Colombian ‘Narcos’ Producer Dynamo Hires Angélica Guerra to Drive International Growth (Exclusive)

Angélica Guerra, a former top executive at Apple, Sony, Colombian free-to-air network Caracol Televisión and Telemundo, has joined Dynamo, the Colombian production company and production services firm that has worked on the likes of hit crime drama Narcos and One Hundred Years of Solitude, as a partner and chief strategy officer. She will also lead two newly launched business units called Franchises and Unscripted.

The hire underlines Dynamo’s ambition for international growth. With it, the company said it “is poised to accelerate its global ambitions, innovate across genres, and further solidify its position as a leader in premium content production.”

With offices in Bogota, Mexico, New York, and Madrid, Dynamo, founded in 2006, has so far developed and produced 26 series and 49 feature films for the likes of Netflix (Narcos, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Wild District etc), Amazon (Falco, Medellin, The Head of Joaquin Murrieta etc), and Starzplay (Malayerba). Australia’s Safe Harbour named best TV movie/mini-series.

UK crime thriller McMafia was named best drama series at the 47th International Emmy Awards ceremony in New York on Monday (25) evening.

Australia’s Safe Harbour won the best TV movie/mini-series award and programmes from Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Turkey and the Us were among winners of another nine Emmys presented during the ceremony staged by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

U.K. series “McMafia” earned the International Emmy Award for drama at the 47th annual ceremony recognizing programs from outside the U.S.

BBC’s “McMafia,” which also aired on AMC, was the final winner tonight at the Hilton New York where the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ kudos were handed out at a dinner gala hosted by “Daily Show” correspondent Ronny Chieng.

Australia’s “Safe Harbour” won for movie/miniseries. The thriller about a disturbing trip to Indonesia for a group of friends from Brisbane beat out nominees from Brazil, India and Hungary. Matchbox Pictures’ produced the series for Australia’s Sbs. “Safe Harbour” was picked in the U.S. by Hulu.

The comedy prize went to Netflix’s Brazilian program “Especial de Natal Porta dos Fundos (The Last Hangover),” a Biblical spoof starring popular comedian Fábio Porchat.

Haluk Bilginer of Turkey’s “Şahsiyet (Persona)” won for best performance by an actor.

A supporting actress Oscar nominee for playing Alfonso Cuaron’s fictional mother in “Roma,” Marina de Tavira has played pivotal roles in Mexican adaptations of plays by Bertolt Brecht, Harold Pinter and David Mamet, appeared in TV series such as Amazon’s “Falco,” and films including Hari Sama’s Sundance entry, “This Is Not Berlin.”

How do you feel about your Oscar nomination?

It was such a huge surprise. I was expecting “Roma” to get nominations in various categories, but I wasn’t expecting a supporting actress nomination. I never imagined I would reach this point in my life.

Where did you get your inspiration for your character?

Firstly, Alfonso’s memories of his mother, then my own memories of my mother. I grew up in the mid-to-late ’70s, early ’80s. The character Sofia in “Roma” represents a whole generation of women who were in the same situation during that time,...

‘Roma’ Star Marina De Tavira Signs With UTA (Exclusive)
UTA has signed Mexican actress Marina De Tavira in all areas.

Most recently, she starred in Alfonso Cuaron’s critically acclaimed movie “Roma,” playing the mother Sofia. “Roma,” which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was named best film by the New York Film Critics Circle, was recently nominated for a handful of Golden Globes, including best director and best foreign film. Up next, De Tavira will appear in the drama “This Is Not Berlin,” set to debut next year.

Additionally, her previous film credits include “Ana y Bruno,” “Ilusiones S.A.,” and “Espacio Interior.” On the television side, she has appeared in Amazon Prime’s “Falco,” Netflix’s “Ingobernable,” and Telemundo’s “El Senor de los Cielos,” among other titles.

Variety Announces Actors to Watch for 2018
Variety is pleased to announce its annual list of 10 Actors to Watch, an honor the publication has bestowed since 1998.

Past honorees include many future Oscar winners and nominees, such as Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Brie Larson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Melissa Leo.

This year’s honorees will be feted in the Nov. 6 issue of Variety, as well as at a reception Nov. 11 at the Resort at Pelican Hill in conjunction with Visit Newport Beach and the Newport Beach Film Festival. In addition to the 10 Actors to Watch, the Newport Beach Film Festival will also bestow industry honors.
