You need a good reason to exhume a dead body. Even in capital murder cases, the United States requires both criminal prosecutors and defense counsel to meet a rigorous legal standard when petitioning to disturb a mausoleum or grave.

That same expectation doesn’t apply in Hollywood, where the true crime ecosystem continues to needlessly zombify old cases. This fall, TV audiences seem headed for a particularly macabre display when Netflix’s “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” (October 4) debuts the same month as Peacock’s “Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy” (October 16).

Gein and Gacy — two of the most notorious American serial killers of the 20th century — are remembered for crimes so heinous they already reverberate throughout pop culture. But modern IP laws treat these monolithic boogeymen almost like public property, doing more to protect fictional characters like Mickey Mouse from abuse than the real people who were impacted by these crimes.

Charlie Hunnam‘s Monster: The Ed Gein Story recently revealed its first look, featuring the Sons of Anarchy star as Ed Gein (via Netflix/Instagram). The upcoming season of the Ryan Murphy co-created series Monster will explore the life and times of the titular suspected serial killer in 1950s rural Wisconsin.

While fans await the new season, they will be surprised to learn that Gein and his notorious crime spree served as an inspiration for several iconic horror movies. As a result, fans can check out these Ed Gein-inspired horror projects before Monster season 3 drops on October 3, 2025, on Netflix. Without further ado, here are the best and most iconic movies inspired by Ed Gein.

One of the best horror movies of the 2000s is returning to theaters for its 20th anniversary. Rob Zombie's gritty horror triumph of 2005, The Devil's Rejects, will shock modern audiences as it's set for a re-release, courtesy of Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment. The film will be screened in stunning 4K during a two-night event on October 6 and 8, 2025.

Though it holds a 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes today, The Devil's Rejects was well-received by critics back in the day. Famed critic Roger Ebert, who wasn't horror's biggest fan, gave the film three stars out of four, and said the following in his review: "Ok, now, listen up, people. I don't want to get any e-mail messages from readers complaining that I gave the movie three stars, and so they went to it expecting to have a good time, and it was the sickest and most disgusting movie they've ever seen."

Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley are both bona fide slasher superstars, and will star together in Brian McQuery's latest horror project, Covet. Hodder portrayed Jason Voorhees across four Friday the 13th films, and Moseley played Otis B. Driftwood in The Devil's Rejects.

Per Variety, the two horror legends will appear in McQuery's sophomore effort, with his first film having been last year's Plea, starring Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp. The official synopsis for Covet reads, “When a sleazy car salesman is framed for the murder of his mistress, he must prove his innocence — only to learn the forces responsible may not be human.”

Saban Films has secured the North American distribution rights to the sci-fi revenge thriller Redux Redux, written and directed by Kevin McManus and Matthew McManus. The film, which debuted in the Midnighter section at SXSW earlier this year, is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release later in 2025.

Redux Redux follows Irene Kelly, played by Michaela McManus, as she travels across parallel universes seeking revenge for her daughter’s death by repeatedly killing the murderer in each world. But as Irene becomes consumed by the hunt, her grip on her own humanity begins to fray.

The project features a cast that includes Jim Cummings, Jeremy Holm, Taylor Misiak, Grace Van Dien, and newcomer Stella Marcus. The concept of the movie cameo no longer means what it used to. Nowadays, we have entire feature films serving as a cameo delivery system, where "cameos" aren't brief appearances by very recognizable figures, but are actually entire supporting roles. Thanks to the comic book movie and the output of Marvel Studios in particular, the cameo has since become far more than the Easter egg it used to be. In a cinematic landscape where what we now call cameos can range from teaser appearances of characters to be seen in a future film to big-name actors who were merely kept out of the marketing materials, is there any room for the classic-style cameo anymore?

Fortunately for us horror nerds, along comes "Terrifier 3" to answer that question with a resounding "Yes." The latest installment in the Art the Clown saga includes all manner of cameo appearances, ranging from some actors...

