Netflix’s ‘Katrina: Come Hell and High Water’ marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and brings together the voices of survivors, first responders, and community leaders who lived through one of America’s most devastating natural disasters. The documentary reflects on the storm’s lasting impact, systemic failures, and stories of resilience. Among those interviewed is Gralen Banks, who lost his home in the catastrophic flooding but chose to stay and rebuild in New Orleans. His story embodies determination and the enduring spirit of those who refused to abandon their city.

Glass ceiling-shattering Emmy winner Lena Waithe’s love letter to her hometown, The Chi, became premium cable’s longest-running Black drama earlier this summer. Surpassing Soul Food (the notable Showtime series that ran from 2000 until 2004), the ninth episode of The Chi‘s seventh season, titled “Last Respects,” dug beyond the gangbanging, murder capital narrative often favored by mainstream media. Instead of running away from or ignoring the city’s gritty reality, the series also showed the trials and tribulations that many everyday people face in such a challenging environment, or just in life.
That ordinariness is what Waithe, who rose to prominence as both a writer and star of the Netflix series Master of None, emphasizes to The Hollywood Reporter. “It struck a nerve, because everybody knows a character in the show,” she says of The Chi’s core fanbase. “I hear from a lot of young guys that they really relate to Emmett.

Can you believe it’s been 16 Years since the last official installment in the Friday the 13th franchise? That would of course be Marcus Nispel’s Friday the 13th back in 2009, which forever immortalized Derek Mears as of the rare few to portray horror icon Jason Voorhees on screen. Nearly twenty years later, Jason is returning to the screen in Sweet Revenge.
Described as a “vignette,” the short-form project is a 13-minute experience that’s headed our way next week from the newly-formed Jason Universe, a relaunch of the Jason Voorhees character from the rights holders. It’s no secret that the franchise has been mired in legal troubles for years now, but the Jason Universe finally allows for the big guy’s official return.
That makes Sweet Revenge the first official Jason Voorhees film project in sixteen years, and Bloody Disgusting has exclusively uncovered the man behind the mask this week.

One look at Jodie Turner-Smith in her Tron: Ares light suit makes it clear: you absolutely would not mess with her. The Queen & Slim star – recently seen in The Acolyte – looks undeniably formidable in her guise for Joachim Rønning’s long-awaited blockbuster, taking audiences back to the world of Tron for the first time since 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Meet Athena, second-in-command to Jared Leto’s Ares, ready to bust out of the Grid and take charge.
“She is hardcore and fierce and strong and loyal,” Turner-Smith tells Empire in our world-exclusive Tron: Ares issue. During our set visit, she walks up in a real light-up suit, with close-cropped bleach-blonde hair and eyebrow-free face – the severity of the look absolutely speaking to Athena’s role. “It’s really fun to play somebody who’s just totally uncompromising and brazenly going about accomplishing their objectives. Oof. Beginnings of months are difficult in terms of how many titles on any streaming service we are forced to say goodbye to. Each month, Netflix brings in many new items, meaning some older ones have to leave. Some months are worse than others.
May isn't worse than other months unless you are a fan of a couple of franchises. If you love Spider-Man, we have bad news for you. If you are addicted to watching Thomas & Friends, we have more bad news.
Perhaps the worst part is that a lot of comedies are saying goodbye. Wedding Crashers, the Fockers films, and a couple of the Friday flicks are going away. So are some Oscar-worthy films, such as Schindler's List and Whiplash.
A large number of titles are leaving Netflix this week (April 26 through May 2)
The weird 1978 version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is also leaving.

If you were planning on discounting the upcoming "Barney" movie entirely, you might want to think again — because Ayo Edebiri has been tapped to write the script.
Mattel Films and A24 are teaming up for a "Barney" movie, and not only will Edebiri write it but, according to the official press release announcing the news, she may also star in the film as well. (Specifics on Edebiri's potential role aren't clear as of this writing.) Meanwhile, the movie is being produced by another industry powerhouse in the form of Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya, whose company 59% Productions is behind the project.
This is definitely an encouraging and, frankly, bizarre update (in a good way) when it comes to the "Barney" movie. So, what else do we know?
Well, in 2023, Kevin McKeon, a Mattel executive, revealed that the movie about the beloved purple dinosaur will be a lot weirder (and cooler?) than you probably expected.

