Strong doc about important subject

This is a very good documentary about a problem much more pervasive than most people realize. I know that in my midwestern hometown, the same thing could easily have happened when I was in high school decades ago--except then the girl almost certainly wouldn't have reported being assaulted, realizing that even if she did, the school, parents and police probably would have "hushed it up" to protect the all-important football team, and she would have most likely gotten "slut-shamed" besides.

And all the one-star reviews here? Click on the relevant users' names, and you'll find that "mysteriously," none of them ever seem to have reviewed another title on IMBD. Yeah, I guess some folk are still invested in covering up this incident, and revising the history that the documentary chronicles. Too little, too late, folks.

Why do girls always go to the bathroom in pairs ?

I found it incredibly frustrating as this doc presented rape culture like a brand new topic. It's not. I was 11 when this happened and I remember talking with my friends and instead of focusing on the crime we simply stated, "that's why girls go to washroom together." What I do think it did a great job at is showcasing the uniqueness of America as a first world country. How this small town immediately rejected this girl, how people from out of town had to stand up for her, and it was on those court steps that I really felt something for other victims speaking out.

Tough but good documentary

Weird title though or at least I'm not sure what "hidden" message it contains. Whatever the case the documentary is not an easy watch. The whole argument that women are to blame for actions men take is beyond disgusting. Especially when it comes to consent.

The topic itself is quite horrendous and it will trigger some people to say some incredibly sexist and disgusting things. But while there may be other cases with gray areas, this one was so crystal clear you do wonder ... well actually the film takes a lot of the questions away. There is the "boys will be boys" and "let's not ruin their career over some minor thing". If you feel sick when hearing or even reading this, it means you have a certain amount of decency. I think I've seen something that also had the topic or rather the same "event" and explored it, but this was almost going further, showing depths that you really don't want to see or explore in other human beings ...

disturbing

Its like the college comedies of the 80's and 90's, soccer are for sukkers, football are for the footballers. theyve always had the power to dominate their environment, and as to this case the rape that were commited and thank god the victim werent killed, shows just a 1 in a 1000 tip of the ice berg in these fraternities. let it be told , and use the social media to reveal the culprits you know about, and use the self pronounced crime bloggers for what they are and can, because they got the heart and guts to act and protect the way the officials cant. howcome american football need so extremely vast number of players on the teams? it seems to me that a football game are just a bunch of time outs, with coaches beheaded with some kida astronout headsets, im sure the have some spy sats hanging over the pits to view the game for them, to make the football stars even brighter.i think american football is a big joke, and its just away for the american public to soscialize in a well protected and fairly safe zone for a few hours. the rest is like having a romantic interlude until all of a sudden a swimmer chases away from the others and crosses the white line , and everybody relieve a screaming climax of joy for the swimmer who hit the golden egg .

this is a good documentary, though a bit biased on the prosecution side, but thats all right. it has its own drive and that is the key to a good documentary the perputrators got punished , but its a digrace of justice the small sentences given. 10000000 $ of fine shouldve been paid to the victim.....

so if you have problems with american sports and their god like excecuters then the grumpy old man recommends a look at this docu.

The radio host needs to be exposed

This is a great doc. The victim blaming radio host needed to be exposed. What an utterly evil man. Other than that the doc is great. Great display of how high school kids can bow to peer pressure when there's one or two bad apples that control everything.

The BBC Storyville Doc shows the darkness that many parents ignore

Only in America! And it takes a BBC documentary to showcase this dirty town.

I'm a fella , I was a young lad once and I was no angel but we never considered behaving like the filth on show in this. The boys on video made my skin crawl and if it had been my sister no sheriff or judge or justice or whatever would have passed sentence before myself and my mates.

It really is a case of money buying justice, the principle and coaching staff should be jailed for enabling.

What a craphole of country . Not even 3rd world

Ugh. Too many lies.

My law professor made us study all the facts of the case before watching this and I'm so glad i did. This had some truth but, 95% was trying to ruin people that had nothing to do with actual case.

You Will Become Passionate About Roll Red Roll

Sometimes it is difficult to offer an objective opinion of a film, when the content fills you with rage - Roll Red Roll is one of those films. The film tries to offer information that is publicly available in a manner that wants to offer both sides of the subject, but then pulls back and decides 'We're Going To Shame All Residents Of Steubenville, Ohio'. In my opinion, Roll Red Roll did not go far enough in portraying Steubenville, Ohio as a dirty, filthy place full of dirty, filthy people. What the criminals in this film do not realize - They have been marked by Anonymous, and they will be marked for life.

Excellent

I was first asked to see a viewing of this film for extra credit in my Human Sexuality class, but I would honestly watch it again. This film is so insightful in regards to rape culture and toxic masculinity in American society. It does an excellent job of diverting the attention from the survivor and really honing in on the perpetrators who were at fault. Highly recommend if there is a screening in your area!!Sexuality

3 thumbs down.

The whole story was terrible but, knowing the actual facts of the case and then watching this doc made it a very disappointing watch. Hit Piece.

Don't believe the trolls: This is real

This case is so incredibly cut and dried that it is ridiculous. One can literally follow the media posted regarding the rape; the evidence is undeniable. I had the pleasure of attending a screening of Roll Red Roll and spoke with the director after. Schwartzman is a brilliant story teller, and I am so glad that rape culture is coming to the forefront of the public mind.

A vital film told by professionals.

A great doc which deserves all of the awards and accolades it has won and will win this year.

It may be a hard watch at times, but this film will hopefully lead to thousands of conversations that need to be had among men to make the changes that are so desperately needed in our society.

An important film on rape culture

This was an incredibly powerful film that showcases the realities of toxic masculinity in the United States. A wonderful film to show high school and college students to create fruitful and important discussions.

Gave good insight on things

It was a good movie needed more details on things but I know that the director did not want to make it more painful for the victims. It's not fake it's all public record and we all watched it unfold on the news.

A must see for these times

I was truly disturbed by this documentary, and yet feel every parent should see this. Well done, Nancy Schwartzman, you have articulated the unspoken crimes of our generation that is not so new. This is a much needed documentary to watch with your kids.

Amazing

A very worthwhile film to watch. Although not an easy watch. Feel this should be shown in all senior schools. Thought provoking and heartbreaking that the behaviour in the film exists. Will make people more inclined to step up and step in to stop the sexual abuse earlier in it's tracks and make this a better world for all of us.

A Must Watch Movie!

Shining a light on privilege and injustice! American society mistreats its young people by setting the stage for tragedies like this to happen. I thank the filmmakers for bringing this to our attention.

Necessary Light Shone on Darkness

What a bold and necessary story. In a culture full of excuses for rapists and blame for victims, to speak the truth is an act of heoricism. I love how carefully researched each part of the story was, and appreciate the lengths the filmmaker went to to reveal an unbiased true account to the best of her ability. That this was funded by 9 female producers only makes me love it more. I can't wait to see more from this director, and to see a cultural shift toward respect for women.

Powerful story and film

This is an incredible film, made in a way that truly shows the parts of the culture we live in the promotion and cover up sexual assault and rape. Intense film so be prepared, and a powerful tool to teach these issues.
