Glass ceiling-shattering Emmy winner Lena Waithe’s love letter to her hometown, The Chi, became premium cable’s longest-running Black drama earlier this summer. Surpassing Soul Food (the notable Showtime series that ran from 2000 until 2004), the ninth episode of The Chi‘s seventh season, titled “Last Respects,” dug beyond the gangbanging, murder capital narrative often favored by mainstream media. Instead of running away from or ignoring the city’s gritty reality, the series also showed the trials and tribulations that many everyday people face in such a challenging environment, or just in life.

That ordinariness is what Waithe, who rose to prominence as both a writer and star of the Netflix series Master of None, emphasizes to The Hollywood Reporter. “It struck a nerve, because everybody knows a character in the show,” she says of The Chi’s core fanbase. “I hear from a lot of young guys that they really relate to Emmett.

Can you believe it’s been 16 Years since the last official installment in the Friday the 13th franchise? That would of course be Marcus Nispel’s Friday the 13th back in 2009, which forever immortalized Derek Mears as of the rare few to portray horror icon Jason Voorhees on screen. Nearly twenty years later, Jason is returning to the screen in Sweet Revenge.

Described as a “vignette,” the short-form project is a 13-minute experience that’s headed our way next week from the newly-formed Jason Universe, a relaunch of the Jason Voorhees character from the rights holders. It’s no secret that the franchise has been mired in legal troubles for years now, but the Jason Universe finally allows for the big guy’s official return.

That makes Sweet Revenge the first official Jason Voorhees film project in sixteen years, and Bloody Disgusting has exclusively uncovered the man behind the mask this week.

Stressed that it’s somehow already August? You’re not alone. But you can still ignore that stress, at least a little, with a good movie night. And there are a lot of options for you on Tubi this month.

Holt has been the face of the network’s flagship broadcast since he took over the job from Brian Williams back in 2015.

In an emotional announcement, Holt revealed in February that he would be stepping down following a historic run.

Perhaps the worst part is that a lot of comedies are saying goodbye. Wedding Crashers, the Fockers films, and a couple of the Friday flicks are going away. So are some Oscar-worthy films, such as Schindler's List and Whiplash.

“Government Cheese” has officially landed on Apple TV+, and it features a star-studded cast alongside its lead, David Oyelowo.

The series hails from creators Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr and boasts “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” star David Oyelowo, who also executive produces the series. It follows the series of quirky adventures a newly-released prisoner named Hampton Chambers gets into as he embarks on a mission to reinvent himself and reconnect with his family.

The show is based on an original short film by Hunter, which he and Oyelowo took to MacRo and Apple Studios.

Exclusive: In a rare acting gig on a show she has not created or executive produced, Emmy winner Lena Waithe is set for a guest arc on ABC’s venerable medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. She will play Dr. Evynn Moore, a brilliant and savvy former student of Catherine Fox’s (Debbie Allen) who visits Grey Sloan to help her on a unique case which happens to be for her wife, played by Andrea Bordeaux. Currently booked for two episodes, Waithe will first appear in Episode 2110, “Jump (for My Love),” which premieres March 13. In it, Meredith and Nick return to Grey Sloan to treat a liver transplant patient. Meanwhile, Bailey hosts an intern retreat at her home and Winston and Ben aid an unexpected crash victim.

If you were planning on discounting the upcoming "Barney" movie entirely, you might want to think again — because Ayo Edebiri has been tapped to write the script.

Mattel Films and A24 are teaming up for a "Barney" movie, and not only will Edebiri write it but, according to the official press release announcing the news, she may also star in the film as well. (Specifics on Edebiri's potential role aren't clear as of this writing.) Meanwhile, the movie is being produced by another industry powerhouse in the form of Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya, whose company 59% Productions is behind the project.

On Feb. 5, Amy Schumer’s comedy Kinda Pregnant debuts on Netflix. Netflix has revealed its lineup for February 2025.

Reality TV enthusiasts are in for a treat. Netflix is putting a strong focus on this genre with the return of Love Is Blind for its eighth season, along with the debut of Celebrity Bear Hunt, a fresh competition-based reality show. For those who prefer a gripping thriller, Netflix will drop Apple Cider Vinegar, a new series premiering on February 6 that’s worth keeping an eye on.

