Apart from the obvious similarities and their collaboration as a father-son pair in That's My Boy (2012), Andy Samberg is the new Adam Sandler in one more respect-they are such goofballs that their acting chops often go unnoticed.
Samberg is a revelation in Palm Springs in what is easily his career-best role. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine star alongside Cristin Milioti (The Mother from HIMYM) dazzle as a pair of cynical wedding guests stuck in a time loop.
Riding on the legendary coattails of Groundhog Day (1993), Director Max Barbakow still manages to surprise you with some amazing twists and dollops of laugh-out-loud moments, springing up at the places you least expect them to.
Oscar-winner JK Simmons is brilliant as usual in a role that has very little screen time but makes a powerful impact.
A perfect romantic comedy during these tough times. Highly recommended.
Having said that, this also is more in the R-rated territory. So while it has some nice moments, it also isn't afraid of pulling punches. This is really funny and the two leads give it their all. Even JK Simmons who's barely in it, is as grounded (no pun intended) as he always is. But it is about the chemistry of the two lead actors and it really translates more than well. Brooklyn 99 fans and/or Lonely Island fans don't need me to tell them this anyway. Yes he also did SNL, which seems ages away ... comedy is his thing, no doubt about it.
Lo sapevi?
- QuizSarah contacts a physicist named Clifford Johnson. This is the name of an actual scientist who worked on the movie, helping the filmmakers come up with an original premise for a time-loop story.
- BlooperThe goat experiment and the mid-credits scene are contradictory, since Sarah said the goat vanished completely from the time loop, but after Sarah and Nyles blow themselves up, Nyles reappears in Roy's time loop when Roy approaches him at the wedding.
- Citazioni
Sarah: You get one more sentence.
Nyles: Okay, okay, okay-
[Nyles thinks for a moment]
Nyles: Even though I pretend not to be, I've realized I'm completely codependent, but now I'm cool with it, because life is meant to be shared
[pause]
Nyles: - *semi-colon* - I need you for survival...
Sarah: That's your one sentence...
Nyles: [shouts] Wait!
[Sarah stops]
Nyles: ... I need you for survival, *comma*, but this is so much more than that
[pause]
Nyles: -*colon* - I know you better than anyone knows you, and that day we saw the dinosaurs, you said to really know a person you have to see their entire package, the good and the bad. Well, you've see mine, and I've seen yours, and you have an excellent package. *Ampersand* you're my favorite person I've ever met, and, yes, it seems like crazy odds that a person I'd meet stuck in a time loop would end up being my favorite person, but you know what else has crazy odds? Getting stuck in a fucking time loop. *Dot dot dot*...
Sarah: Ellipses.
Nyles: Yes, ellipses, thank you. *Ellipses*, I hope blowing ourselves up works, but if it doesn't, it's irrelevant for me, as long as I'm with you. And if it kills us... Well, Sarah Isabel Wilder, I'd rather die with you than live in this world without you, *emphatic period*.
