The spookiest season of the year is fast-approaching, and you know what that means. The box office will get much scarier as studios treat audiences to jump scares, demented family members, and things that go bump in the night. The onset of Autumn also marks the back-to-school rush, with financial priority changes, wardrobe updates, and photos of kids offering up too much personal information on their parents’ social media. Interestingly, the beginning of this season kicks off with an ending, thanks to The Conjuring: Last Rites, which stands to claim the top spot at the box office.

“Conjuring: The Last Rites” should bring the box office back to life.
The latest entry in Warner Bros. and New Line’s supernatural horror franchise is aiming for $50 million or more in its opening weekend. The studio is cautiously predicting a $35 million start while independent tracking services believe the final number could be above $55 million.
Internationally, “Conjuring: The Last Rites” is aiming for another $50 million from 66 territories for a global launch that could be above the $100 million mark.
Those ticket sales would be a huge boon to movie theater owners after the all-important summer stretch ended on a downtrodden note. Popcorn season officially ended with domestic revenues at $3.67 billion, down 0.2% from 2024 and 10.2% from 2023, according to Comscore. Although the lineup looked strong on paper, the crop of comic book adventures and action sequels wasn’t enough to push ticket sales to $4 billion as expected.

Warner Bros. continues its ownership of the post-Labor Day frame with this weekend’s New Line/Safran Company/Atomic Monster supposed finale, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is eyeing $40M+ domestic and $80M+ worldwide.
The opening here is bound to rep a return to form for the Conjuring franchise at the box office; the previous sequel, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, was a theatrical day-and-date release in post-pandemic 2021 on HBO Max and in theaters, and posted a siphoned opening of $24.1M domestic, finishing with $65.6M stateside and $206M worldwide take.
After a summer that came in even at $3.67 billion in North America, the industry is bracing for a slowdown this month vs. last year, which saw Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice post the second-best start for September at $111M domestic — this after the studio’s all-time opening record was set by Stephen King’s It back in 2017, which bowed to $123.4M.

Broadway box office was mostly in a holding pattern last week as the industry gears up for a busy fall season, but some shows broke from the pack to do very well indeed for the late-summer dog days.
Purpose, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ brilliant exploration of the turmoil within the family of an iconic Civil Rights leader (directed by Phylicia Rashad), closed out its run at the Hayes Theatre, taking $1,020,309 and breaking the house record of $950,927 set by the playwright’s Appropriate for the week ending March 3, 2024.
As Purpose left the stage, Art was arriving. The revival of Yasmina Reza’s acclaimed play, starring Bobby Cannavale, James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris, sold out its first three previews at the Music Box for a gross of $668,504. Average ticket price was an impressive $223.06. Opening night is September 16.

Aura Entertainment has acquired “Satisfied,” a documentary that follows “Hamilton” star Renée Elise Goldsberry.
In the film, which draws its title from the hit “Hamilton” song of the same name, Goldsberry’s vlogs capture how she secured the role of Angelica Schuyler in what would become the 2015 Broadway phenomenon “Hamilton,” while also enduring fertility issues and trying to mother her two young children.
Directed by filmmakers Chris Bolan (“A Secret Love”) and Melissa Haizlip (“Mr. Soul!”), “Satisfied” premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. Somewhat surprisingly, given the doc’s celebrity nature and the never-before-seen footage of the making of the Broadway juggernaut “Hamilton,” the major streamers didn’t buy film. A House of Dynamite is a Kathryn Bigelow-directed Netflix film, coming to the streamer on October 24, 2025. The film is poised to be an explosive (literally) action thriller. It will also be Bigelow’s first film for the streamer since Aurora was scrapped.
The official logline for the film reads (via Tudum):
When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.
Government officials must get to work and identify the culprit before the United States is hit with an even bigger threat. We can expect ample political tensions, high stakes, special operatives, and warring nations in the upcoming film.

Gypsy soared to $1.6 million last week as the revival finished its Broadway run.
The musical, starring Audra McDonald, played to 94 percent capacity at the Majestic Theatre and brought in an average ticket price of $134.58. The show, which opened in December, but announced an early closing Aug. 17, has not seen those ticket prices and box office tally since the winter. The $1.607 million tally made the show the fourth highest grossing show in the industry last week.
Mamma Mia! opened at the Winter Garden Theatre Aug. 14, and brought in $1.606 million across its first eight-show week (which also included the comped opening and comped tickets for press preview performances). Hamilton was the highest grossing show last week, unseating long-standing top earner Wicked, with $2.2 million. Wicked was the second highest grossing show last week with $2 million and The Lion King followed with $1.9 million.

Mamma Mia!...
The limited six-month engagement of the Abba musical marks the return of one of Broadway’s longest-running shows. The original 2001 production played for a record-breaking 14 years and 5,773 performances at the Winter Garden and then at the Broadhurst Theatre.
You know the story: “On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they had last visited decades ago.” The Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus score includes “Dancing Queen,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Money, Money, Money,” and “Take a Chance on Me.”
Opening night is Thursday, August 14. The engagement runs through February 1, 2026.