One, two, Pinocchio's coming for you. No, wait. Thats not right. Its one, two, Freddys coming for you, the nursery rhyme made famous in A Nightmare on Elm Street, which just so happened to feature Robert Englund, who has been announced alongside Richard Brake to star in Pinocchio: Unstrung. See, its all connected. Set for release in 2025, the movie is another entry in The Twisted Childhood Universe (dubbed the Poohniverse) created by Rhys Frake-Waterfield that follows in the footsteps of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, and its recent sequel.

Per Variety, horror legends Englund and Blake have been cast in the new flick, for which production is already underway. Blake will star as Geppetto, while Englund is said to be taking on the role of Cricket, who was appointed by the Blue Fairy in the original Disney movie to help guide Pinnochio on his journey as he becomes a real boy.

The Retaliators director Samuel Gonzalez Jr. returns to the director’s chair for the indie Stiletto starring Charlotte McKinney.

In the upcoming exotic horror movie, “A year after the grisly murder of a local exotic dancer, the victim’s sister, Lyric (Gigi Gustin), searches for the serial killer responsible as he stalks and kills his favorite dancers on the night of the anniversary.”

If you’ve heard anything at all about the film Abruptio, it’s most likely been positive, and you’ve probably wondered why you can’t find it in a theater or streaming. All of that is changing, which is a very good thing if you’re a fan of unique horror movies.

Released in 2023, Abruptio played at 37 international festivals, winning 21 awards along the way. I was lucky enough to receive a screener at that time, and I absolutely loved it. But, don’t take just my word for it. My colleague Brian Fanelli recently had the opportunity to watch Abruptio and he also gave it an extremely positive review.

Abruptio opened in select theaters on September 27, and will continue its run through at least mid-October. Hopefully, it will expand into even more theaters, because it’s a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen.

It’s been a couple years since we’ve heard a peep about The Collected, the planned third installment in the horror trilogy that began with The Collector and continued with The Collection. The hotly anticipated film had briefly entered production before shutting down back in 2020, you may recall, but it sounds like it’s getting a second chance at life here in 2024.

Chatting with YouTube’s David Clair-Bennett, director Marcus Dunstan (The Collector, The Collection, #Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead) offers up an exciting update this week.

Terrifier 3 has cast a star to play the real Santa Claus. Daniel Roebuck will play Santa during Art the Clown's Christmas rampage. Roebuck is an actor with many horror titles on his resume including the Rob Zombie movies Halloween II and The Munsters.

Terrifier 3 has now cast the actual Santa Claus. The upcoming slasher sequel will be set on Christmas, eschewing the typical Halloween setting of the previous rampages of its now iconic villain Art the Clown. In addition to Art star David Howard Thornton and writer-director Damien Leone returning for the project, it will also feature Terrifier 2 survivors Lauren Lavera and Elliot Fullam as Sienna and Jonathan Shaw as well as Samantha Scaffidi as Victoria Heyes, a character introduced in the first movie.

Bloody Digusting has now shared an exclusive image of Santa Claus from the upcoming Terrifier 3, who will be played by Daniel Roebuck.

Daniel Roebuck has racked up over 250 credits over the course of a career that has lasted nearly 40 years so far, and our friends at Bloody Disgusting have just broken the news that one of his next credits will be on writer/director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, which is set to receive a theatrical release on October 25th. According to the site, Roebuck will be appearing in the film as Santa Claus. It seems fitting, because Roebuck was already in Santa mode for a family-friendly movie called Saint Nick of Bethlehem, which he co-wrote and co-directed. That movie will be released later this year as well.

Roebuck provided the following statement: “I’ve been holding this secret for a long time! I’ve been really excited about it. I’m actually entering into the movies that I watch. It’s extraordinary. This is Terrifier bigger, badder, best.“

Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses is getting an officially licensed co-operative tabletop game from Trick or Treat Studios, we recently learned, and this week we’ve been provided with the official box art ahead of the game’s launch on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter.

The company previews today, “Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses Board Game will be launching soon on Kickstarter from Trick or Treat Studios.”

In the game you’ll be able to “join the Firefly family in a cooperative gameplay experience, and decide the fate of the intruders, in a unique take where you play as the villains.”

