Funny until it falls off a cliff after Season 2

Seasons 1 and 2 are amazing, funny, filled with witty, great writing, and good character development. Then in season 3 it falls off a cliff. Seasons 3 and 4 writing focuses on being eccentric and quirky with limited character development and a complete lack of the jokes that made the show funny to begin with. No developed jokes and the entire plot of the show seems to lose its focus. The hilarious, somewhat degenerate content that you get in seasons 1 and 2 completely vanishes. Highly recommend just cutting your losses, saving your time, and stopping after Season 2. I'm curious how they screwed it up so much with the blueprint for success laid out from the very beginning.

It's funny - not sure what other reviewers are talking about

It's a funny show. Not deep. Not important. Not filled with great character development or awesome story arcs.... just funny. There are lots of sit-coms that are popular that we don't find amusing at all, but this one is smarter than the average sit-com. If you are fans of humor with intellect, try it!

Do yourself a favour and stop after season 2

Seasons 1-2 are brilliant and make for hilarious and joyous watching. Granted, there's a touch of cheese every now and again but it always fits the growth of the characters as we watch things develop.

I'm a few episodes into season 3 and it's a complete mess. A real mess - how did they get it so wrong? From what I've just read in other reviews, it doesn't sound like things get any better in S4.

Do yourself a favour and stop at the end of season 2. For me, if they had stopped there, this show would be a solid 9/10. However, as is often the case with these things, not knowing when to end on a high has dragged this show a smidge into the mire.

First original tv show/comedy I've seen in a long time.

The comedy is intellegent in its own absurdist style. However, I've noticed a theme within the "1 Star" rating reviews; most, if not all, are saying that the show is "offence in this political climate", and should "cater more to today's political atmosphere by discussing some important topics". NOT ALL COMEDY HAS TO HAVE A POLITICAL AGENDA. Let's leave the politics on the news where it belongs. If you want a apolitical absurdist comedy: This show is for you. It's hard for me to see this show being a '1 star' rating by anyone. It's probably not fittingly a 10 (yet) that I gave it, but it's certainly higher than a 6, let along 1.

Probably should be a 9 but I'm giving it a 10 to offset all these nonsensical reviews.

This show is amazing. Howerton does re-visit his Dennis Reynolds, but I don't really see this as a bad thing as that character is PERFECT for this part. Essentially a version of "Bad Teacher" with a far funnier cast and a unique plot. Oswalt plays the role of a small town principal longing for people to like him to perfection. This show is funny, intelligent, and quirky.

As far as all the low ratings go...I'm starting to think they were written by people who couldn't sell their pilot to a network, this show is brilliant.

Being a critic isn't easy, but reading some of the reviews on this show made me cringe. People are being entirely too sensitive or expecting this show to show more of a semblance to reality...guess what??? IT'S A COMEDY TV SHOW. It doesn't have to be realistic, it's entertaining....and if you're looking to be entertained, this is a great show for you.

Laughed My @$$ Off

I watched the first 3 episodes, and I don't understand why this show is getting so much hate. The premise is fun, the kids in the class are a fun ensemble, the lead is awesome, and Patton Oswalt is great as always. I was audibly laughing throughout each episode, and I can't wait to see the premise explored further. I look forward to learning more about Jack's backstory.

Quirky and a little different

I really like this show. It is extremely quirky which kind of worries me because quirky always struggles in the ratings - and after reading some of the other reviews I can already see this happening... but if you want to watch something a little different this is the show! Hope it survives because I think it could become a sleeper cult type hit!

Show jumps shark with season 4

I absolutely loved seasons 1 through 3 it was laugh out loud funny. That's why I gave it a 7. So excited that season 4 was released - but after watching the first five episodes I'm left wondering what the hell happened to this show. It seems like they're trying too hard to be weird but forgot to add the funny it had for its last 3 seasons. The 4th season has failed to make me laugh at all. Call Fonzie this show has sadly jumped the shark.

Rich and charming characters in a unique show

What are folks talking about with the poor reviews? I do NOT get it. This show keeps me interested in each and every quirky character. The plot is as unique as the color scheme. Maybe it's just me, but I find that to be a brave deviation from the norm. And it works. I also appreciate the well timed nuances in the sound effects. Yes, this is refreshing. And I want more.

Definitely Room for Improvement

There's something that is missing in this show that I can't quite pinpoint. THE MICK has definitely filled the void of not having IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY around by basically replicating the same template of having a handful of repugnant characters playing off each other.

This show is like Dennis being a douche with no equals to counter his awfulness. At times it just gets annoying how his character just keeps bragging about having a PhD from Harvard. The supporting characters come across as kind of weak. Patton Oswalt is a good foil to Howerton, but I don't think they've done enough with that yet. So far the students in his class, instead of all having kinds of personalities, for the most part come across as one blob of two dimensional uninteresting characters. Same thing can be said of the trio of teachers he's befriended. There's some differences reflected in the dialogue, but they feel one and the same.

PARKS & RECREATIONS took a while to get grounded and I fill like this show is still trying to find its footing.

Lost The Plot

Seasons 1 and 2 of AP Bio are really funny, sharp and quite a joy to watch. Season 3 however is an absolute car crash and I'm not quite sure how it managed to go so badly wrong, it's painful but you keep watching to see if there's improvement but it's dead on its feet. Season 4 starts just as poorly and I got no further than Episode 2. It needs to be killed off, what a waste.

