It might be time for the Academy to invite the “Sandman.”
Adam Sandler has long been one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, but his work in Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly” could finally land him where critics and cinephiles have long wanted to see him: in the Oscar race.
The U.S. premiere at the Telluride Film Festival marked a career-defining moment for Sandler, who joined Baumbach and co-star Laura Dern on stage as the filmmaker received a Silver Medallion tribute. Dern, who won her supporting actress Oscar for Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” (2018), praised her longtime collaborator, while Sandler reflected on Baumbach’s ability to “write the most beautiful words.”
Despite his box office dominance, Sandler has rarely been considered a serious Academy Awards contender. Over the years, critics have championed his work in films like Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love,” the Safdie brothers’ frenetic “Uncut Gems” and...

Saturday Night Liveis losing a beloved cast member as Heidi Gardner makes her exit from the show. She's also the fourth SNL star to leave in the past week.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Heidi Gardner is officially making her exit from the cast of Saturday Night Live after nearly a decade on the series. Leading up to the 51st season of "Saturday Night Live" premiere on October 4, 2025, showrunner Lorne Michaels teased a "shake-up" at the late night sketch show (via Puck). After making good on that promise by axing cast members like Devon Walker, the Norm Macdonald-esque Michael Longfellow, and single season featured player Emil Wakim, one of the biggest changes yet came with word that longtime cast member Heidi Gardner would not be returning to "SNL."
Vulture was the first to report on Heidi Gardner's departure from "SNL." As for the reasoning, it's not clear whether Gardner wasn't asked back or if she chose to leave the show after eight seasons. However,...

In a major shakeup ahead of SNL’s anticipated 51st season, Heidi Gardner is bowing out after eight incredible years on the iconic sketch show. Gardner joined SNL way back in 2017 and quickly became a fan favorite for her offbeat characters—just think of “Bailey Gismert” and the unforgettable “Angel, Every Boxer’s Girlfriend from Every Boxing Movie Ever.” She held the crown as SNL’s longest-running female cast member last season, but now, like recent headline-grabbing exits such as Emil Wakim’s departure, Gardner is stepping away as the SNL stage is reset for the next era.

Heidi Gardner is leaving “Saturday Night Live” after eight seasons, multiple sources tell Variety.
The news comes amid a shake-up at the NBC sketch comedy series, which this week saw the departure of Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim and Devon Walker ahead of Season 51.
Last season, Gardner was the longest-tenured current female cast member. In Season 49, she appeared in more sketches than any other cast member. She is well-known for her “Weekend Update” characters including the teen movie critic Bailey Gismert and Angel, “every boxer’s girlfriend from every movie about boxing ever.”
Outside of “SNL,” Gardner has appeared in “Shrinking” alongside Jason Segel, as well as “The Other Two” and the Adam Sandler basketball movie “Hustle.”
NBC declined to make producers available for comment.

It now ranks as the movie with the highest weekly viewership in the history of Nielsen’s Top 10 rankings. The movie that previously held that record was Netflix’s “Glass Onion.” “Happy Gilmore 2” also had the best opening streaming week for any Sandler movie to date. The Netflix Original Movie has become its own genre or a stamp of approval, winning prestigious awards and immensely entertaining us while also introducing new filmmakers and underseen movies across the globe. With a powerful online streaming giant like Netflix, indie movies and filmmakers can break free from the constraints of traditional censorship and tell their unfiltered stories. Paramount Pictures has countersued the cousin of a writer on Top Gun: Maverick, who alleges he co-wrote the screenplay, opening another front in the legal battle over alleged copyright infringement in the writing process for the film.
In a lawsuit filed on Wednesday in California federal court, the studio alleges Shaun Gray deliberately hid his role in penning key scenes, with the aim of asserting claims for idea theft and seeking joint ownership of the screenplay. It accuses him of fraud and infringing on its copyrights.
With the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Gray “saw an opportunity to shake down” Paramount, states the complaint.
In a statement, Marc Toberoff, a lawyer for Gray, said Paramount’s counterclaims are “designed to scare and intimidate” the writer “from asserting his authorial rights.”

Adam Sandler is much more than just the person that people view him through those comedic lenses, and the highest-rated movie of his career actually proves that. Though he is famed for all his physical and voice acting comedy roles that have established him as a Goat primary comedic leading actor in films, his flick Hustle from 2022 shows a different side of him.
The movie is set in the world of Stanley Sugerman, the travel-weary Philadelphia 76ers NBA scout whose love for basketball is unparalleled, but who is stuck looking for the next unknown talent while having higher dreams of being a coach. His search eventually leads him to Bo Cruz, a raw but talented player in Spain, with whom he connects on and off the court.

