Champions, by ep. 7, finally gets in the game, but is it too late?

After a wobbly start, this series is beginning to find its footing and actually be funny, while at the same time finding some heart.

It's done this by letting Michael actually be a kid, albeit a precocious one, and letting Vince actually exhibit some character growth. And by letting Matthew be Matthew. The humor relies less on glib one-liners and more on the situations they find themselves in.

But it sure took the writers/producers a while to figure this out and I fear they may have lost the audience.

I actually enjoyed it

To all the other reviews calling this show out for being over the top and that it's acting is ridiculous... I think people don't see that that's part of its charm! The stupid jokes and overacting ARE the show!! Yes it's silly and dumb, but I enjoy these kinds of shows once in a while just to laugh.

Easy fun viewing

This is a fun and easy to watch show. Yes, there is little depth to it and the lead character is basically nothing but a stereotype but it is the kind of program you could switch on and be reliably, and gently, amused. Plus there is the eye candy of Andy Favreau.

BE YOU, BE CHAMPIONS!

First seen Champions when it first aired and watched it again on Hulu. Fell in love with the show and it's hilarious breakthrough, prime characters, and story-line etc. the show not only brings laughter, as well brings devotion. In the pilot episode when J.J. Totah sung on stage it blew me away. His voice is beyond beautiful. J.J. Totah is so fabulous his character brings Champions to delight we love him dearly. The entire cast and creators of this series has done a phenomenal job bringing such work of art to the screen. We're all looking forward in seeing this show go far and we cannot wait for the next upcoming episodes. Thanks for making Champions possible, it expresses so much meaning. BE YOU, BE CHAMPIONS! GOD BLESS YOU!

okay, nothing special

Just watched the first episode. It was fine, basically, with a few laughs.

It's also nothing you haven't seen before. Guy without much nurturing in him suddenly has to take care of a kid and is torn between his good and bad instincts. There's someone more nurturing to help out; in this case a brother.

The kid is gay, out, and a bit stereotypical. He's going to a school for musicians, and he is *heavily* autotuned, which really bugs me although I think people under a certain age just think that's how singers sound.

I did not mind the show. I would not be horrified at the idea of watching another episode. But I feel no need to watch another episode.

Better than expected

Wish it had more seasons, it's adorable and fun. I know it can be problematic in using some stereotypes but it's really fun and we should be able to enjoy something just because it's entertaining, I don't need tv to teach me lessons all of the time.

Who is this show aimed at?

I have watched it all, and I really am confused. It seems to aim for the feminists with some of the jokes and then to the very opposite with some jokes, and I feel that it's very hard to find out who the characters really are, because of this - the continuity seems very far off sometimes. I finished it, but I must admit, I don't see how this show can get better, it is very wobbly.

And honestly, isn't the Mindblowingly Stupid Character-trope really overdone by now? I think this is where I leave this show, and honestly I have no idea who I would recommend it to.

Lighten Up, People

I don't know why people are so irritated about this series, it is a fun show! yes, the plot might be too basic for some people but it does not make this show any less funny. the characters are lovely, jokes are of course very Mindy Kaling-y which i will never complain about. come on, just give this a try!

Walk away and then come back to give it another shot.

Forget what you know about The Mindy Project because that expectation can leave you disappointed. Three episodes in, I had to walk away, and I would have given this three stars. Two weeks later, I gave it another shot and it's actually pretty funny. It has a Mindy-esque vibe with a couple of The Mindy Project alumni actors returning to reprise different roles for this show. For a sitcom, Champions challenges "taboo" subjects and political correctness in a meaningful but light-hearted way. As other reviews have suggested, it does better after a few episodes in.

