Harris Dickinson’s Directing Debut ‘Urchin’ Acquired by 1-2 Special — It’s One of Cannes 2025’s Very Best Films
Image
Cannes 2025 festival-goers put their stamp of approval of Harris Dickinson the filmmaker, with his directing debut “Urchin” winning the Fipresci prize out of Un Certain Regard. What can’t the “Babygirl” and “Triangle of Sadness” and “Beach Rats” and “The Iron Claw” actor and future John Lennon star do?

A favorite of IndieWire’s Screen Talk podcast and Chief Film Critic David Ehrlich, “Urchin” seemed primed for a major scoop out of Cannes alongside other actor-turned-filmmakers.

Alas, it took two months since the festival’s end for rising distribution outfit 1-2 Special to step in and buy Dickinson’s film for North American distribution. Starring Frank Dillane as an unhoused, drug-chasing drifter in London, and in the vein of Mike Leigh’s “Naked” in terms of toxic emotional candor, “Urchin” follows Mike (Dillane) as he tumbles through a cycle of addiction, self-destruction, and London’s correctional system. In addition to the Fipresci prize,...

Harris Dickinson’s Directorial Debut ‘Urchin’ Sells to 1-2 Special
Image
Harris Dickinson’s directorial debut “Urchin” has been acquired for North American release by 1-2 Special, the distribution company founded in February by former Sideshow executive Jason Hellerstein. The movie, which won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Best Performance award for Frank Dillane, will be released in theaters this fall.

“Urchin” follows a “rough sleeper” in London who is trapped in a cycle of self-destruction as he struggles to turn his life around. Described as “raw and absurd,” the film is a deeply personal work for Dickinson, who broke out with acting roles in “Beach Rats” and “Triangle of Sadness” and starred opposite Nicole Kidman in last year’s “Baby Girl.”

In his positive review out of Cannes, TheWrap critic Chase Hutchinson compared “Urchin” favorably to Danny Boyle’s seminal film “Trainspotting,” because “both are films about deeply flawed people trying to do better, only to find themselves continually getting...

Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Brazilian Epic ‘The Secret Agent’ Wins Fipresci Award at Cannes: ‘A Rich, Strange and Deeply Troubling Story’
Image
Bearing out Brazil’s place as country of honor at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent” (“O Agente Secreto”) won the Fipresci Prize in the Official Selection – Competition category, granted by the International Federation of Film Critics .

Set in Brazil under military rule in 1977 and starring Wagner Moura , the film delves into themes of political repression, morality and resistance. Known for his earlier films “Aquarius” and “Bacurau,” both of which played in main comoetition at Cannes, Mendonça Filho continues his exploration of Brazil’s sociopolitical landscape with a narrative praised for its depth and ambition.

“The Secret Agent” was hailed by Variety‘s Peter Debruge as a “terrific ’70s thriller” and “dazzling period drama.”

In its assessment of the film, the Fipresci jury explained: “We chose a film that has a novelistic, epic generosity; a film that allows for digression, diversion, humor and...

Actor-Turned-Director Harris Dickinson and His Breakout Star Frank Dillane on Their Cannes Stunner ‘Urchin’
Image
It’s hard these days to create an original film from scratch, tougher still to launch a first film in the Cannes Selection. Three actors have achieved that feat this year, all playing in Un Certain Regard, where the spotlight tends to be less harsh: Scarlett Johansson’s “Eleanor the Great,” starring American veteran June Squibb; Kristen Stewart’s “The Chronology of Water,” starring British actress Imogen Poots; and from the U.K., Harris Dickinson’s “Urchin,” which will propel Frank Dillane (son of British actor Stephen Dillane) into Best Actor Oscar contention if a distributor does right by it. All the key North American distributors attended the debut on Saturday after good word leaked out of early New York screenings. Yes, it played well.

“The applause was lovely,” said Dickinson, sitting with Dillane on the roof of the J.W. Marriott Hotel with stunning views of the Gulf of Napoule.

3 Hollywood Actors Make Directorial Debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2025
Image
The Cannes Film Festival 2025 is in full swing, and as always, it’s giving us cinematic gems, red carpet drama, and a few unexpected plot twists (both on screen and off). Held annually on the French Riviera, Cannes isn’t just another film festival; it’s the global stage where auteurs debut bold visions, legends are born, and standing ovations can last longer than some short films. From the prestigious Palme d’Or to the indie-celebrating Un Certain Regard section, Cannes showcases everything from highbrow art to raw debut features, all judged by an international jury that sets the tone for the cinematic year ahead.

But this year? The buzz isn’t just about the films. Cannes threw everyone a curveball by introducing a new dress code—no more naked dresses, no more towering ballgowns. The fashion crowd is still scrambling, but honestly, the real shake-up is happening behind the camera.

