trouble in the trunk

Greetings again from the darkness. This is the first feature film for co-writers and co-directors Manuel Crosby and Darren Knapp. Despite mixed reactions from its Sundance Film Festival premiere, it's safe to say that this madcap action-comedy-romance-crime drama provides enough to set the stage for additional projects from the filmmakers. It likely works best as midnight fare, but the film juggles multiple genres and tonal shifts well enough that most will find it at least watchable, if not quite entertaining.

Tyson Brown (his first feature film) stars as Mike, a meek teenager too shy to ask his kickboxing neighbor Kelsey (Shelby Duclos, also her first feature film) on a date. When Mike's boisterous good friend Brett (Josh Fesler) forces his hand, Mike is surprised when Kelsey accepts ... setting off a wild chain of events and comedy of errors featuring a whole host of looney characters. But first, Mike has to find a car to drive, or there will be no picking up Kelsey at 7pm.

Mike buys a $300 1965 Chrysler from a shady dude named Dennis (Scott Noble). Now, Dennis is a natural scammer, but there is another reason Mike's newly purchased clunker is attracting the attention of drug dealers and corrupt cops. Mike and Kelsey's first date gets delayed a bit due to all the chaos, and Kelsey briefly ends up in the front seat of the Porsche belonging to local stud Chet (Brandon Kraus). Two local cops played by Nicole Berry and Samuel Adamola have multiple run-ins with Mike, each with terrific comic flair courtesy of Ms. Berry. Walking the line between comedy and danger is the crime gang who spend less time chasing Mike's car and more time on their book club - "Of Mice and Men" generating quite the debate. It's like a bumbling character convention came to town.

Filmmakers Crosby and Knapp deliver a frenzied opening scene to try and prepare us for what's coming. There are a few scenes that drag a bit, but for the most part, the pacing is pretty solid and the mixture of laughs and danger is well managed. Calling 8-tracks the vinyl of car radio is pure genius, and once things go awry, it's no-holds-barred. The big shootout reminds of FREE FIRE (2016), while the zaniness recalls such films as ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING (1987), AFTER HOURS (1985), and TRUE ROMANCE (1993).

The supporting cast includes Jesse Janzen, Ryan Quinn Adams, Jake Howard, and Samantha Laurenti, and Nicole Berry is quite the scene stealer as Police Sgt Davis. Tyson Brown is spot on as the deadpan Mike whose only talents seem to be misplacing his phone and staying alive, while Shelby Duclos leaves us wishing her Kelsey had significantly more screen time. We can debate whether it's best to get caught by drug dealers or corrupt cops, and the comedy of errors is sometimes less funny and more dangerous, but that pinch of teen romance keeps the film grounded and personal.

In theaters and On Demand beginning July 2, 2021.

5.5 - so "bad" it's good

It's definitely funny, and the combination of inept characters is spectacularly entertaining. Sometimes felt a bit overkill or some scenes felt a little random but it was an endearing kind of bad that made it enjoyable and funny. The beginning with Mike was rather slow,I can't say I didn't "wtf" a bunch of times or enjoy every second, but I really appreciate that it keeps the audience on their toes for the most part and it does comedic scenes well. And hey - it made it to Sundance which is a fantastic feat within itself so I don't say anything negative to rain on that parade. It's definitely worth a watch and will (of course) be some peoples cup of tea more than others, but you'll be hard pressed to get through the entire film without laughing :)

Loud

This had the makings of a good movie, but fell short somehow. There were a lot of characters, none of them really good, even the protagonist Mike and his "date".

Anyway they all came together at the end and the baddies and corrupt cops were seen off in a decent enough manner. There were some amusing moments, but, I don't know. They all spent a lot of time yelling at each other about crap-all, I found it immensely annoying and not in the least humorous.

Then there was a lot of loud gunfire that just went on forever. It's not something I would watch again, it was almost a relief when it was over .

Dialogue Not as Important as Studios Making Money

DVD lacked subtitles for the elderly, disabled, hearing impaired, and ESL viewers. Disrespectful & cheap on the part of the producers especially when audio & enunciation is poor.

Storyline: Young man buys car to impress girl next door. Car has history (drugs) thus lots of people (baddies) want it.

Positives: Acting better than the script; entertainingly implausible chase scenarios & shootouts.

Fun and Funny

It's no blockbuster, but it is a fun movie to unwind with. Not a whole lot of concentration needed. I liked it for what it is.

Seriously???

Any positive review of this crap has to come from the filmakers, actors or friends of both. What a complete joke Who are the people in this cast???

They obviously have little or no acting experience whatsoever...and it shows.

Funny, violent, and entertaining.

