L'Impero Ottomano

Domande frequenti

If the episode about the life of Vlad III of Wallachia is any indication, yes. This series has it that Vlad reigned once, and the reinforcements he needed to retake Wallachia never came. Neither of these things are true.

Although details are lost to time, it is documented that Vlad reigned a total of three times, each reign lasting for less time than the previous. The second reign began with Vlad retaking Wallachia with a Hungarian army. Sources differ on the month, April, July, or August, but this took place in 1456.

Vlad's third reign is a little more tenuous. Matthias Corvinus recognised him as the lawful Prince of Wallachia, but not provide the necessary military support to reclaim it. Instead, he served as a commander in the armies that Corvinus used to fight the Ottomans in Bosnia.

Vlad was killed in late December 1476 or early January 1477. Multiple stories exist concerning what happened to his corpse, and even the placement of his head on a stake in Constantinople is highly questionable.

Also worth mentioning is that Vlad impaled people all of the time. During his first reign, he allegedly set a series of laws that prescribed impalement for nearly every crime imaginable. Although the Ottomans liked to embellish on the extent of his brutality, some reliable information available today indicates that the "forest of corpses" (as in a literal forest, not the little footpath) found by Mehmed II was not the first such forest that Vlad made. It is stated in some sources that a high-ranking Crusader with a reputation for brutality turned away from the West border of Wallachia because he found the sight of tens of thousands of corpses arranged in a pattern along said coast too much to bear.

And remember, these are just the clashes with authentic history in a singular episode.