Image
Clarisa Navas’ “The Prince of Nanawa” claimed Swiss doc fest Visions du Réel’s top prize, while Iranian filmmaker Bani Koshnoudi’s “The Vanishing Point” took the top Burning Lights honor.

Clarisa Navas’ “The Prince of Nanawa” has taken home the Grand Prix at international Swiss doc fest Visions du Réel, while Bani Koshnoudi’s “The Vanishing Point” earned the top award in the Burning Lights section.

Argentina’s Navas, best known for her 2020 San Sebastián-winning film “One in a Thousand,” spent a decade filming “The Prince of Nanawa.” The documentary follows the story of Ángel, a charismatic boy with fierce love for his Guarani roots and a vision for his Paraguayan hometown of Nanawa. With a camera in hand, Ángel helps craft his own story.

Quick ViewRelease date and structure of the quartet of filmsCasting of The Beatles biopicWhat would be the storyline of The Beatles biopic?

The Beatles, one of the most iconic bands of all time, is set to receive a cinematic tribute. Director Sam Mendes has announced that this groundbreaking project will be quite different from a conventional biopic.

Instead of a single film, four separate biopics—each focusing on a different member of the Fab Four—will come together as a four-film cinematic event. Mendes believes this will be the “first bingeable theatrical experience.”

“Scrapper Is One of The Most Neglected Films In Recent Times” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
This small British film with a big heart, should be on top of every movie lover’s list. Scrapper is warm, tender, sincere, and very shy about sentimentalizing the father-daughter reunion story.

Debutant director Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper is unlike other films of the genre that we have seen and loved, from Shoojit Sircar’s Piku to Florian Zeller’s The Father. Scrapper is an odd, fey, cranky, capricious dive into a troubled relationship. We are taken deep into the odd bonding between a daughter who has never known a father, and a man who is failed as a father but is eager to learn the ropes of parenting from scratch.

All this would probably create the impression of a grand, dramatic tearjerker. This, Scrapper would hate to be. It is a lean often mean tale told with vinegary shots of humour and irony. The very idea of a 12-year-old...

Meet Hollywood’s New It Boy
Image
There’s a certain fan interaction that has been stuck in Harris Dickinson’s mind.

To be sure, Dickinson has been having more of these encounters recently, with his seductive role in Babygirl opening the door to a very specific type of attention. Women — often older women — approach the 28-year-old actor to offer explicit rundowns of their sexual desires. Dickinson is too embarrassed to repeat most of these but says many involve his now- signature utterance from the movie: “Good girl.”

But this morning Dickinson is thinking about an interaction that happened before Babygirl‘s release, at an L.A. grocery store at least a year ago. A fan approached him and asked, “Are you in that model movie?” — a reference to 2022’s Triangle of Sadness, in which Dickinson plays a male model on a doomed luxury yacht cruise. Dickinson readied himself for the kind of praise that usually follows such questions.

Harris Dickinson Responds to Beatles Biopic Casting Rumors
Image
For months, speculation has surrounded Harris Dickinson's potential involvement in Sam Mendes' upcoming quartet of films about The Beatles. Rumors have circulated that Dickinson will portray the late John Lennon for Mendes' ambitious project. The director, whose filmography includes acclaimed features such as American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Skyfall, and 1917, is set to direct four individual biopics, each centered around one of the members of the legendary rock group.

During a recent conversation with Dazed about his upcoming project, the erotic thriller Babygirl, Dickinson addressed the rumors of his participation in Mendes' biopics. And while he's not saying "no," he's also not saying "yes."

"There's nothing I can say about that; it might not be true, it might be, I don't know... there's a speculation culture."

Additional names mentioned as potential cast members are Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Charlie Rowe or Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

5 Actors Who Can Replace Christian Bale As American Psycho's Patrick Bateman
Image
Now that we know "Call Me By Your Name" and "Challengers" director Luca Guadagnino is making his own version of "American Psycho" — one that's based on Bret Easton Ellis' novel, not the 2000 movie helmed by writer-director Mary Harron — the world is waiting to see who Guadagnino and his team choose to play this generation's Patrick Bateman. I'm eminently unqualified to make this decision — for one thing, I'm not a casting director, and also, nobody asked me — but I definitely have ideas.

Here's one: Guadagnino could gender-flip the role and cast Zendaya, his "Challengers" lead who proved, throughout the tennis drama, that she can definitely play an apex predator. If she's not available, Margaret Qualley could probably make a meal out of the role. If we're sticking with guys, there are some great options who have simply aged out of the role; Robert Pattinson and Penn Badgley could both bring something quite excellent to Patrick,...