Netflix has revealed its lineup for February 2025.
Reality TV enthusiasts are in for a treat. Netflix is putting a strong focus on this genre with the return of Love Is Blind for its eighth season, along with the debut of Celebrity Bear Hunt, a fresh competition-based reality show. For those who prefer a gripping thriller, Netflix will drop Apple Cider Vinegar, a new series premiering on February 6 that’s worth keeping an eye on.
In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. While it’s bittersweet for fans, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Daniel Larusso, as he’s set to appear in an upcoming Karate Kid movie hitting theaters later this year.
Beyond these highlights, Netflix is also adding plenty of films and shows to its catalog.

Bonnie and Clyde, Thelma & Louise, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid — joining these cultural touchstones for their ability to encapsulate the zeitgeist of their times is Melina Matsoukas’ 2019 crime drama Queen & Slim. These fugitive films have pulse-pounding thrills that captivate audiences with intimate explorations of love, rebellion, and survival. Queen & Slim is a rant at systemic racism and police brutality while paying tribute to its predecessors. Starring Daniel Kaluuya in a familiar, similarly themed role as his Oscar-nominated performance portraying Chris Washington in Jordan Peele's horror Get Out and Jodie Turner-Smith in her breakout feature-leading role, the film is unapologetically an ode to the Black community's experience. It's a tense, provocative, gripping crime drama that explores how two ordinary people transform into national symbols of defiance.

Pure Fiction: The Black List Offers New Novelists A New Avenue To Publication, TV & Film Adaptations
Over three months before the 20th edition of The Black List hits inboxes all over town, the Franklin Leonard founded platform is broadening its horizon into novels.

Summer’s almost over, which means the start of the traditional TV season. And while the ongoing Hollywood double strike delayed production for scripted originals across the industry, there’s still an avalanche of new and returning shows coming to broadcast, cable and streaming services this fall.
While we’ll have to wait longer for the return of broadcast staples like the “One Chicago” franchise, “Young Sheldon” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” networks are planning to lean on banked originals (like NBC’s “Found” and “The Irrational”), unscripted staples like NBC’s “The Voice” (with new judge Reba McEntire) and “Dancing With the Stars” returning to ABC, international acquisitions (“Sullivan’s Crossing” on The CW) and even borrowing buzzworthy shows from sibling cable networks (“Yellowstone” airing on CBS). Programming on cable and streaming services has not been as impacted by the production stoppage yet, with plenty of comedy (Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot), drama...

A version of this story about Lena Waithe and “Being Mary Tyler Moore” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
You’d expect people like James L. Brooks and Rob Reiner to be involved in a documentary about actress and producer Mary Tyler Moore, a TV pioneer who died in 2017 at the age of 80 — and they are part of the HBO documentary “Being Mary Tyler Moore.” But so are Lena Waithe, the Emmy-winning writer, producer and actress whose work includes the TV series “The Chi” and “Master of None” and the films “Queen & Slim” and “The Forty-Year-Old Version,” and Rishi Rajani, the CEO of Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions.
Neither of them was born when “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” went off the air in 1977, and Rajani knew virtually nothing of Moore when Waithe signed on to produce the documentary,...

People disappear, witches are real and there are portals that have never been traveled through before in Apple TV+’s “The Changeling,” a new drama series starring Lakeith Stanfield based on the book by Victor Lavalle.
What starts off as a “boy meets girl” story ends up playing out as a terrifying nightmare. A little over 30 seconds into the trailer, Clarke Backo’s character Emma meets what appears to be a witch next a body of water in Brazil.
“She told me I had three wishes,” Emma said “When it falls off my wrist, those three wishes will come true. Do not cut it.”
But for Apollo Kagway, Lakeith Stanfield’s character, wishes and witches are only found in fairytales.
“Emma, with me…all three of your wishes will come true,” Apollo said before snapping off the red string from Emma’s wrist.
“Would you even know if you crossed into a fairytale?...

The promotion of Donna Langley, the head of the Universal film studio, to chief content officer overseeing all of NBCUniversal’s entertainment divisions, is Comcast President Mike Cavanagh’s first big decision in his tenure running the media business directly. It’s a savvy move to advance a quietly accomplished leader while other major studios are struggling, many insiders told TheWrap.
“In a time when these studios are a mess, it’s a safe move,” a producer told TheWrap about promoting Langley, referring to the box office woes and internal challenges at rivals like Bob Iger’s Walt Disney Company and David Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Discovery.
“It seemed inevitable,” one top talent agent told TheWrap. “There were rumors for a while that she wanted more responsibility and to move further up the Comcast hierarchy.”
True or not, Langley’s tenure has been marked by a lack of public drama...