One major sequel to a classic comedy leads this list, but there’s plenty more to stream beyond the Sandler-verse.
Netflix’s long-running deal with Adam Sandler is finally starting to pay off in a big way. With the massive release of “Happy Gilmore 2,” the streamer has gone all-in on Sandler nostalgia, and I’m all here for it. The original “Happy Gilmore” would’ve landed on this list too, but it’s getting pulled on July 31st. Still, Sandler shows up more than once below, and he’s not the only reason to hit play. This list has a little bit of everything: horror, thrillers, action, and comedy — the kind of lineup that reminds you why Netflix is the biggest dog in the streaming world. So, here are the top seven movies streaming on Netflix right now.

It’s been almost 30 years since Happy Gilmore teed off, and the sequel doesn’t waste time getting into the swing of things. It’s got the laughs, the throwbacks, and just enough blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details to keep diehard fans on their toes. Adam Sandler’s back as the unfiltered golf legend, now dealing with fatherhood and a second shot at glory – still loud, still angry, still hilarious. But the real gold? It’s in the background.
Quick nods to the original, surprise cameos, inside jokes, and a few personal touches that connect straight to Sandler’s off-screen life. You probably missed a few. Most people did. Here are ten Easter eggs that flew under the radar – even for the fans who thought they knew it all.

On July 25, It's time to head back to the links — and the 1990s — with Adam Sandler. The star is picking up his golf clubs again for Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2, a belated follow-up to the 1996 golf comedy that propelled him onto Hollywood's comedy A-list. It's the first time that Sandler has revisited one of those vintage comedies; to date, his only live-action sequels to previous successes have been Grown-Ups 2 and Murder Mystery 2.
Interestingly, Happy Gilmore 2 is arriving on Netflix one month ahead of Sandler's latest seriocomic turn; the actor will be starring alongside George Clooney in Noah Baumbach's Venice-bound feature Jay Kelly. And the two actors will likely be joined at the hip throughout awards season as Clooney positions himself for his first Best Actor nomination since The Descendants way back in 2013. (He won a Best Supporting Actor statuette in 2007 for Syriana.)

Set your expectations appropriately, and “Happy Gilmore 2” is pretty much par for the course. Hold too tightly to your love of the original, and the sequel shanks into the drink for bogey.
The 29-years-later follow-up to 1996’s beloved gonzo golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” one of the films that launched Adam Sandler’s big-screen stardom, is kinder, gentler and much older (if not wiser) than the original. It’s a palpable vibe shift. Even when the new film drops callbacks to the first one and trots out some gags reminiscent of its predecessor, its roll is slower. Sweeter. Nicer. And that’s not great for a Happy Gilmore movie.
Gone are the first film’s signature blistering tantrums. Come on, you loved them. We all did. It was flat-out fun watching young Happy absolutely lose it on the course as the establishment looked on in horror. In the sequel, he...

Almost 30 years later, an Adam Sandler comedy is now a streaming hit ahead of its long-awaited sequel. A lot of Sandler's best movies are comedies from the 1990s and 2000s, including Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates. Many of these have plenty of admirers, despite their poor reviews.
Although Sandler has added some different flavors to his filmography, with movies like Uncut Gems and Hustle, he will probably always be primarily associated with his joyous lowbrow comedies. This is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, because Sandler has mastered this particular craft.

Netflix is bringing together George Clooney and Adam Sandler in a new “heartbreaking comedy,” Jay Kelly. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach, the Netflix feature is set for a theatre release on November 14. It will hit Netflix 3 weeks later.
The movie centers on a world-famous actor, Jay Kelly (Clooney), who may be adored by the world but needs to learn a lot about himself. Alongside his longtime manager Ron (Sandler), Jay embarks on a soul-searching journey through Europe. Both men must confront their past, their relationship, and their legacies.
According to Netflix Tudum, Jay Kelly is a “heartbreaking comedy” about an actor and his manager. The logline says, “Everybody knows J. Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself.” The limited plot detail sets the tone for the movie about identity and exploration.

Despite being fired from SNL, Adam Sandler went on to become one of the biggest comedic movie stars of all time. Using his unmatched silliness, Sandler leapt from the small screen and burst onto the big screen with an energy and delivery that movie-going audiences had never seen. But Sandler isn’t anchored in the realm of absurdity, and some of his best performances have come in some incredibly serious dramatic roles.
In honor of Happy Gilmore 2, here are Adam Sandler’s top 10 movies ranked from worst to best.