We told you earlier this week about Stiletto, an upcoming horror movie from director Samuel Gonzalez Jr. (The Retaliators) that’s being described as a throwback to the early slashers of the 1980s. Bloody Disgusting has now exclusively learned that makeup effects legend Tom Savini and his creative partner Jason Baker designed the killer’s mask for the film!

The duo most recently designed the mask for Ethan Hawke’s sinister “The Grabber” in box office hit The Black Phone, which is getting a sequel from Blumhouse in Summer 2025.

Baker tells Bloody Disgusting in a statement, “Creating the killer’s mask for Samuel Gonzalez Jr. & Gigi Gustin on Stiletto was an absolute blast. I personally drew so much inspiration from the script. The film is a morbidly beautiful mixture of beauty and carnage. And that was the mindset we used in the design. Something elegant and terrifying at the same time.

Described as a throwback to the early slashers of the 1980s, the upcoming Stiletto will star a handful of familiar faces, including Aew pro wrestling star Stephon ‘Swerve’ Strickland.

Kicking off our list is Zombie’s animated foray, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. This film follows the adventures of a washed-up luchador and his sultry sidekick as they face off against the diabolical Dr. Satan. While the animation style and voice acting are commendable, the film’s raunchy humor and disjointed narrative might not resonate with everyone. It’s a wild ride, but perhaps not the most memorable in Zombie’s oeuvre.

2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of writer/director Rob Zombie’s feature debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here), and to celebrate the occasion Lionsgate gave the film a new Blu-ray release and Trick or Treat Studios is selling a House of 1000 Corpses coloring book. Now Fathom Events has announced that they will be giving the film a theatrical re-release for two nights this Halloween season, on October 8th and October 11th.

House of 1000 Corpses has the following synopsis: Two young couples take a misguided tour onto the back roads of America in search of a local legend known as Dr. Satan. Lost and stranded, they are set upon by a bizarre family of psychotics. Murder, cannibalism and satanic rituals are just a few of the 1000+ horrors that await.

As Til Death Do Us Part opens The Best Man sits in a pew working on his speech as upbeat music plays in the background. That’s followed by similar glimpses of other wedding party members prepping for the ceremony. A flashback to The Bride and Groom, nobody in this film has a name, on vacation serves to reinforce the happy image.

But Til Death Do Us Part isn’t a Hallmark Channel rom-com or Lifetime Channel thriller. Because when The Bride gets cold feet and bails on the wedding, we find out everyone involved in the ceremony is a highly skilled assassin. Now the stood-up Groom wants more than just his ring back, and their employer doesn’t take resignations well.

Rob Zombie and Waxwork Records have collaborated multiple times in the past, and now they’re working together on a cool new project: a collection of classic horror movie soundtracks that will be released under the banner of “Rob Zombie Presents”! This line of never-before-released soundtracks, personally selected by Zombie, will include Spider Baby, Carnival of Souls, The Last Man on Earth, The House on Haunted Hill, Island of Lost Souls, plus many selections from the Hammer film library… and it all starts with the release of the soundtrack for the 1932 classic White Zombie. Exclusive: Cinedigm has acquired North American rights to the revenge flick Til Death Do Us Part starring Cam Gigandet (Twilight), Jason Patric (The Lost Boys), Natalie Burn (Black Adam) and Orlando Jones (The Time Machine), slating it for an exclusive release in theaters nationwide this summer.

The genre-bending feature directed by Daytime Emmy winner Timothy Woodward Jr. follows a bride-to-be (Burn) who, after running away on her wedding day, must fight for survival against her ex-fiancé’s seven deadly groomsmen. In the ultimate horror showdown, the groomsmen soon discover that she has no intention of going back to the life she left behind.

Also starring Ser’Darius Blain (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), D.Y. Sao (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Neb Chupin (Mindcage) and Pancho Moler (3 from Hell), the film is based on a script written by Chad Law (Black Water) and Shane Dax Taylor (Isolation).