Better than sooo many other garbage sitcoms

To be fair, I am a huge Always Sunny fan and love Glenn Howerton. That being said, I love the premise of this show. It gets off to a slow start, but I am addicted after 3 episodes. Glenn crushes it, and the kids should develop as nice supporting roles. Not sure why everyone is rating so low. On the low end I would still give it a solid 6.5. Get to the third episode and you will be laughing out loud.

Awesome, very funny

To me what makes this show is the casting, the students are seriously hilarious, they have an excellent back and forth with their teacher. This show has me laughing out loud every episode, the teachers are also hilarious, especially the gym teacher in the first few episodes. I like philosophy and find the main characters background and views comical, this show surprisingly keeps getting better as the characters develop more. This is in my top 5 comedy shows right now, very much recommended, definitely doesn't deserve 6.9 in my opinion which is why I gave it a 10 but honestly to me it's close to a 10, very enjoyable.

Sometimes funny, but also painful to watch

I watched most of the first season, and by about midway through I actually felt my IQ drop. I was excited to watch the show. I like a lot of the talent and they do a credible job with their roles, but so often the humor seems to be the lowest hanging fruit.

The good:
  • There's some subversion on the super-unlikable main character, like calling out that he's not going to be a typical feel-good teacher outcome.
  • The humor is hit or miss, but when it hits -- it's pretty good.

The bad:
  • When the humor misses, it misses hard.
  • The show glorifies and rewards mostly awful behavior while also trying to be edgy about bringing up difficult topics.
  • The characters, even for a comedy, are so over-the-top stereotypical that it just makes me sad.

It's original and really funny. BUT...

...that's a big BUT... I watch this show with a grain of salt and my brain switched off.

To truly enjoy this show, you need to accept that this is pure fiction and things that happen on the show will never ever happen in the real world, without the consequences that our main character never gets.

In the real world, teachers will never get away with what our main character as the new AP Bio teacher does in the show. So long as you accept this show is pure fantasy of a (or many) talented comedic writer(s) and nothing more, then you will truly enjoy watching this.

But if you like real world scenarios and comedy, give this a wide berth and move on to something else.

But if you're prepared to be entertained, prepare to park your brain to the side and give this show a go.

Don't listen to the haters, also don't expect much

I love all the people on here pretending to be critics. They say it's not funny and then admit that they hate the main actor. Well no wonder you don't like it. You are also not a critic.

This show is funny if it's your kind of comedy, which in this case, it is for me. It's not complex, which I don't think it's aiming to be, so if you want complex watch Altered Carbon. I will continue to watch it and don't listen to these other "critics". Make a judgement for yourself and enjoy if you like dumb comedies.

Butthurt reviews giving 1 stars

Only watched first episode. Laughed out loud a couple times. It shows promise. It's not "Always Sunny" just like Mick isn't "Always Sunny" It has the same sort of gritty comedy that is a little crude which I enjoy.

If you look at the comedies that are on TV and receiving awards, this is right along the same caliber. Glenn's character was entertaining and that's what sitcoms are all about.

Anyone just throwing a one star at this is just being immature and lazy. It doesn't deserve that bad of a rating even if you hated the show.

What is going on with the imdb rating ?

My best guess it must have been marketed at the wrong segment, maybe someone expected the likes of two broke girls glee, fun loving characters ect.

Worst thing i can say about this show is that its kind of a Dennis(Sunny) spin off, but its clever and hilarious. Maybe its just for depraved people like me who likes it edgy and anti gentrified, and its all the wholesome people tuning in and getting disapointed.

I would compare it to Vice Principals, but more original in its writing.

Seriously, the teacher tickler made me laugh so hard, that joke alone should net this show and emmy and a decent 8 on imdb.

Community meets It's Always Sunny

After unintentionally watching both shows back to back I couldn't help but realize just how similar they are. Though overall, except for season 4 (of both shows funny enough) A. P Bio is more consistently good but it doesn't reach the brilliant heights of community when that is at its best.

The basic show is what if community was made with Dennis Reynolds instead of Jeff Winger and was set in high school instead of college. Both shows star a jaded and sarcastic once successful professional now being forced to adapt to interacting with students.

They both do meta type episodes and are generally about the titular main character growing into a better person even if they have to relinquish their past glory and both end up in a similar spots at the end.

Of course there are many differences and the humor isn't the same as Glenn Howerton has a lot more edge (basically a less psychopathic Dennis Reynolds) than Joel Mchale's more irreverent performance. And the humor varies, A. P Bio is often more of a traditionally structed single camera sitcom while Community is less structured.

Both are good shows but I figured this is the best way to describe it.

First two seasons are great

The first two seasons are great, with what seems to be a real premise. The show really jumps the shark in the third season. I don't know if there was a writers strike but being random and trying to be quirky isn't solid writing. The show gets hard to watch, and by the fourth season it just starts awful. I end up skipping episodes 10 minutes in because they're so awful. The third and fourth season is the equivalent of meeting your hero and they end up being a nightmare. For the rest of my review I'll just be pressing the random button generator on my phone, because that's how they wrote the show.

The second episode of season seven was the first one and the second episode was a little more complicated and the third episode is the first episode of season three where the show was a little different but I think the second one was the one that I was trying not too hard and I think it just didn't feel good to watch and the second one I don't think it just doesn't make any difference in terms with how it just doesn't feel good and the second one just doesn't feel like it's not really a good thing is it doesn't make me a little more interesting but it's not a good thing.
