Up the Wind

"An atmospheric film, mostly inspired by young Cinnamon's story from The Wind Up Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, UP THE WIND proposes a sort of visualization - resembling a watercolor painting - of the borderland between worlds, through the distortion of space, but also through the uncannily slow passing of time. The forest as a layered buffer space turns into a spiral-shaped labyrinth, where the female character slowly loses her vitality and identity. The sound concept tries to recreate the subjective perception of a comatose patient, incorporating the hospital's ambiance into the imaginary projection of the lucid dream she is caught in. The onerous non-diegetic sound of the artificial breathing machine is noticeable from the very beginning. This sound persists until the end of the film, representing the structure supporting the ethereal ambiance of the forest and the wind. The character gives the impression that she doesn't breathe naturally, except in the scene where she discovers the object hidden in the ground and has a tachycardia attack - the shock causes her a brief mental paralysis that leads her to loose even the capacity of externalizing fear."