One Shot invites close readings of the basic unit of film grammar.Beach Rats.In the sanctuary of a church, Frankie (Harris Dickinson) watches his younger sister, Carla, shares a few words about their late father. “If my dad were here with us today,” Carla says, her voice adolescent and bright amid the grief of her father's funeral, “he’d want everyone to be happy.” Happiness: what does happiness mean to Frankie, whose eyes always appear alert but startled, feigning haughtiness, belying fear? Here, the camera is a gentle companion, nestling in to peer over Frankie’s shoulder, moving with his hand as he reaches for a laminated prayer card of Saint Sebastian from the church pew. Frankie contemplates the card, his thumb moving over Sebastian, who peers up to a hopeless sun as he bleeds out, body shot full of arrows. With our eyes on his hands, we wonder what Frankie is thinking about,...

Sam Mendes Has Reportedly Found the Stars of his Four Beatles Biopics
Image
Sam Mendes is undoubtedly one of the best filmmakers of our times. Among his many hit films are American Beauty (1999), which earned him the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Director, then Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), the James Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), and the critically acclaimed war film 1917 (2019). He also made Empire of Light in 2022 but has not been active since. Yet, earlier this year, it was reported that Mendes was working on an ambitious four-film project related to arguably the best band ever – The Beatles!

Mandes is working on four individual biopics, each dedicated to one member of the famous group – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. All four movies are currently planned for a 2027 release, which demonstrates just how big this project is. But this is old news. What we have for you here is some important casting information,...

‘Motel Destino’ Review: Sex and Nihilism All the Time in Karim Aïnouz’s Neon Collision of ‘Crash’ and ‘Body Heat’
Image
Nihilism and neon-popped lust collide in Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz’s Portuguese-language “Motel Destino,” set in a love motel so sordid that lay tourists should best avoid it, and only criminals and castaways are likely to check in. The “Invisible Life” director’s steamy psychosexual thriller set in the sweatiest armpit of the equator speaks melodrama and noir but with a Brazilian accent, Aïnouz returning to his home state of Ceará to shoot on his own turf for the first time in five years. The writer/director lifts from classics such as Lawrence Kasdan’s “Body Heat” and Billy Wilder’s “Double Indemnity” but also from ‘70s Brazilian sex comedies to tell a perverse yarn of extramarital betrayal turned murderous. But while the pre-“Body Heat” noirs he’s channeling could only suggest rather than spell out sex, Aïnouz goes graphic — and relentlessly — in an arthouse-only erotic genre piece that...

Carol Kane and Jason Schwartzman Comedy ‘Between the Temples’ Sells to Sony Pictures Classics After Sundance Premiere
Image
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all rights worldwide to “Between the Temples,” a comedy with Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane that earned strong reviews when it debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Nathan Silver, the film follows a forty-something cantor who is at a personal and professional crossroads. That’s when his grade-school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student, prompting the pair to form an unusual connection.

In a positive notice, Variety‘s Guy Lodge wrote, “Buoyed by the unlikely chemistry between its two stars, this alternately raucous and tender ‘Harold and Maude’ riff is the warmest work to date from microbudget auteur Nathan Silver.”

“Between the Temples” will have its international debut at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section. Schwartzman’s credits include “Rushmore,” “Asteroid City” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Kane is the Oscar-nominated star...

Realm Of Satan - Amber Wilkinson - 18846
Scott Cummings in Realm of Satan (2024)
Director Scott Cummings has an editing background, having cut together indie treats including Beach Rats, Monsters And Men and Never Rarely Sometimes Always, so it’s fair to say he knows a fair bit about the importance of the connection and juxtaposition between images and, by extension, between moods. He brings this playfully to the fore in this hybrid documentary - made “in collaboration with” the Church of Satan, which offers snapshots from the daily lives of your average (and perhaps less than average) Satanist, that span from the domestic to the dramatic. Participants range all the way up to the current high priest and high priestess of the church.

The Devil, you might say, is in the details, as in various households, Church of Satan paraphernalia including skulls and the like, nestles alongside a Playbill for Phantom of the Opera or an Elvis statuette. Elsewhere a goat plate appears to be.

James Gunn
Here’s What’s Leaving HBO Max in March 2023
James Gunn
A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).

You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”

Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

HBO Max New Releases: March 2023
Image
There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Nearly three years ago, “Parasite” swept awards season. Bong Joon-ho’s sardonic masterpiece followed the Kim family, a tribe of basement-dwelling con artists who wormed their way into a wealthy household and wound up with blood on their hands. Perhaps as a direct result, we now find ourselves in an awards season glutted with eat-the-rich narratives. That might be fun — even revolutionary — if these films had more to offer than shallow drollery.

Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness,” Mark Mylod’s “The Menu” and Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion” are all stacked with prime talent and featured among this year’s For Your Consideration fodder, and all three films lampoon the garishly wealthy. But where “Parasite” used fleshed-out commonfolk as foils to the heinous elite, today’s films are more interested in making a spectacle of wealth than they are in actually developing their working class heroes.

“Glass Onion” is perhaps the worst offender,...

The first look at A24’s upcoming wrestling drama “The Iron Claw” has been revealed, showcasing Zac Efron’s bulked-up physique as the Golden Warrior, aka Kevin Von Erich. “The Iron Claw” is a biographical film about the wrestling dynasty that was the Von Erich family, and co-stars “The Bear” leading man Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich and “Beach Rats” actor Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich.

In the first look, Efron’s muscular build is highlighted as he is seen mid-air, stunning his opponent with a striking kick move. Efron recently attracted social media attention when on-set photos revealed his bowl-cut hairdo, matching the style and era of the real Von Erich. Though Von Erich isn’t involved much with the upcoming film, he recently gave some high praise to Efron through TMZ, telling them: “I didn’t ever look that good. He looked great though, he must be working really hard.

Harris Does Dallas: Dickinson Gets into the Ring with Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw”
Image
For those who might have noticed on the Triangle of Sadness press day in Cannes this past May, one of the players in Ruben Ostlund’s Palme d’Or winner was sporting a distinctive coiffe. We believe that Harris Dickinson might have already been in hair follicle prep mode for his next outing. Deadline reports that the next wrestler to join Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw will be the British actor. Dickinson, has been stringing together some roles in indie projects such as Eliza Hittman’s Beach Rats and Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir: Part II, will play David Von Erich, who was a younger brother (not by much) to Kevin Von Erich – Zac Efron.…...

‘Triangle of Sadness’ Trailer: Try and Stomach the Gross-Out Satire That Won Cannes and Shocked Viewers
Image
The first trailer for Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” is now online to watch, if you can stomach it. The satirical dark comedy won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Östlund, who first broke out with his comedy “Force Majeur,” now has two Palme d’Or wins under his belt thanks to “Triangle of Sadness” and his 2017 satire “The Square.” The new film marks Östlund’s first English-language feature.

“Triangle of Sadness” stars “Beach Rats” and “The Kingsman” actor Harris Dickinson as an aspiring model who gets the chance to vacation aboard a luxury yacht after his influencer girlfriend wins them a free trip. Woody Harrelson plays the yacht’s alcoholic captain. The yacht is full of pretentious and snobby guests who make up the 1, but they all get their comeuppance when the trip takes a dark turn.

At the Cannes Film Festival in May,...

The big new Warner Bros. release on HBO and HBO Max this month is “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which actually debuted on the HBO Max streaming service on May 30. The third film in the Wizarding World prequel franchise first hit theaters in April, and is now available to stream in 4K.

There’s also the updated version of “Father of the Bride” premiering on June 16, while a pair of noteworthy documentaries are coming on the early side this month: “The Janes” premieres June 8 and follows unlikely outlaws in pre-Roe v. HBO Max New Releases: June 2022
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.

Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.

Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Harris Dickinson Explores the Ties That Bind a Young Soldier On His Last Night of Freedom in Riveting ‘2003’
Image
Harris Dickinson joins Dn today with the premiere of his Devisio Pictures produced film 2003, a short that chronicles a young soldier’s final day before deployment. The film is a gripping drama centring around the soldier’s uncomfortable if well-intentioned relationship with his father. The actor-turned-director – known for his nuanced performances in films by Xavier Dolan, Eliza Hittman and Joanna Hogg, and previously seen on our pages in a range of films such as Beach Rats, County Lines, and BIFA winning short Femme – brings an intuitive care to the performances of his own actors whose relationships in the film feel impressively well-rounded and complex. Dickinson also employed established Cinematographer Robbie Ryan to shoot the film on 16mm, giving the short a grainy texture which perfectly situates it in its early 00s setting. You can watch 2003 in its entirety below, after which we get into an in-depth chat with Dickinson where...

Jessica Biel in Candy: Morte in Texas (2022)
There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.

Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ Trailer Features Daisy Edgar-Jones and New Taylor Swift Song
Image
Sony has released a new trailer for “Where the Crawdads Sing,” an upcoming thriller set to hit theaters July 15. The film, which is based off the novel of the same name by Delia Owens, follows Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones) — a young woman from the North Carolina marshes who becomes a suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with.

“I fell so deeply in love with the world that Delia created, she has such a poetry to her writing. And her characters are so incredibly special, and deep and complex — particularly Kya, of course,” said Edgar-Jones in a video post promoting the film on “Where the Crawdads Sing’s” Instagram last February. “I would describe Kya as fiercely resilient, wonderfully curious and strong. And I just feel so privileged and excited to be playing her.”