It's genuinely surprising that the peculiar Transylvanian family residing at 1313 Mockingbird Lane was never updated for modern audiences until 2022. "The Munsters" TV show ran on CBS for only two seasons in the mid-1960s and then sat dormant for decades until Rob Zombie finally revived the series, transforming it into a Technicolor feature film that eventually landed on Netflix. The final product served as more of a prequel to the TV series that focused on the bizarre courtship between Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie) before settling down with Lily's grandfather The Count, their son Eddie and their niece Marilyn. 

Regardless of whether you're a fan of the 2022 film or not, (/Film's review wasn't exactly kind), Zombie felt like the perfect choice to direct. "The Munsters" was a dream project for the musician and filmmaker who had long been obsessed with the original series and subsequent TV...

Rob Zombie's first feature film, 2003's "House of 1000 Corpses," is a filthy little nightmare of a movie. Shot for only $7 million, Zombie's film took a lot of tonal and visual cues from Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but filtered through the director's ultraviolent heavy metal sensibility. The film was bleak, violent, grimy, and uncomfortable. It also didn't make a lot of sense. What, for instance, was the true nature of the subterranean cyborg named Dr. Satan? It wouldn't be until the 2005 sequel, "The Devil's Rejects," that the true nihilism of the film's villains would be explored. Zombie didn't seem to care much about the victims of the wicked Firefly family -- mostly traveling students and tourists who stumble into the Firefly's unsavory roadside attractions -- choosing instead to focus on a family who have found solidarity in their mutual evil and innate need to kill and destroy.

Abacus Boards Dan Reed’s Andrew Tate Doc

Abacus Media Rights has acquired worldwide sales rights (excluding the UK) to Dan Reed’s feature doc on detained social media influencer Andrew Tate. (In)Famous: Andrew Tate, which examines the rapid rise of former kickboxer and porn entrepreneur Tate, was announced by UK network Channel 4 last week. At the end of last year Tate was arrested by Romanian police on suspicion of rape, organized crime and human trafficking. He and his brother Tristan remain in jail after being detained ahead of trial. Reed, best known for Channel 4 doc Leaving Neverland, has secured full access to Tate and was in Romania during the period Tate was arrested. The film will look at how he became successful so quickly.

Death and the horror genre go hand in hand. Not every scary movie features the death of a character, and horror is certainly not the only type of film in which characters die, but terrifying films deal with the business of death (i.e. the realms both near and beyond the grave). Once the cameras stop rolling and the director yells "cut," most actors walk back into the sunlight and leave the terrifying scenes they're creating behind. Every once in a while, the shadow of death seems to follow actors home, claiming them shortly after they've finished making their films. Sometimes these deaths lead to rumors of curses and jinxed productions, but they are simply one part of life's vicious circle. However, unsettling coincidences and the eerieness of seeing an actor in a role after passing on often lead to the feeling that something darker is afoot.

The star of John Carpenter’s original Assault on Precinct 13 back in 1976, we’ve learned the sad news today that prolific actor Austin Stoker has passed away at the age of 92.

Rob Zombie, who recently directed Austin Stoker in 3 from Hell, writes on Instagram: “Just heard of the passing of Austin Stoker. Was always a fan of his movies from Assault on Precinct 13 to Battle for the Planet of the Apes. Obviously I was thrilled to have him be part of 3 From Hell. His time on set was brief but fun.”

Austin Stoker’s acting career began back in 1969 with an appearance on “The Mod Squad,” and from there he racked up credits throughout the 1970s in shows and movies including Battle for the Planet of the Apes, Horror High, “Kojak,” Airport 1975, Abby, “Return to the Planet of the Apes,” Assault on Precinct 13, “The Six Million Dollar Man” and “Roots.

Austin Stoker, a veteran actor who most notably starred in John Carpenter’s sophomore feature “Assault on Precinct 13” and co-starred with Pam Grier in the 1975 blaxploitation feature “Sheba, Baby,” died Friday of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 92.

Details regarding Stoker’s death were shared by his wife of 43 years, Robin Stoker, on her personal Facebook Monday evening. Robin called Austin “the love of my life” in her tribute.

