A friend and I attended this, coasting on Sondheim's genius reputation, and his legitimately great and original Sweeney Todd.
Sunday in the Park, is misshapen and misconceived. The latter George is a crummy character with a crummy dilemma. Some of the songs are obvious (Finishing the Hat) or aggravating (The Chrome-illume nonsense).
Stories about artists are just overflowing with cliches (The Goya movie, the Klimt movie, the Van Gogh movie, the Toulouse Lautrec movie, and this). SITPWG feels endless, and the script is pointless. It is part of a trifecta of awful, lesser titles from Sondheim (Into the Woods, and Assassins) that were awarded with fan adulation; but which have barely a fraction of the hook of Sweeney Todd.
