division of Starfleet, known as Section 31, which was first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the 1990s. The streaming movie premiered on Jan. 24, and for the first week, held the number eight spot with 170 million minutes streamed.

Section 31 topped Frozen and Dune Part 2 for the week of Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, despite those films holding an impressive 168 million and 153 million streaming minutes respectively. The Top 10 ranking is surprising since Section 31 is the worst-reviewed film in the franchise's 14-movie history.

The Star Trek movie franchise is in a current state of flux with the cast of Star Trek Beyond (2016), led by Chris Pine, tapped to return for “Star Trek 4”. Given the understandable concerns about the cast’s age (after nine years since "Beyond") with reprising their roles in “Star Trek 4”, combined with the disappointing Paramount+ movie “Star Trek: Section 31” – the franchise needs to consider changes to reignite their fanbase.
Star Trek creators should completely flip the canon on its head with an entirely new approach. There was somewhat of an attempt at this in “The Burn” storyline in the series "Star Trek: Discovery" with the sudden act of Dilithium (the element needed for warp drive propulsion) becoming inert and destroying most of Federation starships across the galaxy. This rendered Starfleet and space travel obsolete and on a path of rebuilding the Federation.

The success of The Night Agent is apparently not a one-season phenomenon.
The Netflix thriller recorded its biggest week to date with the opening of its second season. The show amassed 3.11 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Jan. 20-26 (season two premiered Jan. 23), according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, topping its previous best of 3.06 billion minutes in March 2023.
Nielsen says viewing of season two accounted for 76 percent of the weekly total, which works out to about 2.36 billion minutes.
After making its debut on the streaming charts a week earlier, Apple TV+’s Severance improved a little on that performance with 622 million minutes of viewing (a gain of about 6 percent week to week). That’s the highest weekly total for any Apple TV+ show since Ted Lasso in 2023.