In another tribute, actor and director Bill Duke hailed Stoker as “one of Hollywood’s unsung actors” and shared his blessings to his family.

Austin Stoker, the actor from Trinidad who starred as the heroic cop battling a band of marauding gang members inside a decommissioned police station in the John Carpenter thriller Assault on Precinct 13, has died. He was 92.

Stoker died Friday of renal failure on his birthday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, his wife, Robin, told The Hollywood Reporter. “His transition was beautiful,” she said.

Stoker also portrayed Macdonald, the human assistant of Roddy McDowall’s Caesar, in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), the fifth and final chapter in the original movie series, and he was Brick Williams, the love interest of Pam Grier’s private investigator, in Sheba, Baby (1975).

On the landmark 1977 ABC miniseries Roots, he played Virgil Harvey, father of Olivia Cole‘s Mathilda.

Say what you will about Rob Zombie, but you can’t pretend he isn’t consistent. As a musician, a stage performer and a filmmaker, Zombie has made a lucrative and (mostly) artistically intriguing career out of his boundless affection for schlock. Whether it’s ultraviolent horror movies, low-budget luchador adventures or goofy monster sitcoms, his love of B-movie media always jumps out at the audience. And at his best, he convinces us to love his weird obsessions too. At his worst… well, we’ll get to that.

Honorable Mention: “Grindhouse”: “Werewolf Women of the SS” (2007)

Rob Zombie’s fake trailer from the 2007 double-feature “Grindhouse” stands out, but not necessarily in a good way. His teaser is a rather obvious riff on exploitation sleaze like “Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS,” but making her an actual wolf, with tasteless Nazi imagery and an also tasteless cameo from Nicolas Cage as the racist caricature Fu Manchu.

Daniel Roebuck has come a long way from his days playing a private investigator on "Matlock," where he acted opposite '60s sitcom legend Andy Griffith. In Rob Zombie's "The Munsters," Roebuck has donned vampire makeup to play another character from a '60s sitcom: namely, The Count, also known within the franchise as Count Sam Dracula or just "Grandpa." It's a role Roebuck inherited from Al Lewis and it's one that sees him promoting a movie that was already drawing mixed reviews even before its release, based on the lighting and editing of its trailers.

In a forthcoming interview with /Film's Jeff Ewing, Roebuck reveals that he has been reading the newspaper at the breakfast table like Grandpa, or perhaps just hearing some impertinent online anti-Munsters chatter. Roebuck defends "The Munsters" against the Rob Zombie "haters," saying:

"The elephant in the room is there's a lot of haters out there.

If you couldn't tell from the hit single "Dragula" from his 1998 debut album "Hellbilly Deluxe," Rob Zombie has been a fan of "The Munsters" for a very long time. So when the opportunity arose for the cult horror filmmaker and musician to revive the beloved 1960s sitcom, it's no surprise that he jumped at the chance. However, a number of false starts kept the project in limbo on several occasions, so the anticipation kept building and building for Zombie's vision.

With the film finally being released today, is it possible for the long-awaited PG-rated adaptation from the director who brought us "House of 1000 Corpses" and "Lords of Salem" to live up to the hype? We'll find out soon enough, but that question ultimately didn't weigh heavy on the shoulders Jeff Daniels Phillips, who is literally and figuratively stepping into the very large shoes of the Transylvanian-American patriarch Herman Munster.

Back in the 1960s, if you wanted to watch a weekly sitcom about monsters living in suburbia, there were only two games in town: “The Addams Family,” about a group of kooks whose wealth and largely normal looks gave them the freedom to pursue their freaky interests, and “The Munsters,” about a working-class group of unmistakable monsters whose outward appearance provided a humorous contrast to their utter normalcy.

The Addams Family have gone on to great cinematic success in the decades following their sitcom (and the New Yorker cartoons on which it was based), with successful live-action and animated movies to their name. But Hollywood hasn’t been quite so kind to The Munsters. Their show was originally a bigger hit than “The Addams Family,” but they’ve never been cinematically rebooted for the big screen. (Not counting the series spinoff “Munster Go Home!” in 1966.)