FIRST DATE is a movie that impressively walks the fine line between laugh out loud coming of age comedy, and anxiety inducing thriller. A small town full of oddball characters cause a teenage date night to go horribly awry: ruthless, crooked cops, a vicious drug ring (with a book club), and a crazed, trigger happy woman all cross paths with hilarious and violent results. A comical, double crossing, trust-no-one, crime spree mystery with a charasmatic lead (keep an eye on Tyson Brown, he could be a star). The action keeps the 2 young lovebirds apart for most of the film, and their strong chemistry makes you cheer for them to get together. Perhaps it feels a touch too long, but FIRST DATE is funny, sweet, erratic, and violent. Lively entertainment from start to finish.

Fun & well worth watching

Fun. So worth watching.

Of course you know a first date in a movie called First Date isn't going to go exxxxxactly as planned right? But it goes beyond hijinx and defies expectations.

This combines aspects of several genres so you don't have to be super into this "type" of movie and still have a great time. It's solid, unexpected writing for a quirky indy. For whatever small budget they had to do this it's well executed, directed, etc. Good actors we're surely going to see in other things soon.

Will you have a good time watching this film? Yes.

I stopped and started over

I generally turn on a flick to have on for "bg noise" while working and editing, but by the time I was 10 minute in I had to stop the work, restart the movie and get my fiancé to come to watch with me. I like films where I can't tell where it is going next, and this film delivered the expectation of expectation. I watched it a second time with my family just because it was full of action and laughs. I think it is a great film and I can't wait to see what it is next from this artist.

You won't regret giving this film your time!

I really loved First Date. It was fun, different and had a lot of quick unexpected turns. All things I love to see in an indie film. It got the comedy right and keeps you guessing "what's going to happen next?" Some great acting performances too. The director(s) really set the tone and the cast of quirky characters all find there place to shine in this well executed dark comedy.

I saw this at the at the Jim Thorpe Independent Film Festival which typically slates a lot of great selections and First Date really stood out as exceptional.

Recommend for fans of Pineapple Express, The Big Lebowski, and Game Night

"First Date" is an ambitious thriller-comedy-action-romance independent movie, with quirky characters and several excellent action-driven set-pieces. Its themes are subtle, and there is substance underneath all of its flashy style; but it is not heavy-handed, and it is definitely entertaining. I was glued to the screen up to the end credits, not knowing where it will go next, or how it will end! I found the movie to be like an indie homage to wild action-comedies like Pineapple Express and Game Night, though it also has the quirky world and characters of a movie like The Big Lebowski. Being that it tackles so many different genres, some may take issue with the movie's mercurial tone... but in the end it is still a thrilling, entertaining movie. Watching it was a real rollercoaster of a ride, so if you're looking for a thrilling experience, check out this movie!

Low Budget, Big Script

The writing and directing remind me of Kevin Smith and Clerks, in that this is the first big film that is coming from a great talent with very little to work with. I have no doubt that the people involved with this project will get another, much larger, round of funding for their next piece, and that this will remain a solid classic for years to come. As with most comedies, I'm expecting my second watch to contain more laughs, but the first run through didn't disappoint. While there are the typical "faux pas" that come from low budget comedy acting, there are many great characters and moments that make this excellent little story shine.

Finally, an indie-film to celebrate!

"First Date", I am particularly fond of this film! It leaves a long lasting impression with some remarkable scenes and relatable characters. Its easy to get involved in the story as the plot unfolds and the action heats up. I really enjoyed the dialogue in the film and the genuine laughs. For an independent film, there are some scenes that truly shine with brilliance.

Unironically a good date night movie

"First Date" is a deceptively fun movie that is a fresh take on the coming-of-age teen rom-coms genre. Main character Mike is swept along by his hilarious best friend Brent into buying a used car for his titular first date with love interest Kelsey. This spirals into a cartoonish and funny story involving cop chases, drug smuggling, and gratuitous violence that perfectly blends parody with suspense and action . Each member of the primary cast plays their character extremely well, with each one's performance respecting the audience's time by effectively fleshing out their personalities and relevance to the overall plot. The antagonists are far from your typical moustache-twirling, blank slate criminal; in fact they felt much more colorful and comically grounded than the main character, playing into the satirical tone the writers were aiming for. Overall, this is definitely a movie worth watching, impressively so considering this was an independently produced movie, and if not for anything else, for the sake of watching it for Brent and his amazing dialogue.

Just so frickin fun.

I smiled through the entirety of this film. A constant goal and tension, every character feels imperfect and humanly off, and a very competent, cinematic production. The plot doesn't unfold how I expected and I have to give my admiration for that.

I watched the movie without any information. I thought it was a light comedy, but as time went on, I fell in love with it, and I think it's a very well made movie.