Writing needs work

First show was very good. I like the cast. But the second show was not as good. I can't imagine a smart kid like that leaving the water running full blast while he reads a magazine, box of cereal emptied on the table. Not believable that that his mom would allow such behavior as well. And the writers are making this kid look way too ungrateful. It made me sympathize with the dad and hate the ungrateful kid. I hope the kid learns gratitude. If I can't root for the kid I think it defeats the purpose of the show. So far he is very unlikable and I would ban him from my apt and not feel a bit guilty. The writing needs more subtly to make if more believable. I think this show has potential but for now.It lacks "heart"..

Give it a shot!

It took a while for this show to find its footing, but once it has (by ep. 5), it's REALLY GOOD. It's one of the wittiest, smartly-written comedies around.

I don't understand how anyone can be annoyed with JJ Totah. What he's representing in this show means so much to a lot of people and he does so with infectious charm and energy.

I'm interested to find out the other characters' stories so I hope they get more than one season. Give it a shot, people.

Ouch!

Can't get through more than one episode. As a gay man, I find the kid character more offensive than the second Sex and the City movie. I read reviews that the show gets better after 6 episodes, but I. This day and age, with so many shows to choose from, who would still be watching?

The kid is not loveable

When I saw Anders, with a hard An from Workaholics was in a new show with Mindy of the Mindy Project I thought I had hit the jackpot but this show is a little lost and the child actor portraying a young homosexual Indian boy (played by Josie Totah) is unloveable and comes across as far too obnoxious and too much of a know-it-all.

Anders and Mindy are good in this and the supporting cast isn't bad either (I think I love Dana - played by Ginger Gonzaga) but the kid is irritable, comes across as very obnoxious and arrogant and simply isn't loveable. I think with a more loveable, less know-it-all homosexual child this could have been a good show and allowed for a lot more humour derived from that part. I understand what they were trying to do and the subject material does give them a lot of interesting story lines that other shows wouldn't be able to do and I would love to know what others thought but I just didn't like the child at any stage even after finishing the entire first (and likely only) series.

A bit typical but fun and has potential.

I th know this show is actually pretty good. Most shows take a few episodes to find their feet and I hope this one sticks around long enough to find them. The leads are charming and, yes, the acting is a bit over the top but it is a sit-com after all. Definitely give it a chance.

This show is so bad, that I watch it just to get upset.

Almost like they had the premise to shoot the "you are the father, take care of him, at your bachelor pad" and added indian characters boom. Failed tv show.

Getting really funny

As the show has gone on, the characters are becoming funnier especially the brother Matthew. He might be my favorite. I can definitely see Mindy's sense of humor which I enjoy and I'm glad the show has gotten better with each episode.

Wow This Was Bad

I lasted two episodes and regret sitting through the second one. I'm tired of over-the-top characters being passed off as people you come across everyday. People in LA have a skewed view of the rest of the world and don't seem capable of making shows about families that look like people not living in Southern California.

Should've Lasted

I'm watching Champions for the second time and it's even funnier than the first time and it really should have been given a chance for more people to discover it. Plus it's from the brilliant mind of Mindy Kaling and has an amazing cast, many of which were on The Mindy Project another great series.

I really wanted to like this show.....

I loved The Mindy Project and all the roles. Knowing that this show had several of the same people in it I had high hopes for it. It's just not a good show. I keep watching it hoping it'll get better but it's not.

I hope Mindy Kaling can find a new show to star in. I love her as an actress, but this one is not a good show.

Don't cancel Champions!

I don't want it to be canceled because the jokes are funny especially the references. My favorite part about the show is the actors because they're very talented especially J.J. Totah! If the show is cancelled maybe you put it on Netflix! The demographics are different on Netflix.

The kid ruins it

The writing is fun, the characters have deep atcha, it's just the right amount of reminiscent of the Mindy project which I loved. But I'm not sure why the cast the son. Really bad acting and over all u likeable. I can't watch it.

Unwatchable

I could not make it through more that ten minutes of this. I can only conclude that people that gave this higher ratings are somehow connected to the show.

Extremely over the top. Acting and dialogue are terrible.