In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. While it’s bittersweet for fans, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Daniel Larusso, as he’s set to appear in an upcoming Karate Kid movie hitting theaters later this year.

Beyond these highlights, Netflix is also adding plenty of films and shows to its catalog.

Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker Kevin Costner will receive the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (Mpse) Filmmaker Award, while supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath will receive the Career Achievement Award from the organization.

Both awards will be presented at Mpse’s 72nd Annual Golden Reel Awards Gala on Feb. 23 at the Ebell Theater in Los Angeles.

Jodie Turner-Smith has joined the cast of the upcoming espionage series “The Agency” at Paramount+ With Showtime.

She will star in the series, which is based on the French series “Le Bureau des Legendes,” alongside previously announced cast members Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere.

“Jodie Turner-Smith is a force who captivates audiences with her raw, emotional power,” said Nina L. Diaz, president of content and chief creative officer for Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios & Paramount Media Networks. “We are thrilled she is joining our extraordinary cast alongside Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere.”

Per the official description, the series “follows Martian (Fassbender), a covert CIA agent, ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.

Devonté Hynes — A.K.A. Blood Orange — will be making his Broadway debut later this year as a member of the creative team for Job, a new play being mounted at the Hayes Theater in New York.

Hynes will compose new music for the play, which was written by Max Wolf Friedlich and originally premiered Off-Broadway last year at SoHo Repertory. Original cast members Peter Friedman and Syndey Lemmon are confirmed to star in the Broadway production. Job begins with preview performances on July 15th and opens formally on July 30th, with a tentative close date on September 29th.

The Directing Workshop for Women Program helps to educates traditionally underrepresented filmmakers through the production cycle of a short film, providing hands-on instruction led by industry experts. Launched in 1974, the tuition-free program provides women with the opportunity to further their careers in the entertainment industry.

Leaning into to two decades of shining a spotlight on Tinseltown’s most liked unproduced screenplays, the Franklin Leonard-founded Black List has teamed up with American Cinematheque for a screening series to kick off next month. Going into the Black List crates, a heavy hitting double bill of Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn and Promising Young Woman and Ava DuVernay’s January 19 released Origin and her 2014 picture Selma are the first films in the series.

Hollywood’s annual round-up of most popular screenplays yet to be produced has been topped by Travis Braun’s Bad Boy.

The Black List is compiled from the suggestions of more than 375 film executives, each contributing the names of up to 10 favourite feature film screenplays that were written in, or associated with, 2023, and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.

It was founded by Franklin Leonard in 2005.

This year, scripts had to receive at least seven nominations to be included.

Apple TV+’s adaptation of Victor Lavelle’s bestselling book “The Changeling” is debuts on the streamer this Friday. The eight-part drama, which Stanfield stars in and executive produces, will drop the first three episodes of the series on Friday, Sept. 8. The pilot episode was directed by “Queen & Slim” director Melina Matsoukas.

Based on the acclaimed best-selling book of the same name by Victor Lavalle, ‘The Changeling’ is a fairytale for grown-ups. A horror story, a parenthood fable and a perilous odyssey through a New York City you didn’t know existed. In addition to Stanfield, the series stars Clark Backo, Adina Porter, Samuel T. Herring, Alexis Louder, Jared Abrahamson, and special guest star Malcolm Barrett.

The show is written and adapted by showrunner and executive producer Kelly Marcel. The pilot episode was directed by Melina Matsoukas.

What starts off as a “boy meets girl” story ends up playing out as a terrifying nightmare. A little over 30 seconds into the trailer, Clarke Backo’s character Emma meets what appears to be a witch next a body of water in Brazil.

“She told me I had three wishes,” Emma said “When it falls off my wrist, those three wishes will come true. Do not cut it.”

But for Apollo Kagway, Lakeith Stanfield’s character, wishes and witches are only found in fairytales.

“Emma, with me…all three of your wishes will come true,” Apollo said before snapping off the red string from Emma’s wrist.