Like it or not, Adam Sandler is among the most successful movie stars of the last three decades and has remarkably been able to make films that have resonated with multiple generations of comedy fans. While many former alumni of “Saturday Night Live” struggled to develop film careers, Sandler developed his own brand of ridiculous comedies, which led to the development of Happy Madison Productions. Despite the scathing reviews that many of his films earned from critics during their initial release windows, several have grown cult fandom from those who grew up with them. Sandler was also ahead of the game when it came to the profitability of streaming, as he was among the first Hollywood stars to sign a deal with Netflix.
Sandler has certainly been known to phone it in, as films like “Grown Ups,” “Little Nicky,” “Blended,” and “Jack and Jill” rank among the worst comedies of the 21st century.

Virginia (Bowen) is also the romantic interest of Happy (Sandler).
When it came to the long-awaited sequel, though, Bowen was shocked to be asked to return. “I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all,” Bowen said during the “Inside of You” podcast, as reported by Variety. “I mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one, ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’”
However, Sandler assured Bowen that Virginia is the “heart of the movie” even though Bowen noted she has less screentime than in the first film. “Adam’s like, ‘Stop saying that.

Whether you’re into basketball, wrestling, or golf, these picks bring the heat.
I caught “F1 The Movie” over the weekend, and I’ve gotta say — this thing rips. From the cinematography to the performances, it’s as intense and locked-in as any sports movie I’ve seen in a long time. It hits the gas and never lets up, and you can feel it in every frame. It’s a great movie, plain and simple — and it’s gonna do serious numbers at the box office. Watching it got me thinking about other sports movies that go just as hard, and so I pulled together a top 7 list of the best ones streaming right now. It’s got different sports, different speeds, but all quality. Let’s go!
Top 7 sports movies on streaming right now.
No. 7: ‘Rez Ball’
No. 6: ‘Ford v Ferrari’
No. 5: ‘The Beautiful Game’

Another Adam Sandler sports comedy is heading to Hulu. Following Happy Gilmore's addition to the streamer's library earlier this month, The Longest Yard will make its way onto the platform at the top of next month.
Beginning July 1, The Longest Yard will be available to stream on Hulu. Released in 2005, the Peter Segal-directed sports comedy stars Sandler as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a washed-up former professional football quarterback who goes to prison and is forced to assemble a team to play against the guards. The movie was a remake of the 1974 movie of the same name starring Burt Reynolds, who appears in the new version as Nate Scarborough, a former college football star who agrees to coach the prisoners' team. Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly, William Fichtner, David Patrick Kelly, Tracy Morgan, and Cloris Leachman also appear in supporting roles.
The Longest Yard was a commercial success, grossing $191.5 million worldwide off an $82 million budget.

Wilson starred in the Netflix comedy Senior Year, which was the streamer’s 9th most watched film of 2022, as well as the most watched film among female-led originals. Eighty-nine million Netflix accounts globally streamed the film its first ten days of release, outperforming all male-driven comedies on the platform that year.

Is the Academy ready to embrace Adam Sandler?
On Tuesday, Netflix released the first trailer for Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited sequel starring Sandler as the unconventional and irascible pro golfer. The short teaser quicly trended online, sparking a fresh round of love and appreciation for its star following Sandler’s well-received appearances at the Golden Globes, the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special, and the Oscars this year. However, all the goodwill feels like prologue to Sandler’s next big project: a juicy role in Noah Baumbach’s new film, Jay Kelly, opposite George Clooney and coming this fall also via Netflix. On paper, the Baumbach project is the type of movie that will find itself in the middle of the awards conversation, meaning the beloved Sandler could finally receive recognition from the Academy after snubs for Uncut Gems and Hustle. Ahead is the extremely early case for Sandler...

After nearly three decades, Happy Gilmore is ready to return to the golf course.
Netflix on Tuesday released the teaser trailer for the upcoming film Happy Gilmore 2, a direct sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 slapstick comedy.
While the original film saw Gilmore (Sandler), a failed ice hockey player turned surprise golf sensation, upset pro Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) at a major tournament, the sequel sees Gilmore return to the game after a long absence.
“I haven’t swung a club in years,” Gilmore says in the trailer, as he prepares to return to the game to take on some of sport’s current stars.
“We’re not done with golf,” says Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen). “Let them see the Happy I fell in love with.”
The sequel is loaded with cameos, including Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, Eminem, Ben Stiller (likely reprising his uncredited role of...
