A quite peculiar short film directed by veteran music video director Flávio Colker, "Metalguru" doesn't have a specific destination while mixing a
group of strange characters trying to figure out what they want from their lives. Yet, there's an appeal, a charm and a humor that conquers viewers very
easily, and to those who know about the area covered in Rio de Janeiro they might have a nostalgic feeling about the place and the decade, if the
director composed things as they were with undergound groups making performances in an almost neglected area.
Basically it's about a group of people trying to follow their dreams, no matter how distant they might be. A mother/hotel manager (Renata Sorrah)
who fails to understand her complicated and whiny teenage daughter (Mariana Oliveira), who keeps stealing money from her; the brat girl meets two
female motorcyclists (Cristiana Guinle and Mariana de Moraes), whose motorcycle breaks down and gets fixed by mechanic JP (Duda Mamberti), who tries to
seduce both women but they don't fall for him as they are a couple themselves and they're in a hurry in order to get to Alaska. The girl likes the idea
and tries to convince the more imposing of the women if she can go with them and she'll give the stolen money in return. And we also have another
mechanic (Marcos Winter) who is in love with the teenager and wants her to stop stealing from her mom (who has a dream to leave everything behind and
form a rock group).
It's like those films where almost nothing happens yet we feel amused by some of the situations presented and keep wondering if there'll be some
major turn of events to shake things up, or at least move those characters out of their sad state in that abandoned scenario. The performances are
enjoyable, there are some good music played as well and at the very ending we have some message, which doesn't make of this an empty experience. But you
have to look real deep into it in order to find such message about hope for better things, even though many erratic things and many mistakes will have
to be made in order for change to come. 6/10.
