But nothing could be as good as the first two

If, like me, you agree that the first two Paddington films are amongst the greatest films ever made this will be both an enjoyable essential but also a disappointment.

Because it's not about Paddington adapting to living with a family in London or how a normal family adapts to living with a bear, it loses its original charm and certainly its humour. This is just another jungle adventure movie...but with a bear. It has a different feel about it - more sentimental and noticeably not as funny. Whereas the first two were hilarious to a decrepit old Marx Brothers fan like me, this one is definitely more of a family film clearly aimed at children.

I could say we need more of the Brown family and of their neighbours.....I could also say we need Sally Hawkins but what's the point. We had all that in the first two and since they were...dare I say, perfect, there'd be no point trying to copy them.

So yes, this is different, it's horribly over-sentimental at times and nothing like as funny but it's still Paddington. Routine family fun rather than hilarious quirky cuteness.

Surprisingly flat

The first two Paddington films were great fun and full of charm, alongside some superb cameos. This film never quite gets going and you wonder what happened to the scriptwriters. Generally the performances are a bit clunky or barely fleshed out, and there are precious few laughs.

A real shame as Paddington 2 in particular was a gem, mostly driven by Hugh Grant being superb but ably supported by the prison crew. Paddington 3 is very run of the mill by comparison... it needed a much better script, fleshed out characters and funnier action scenes. An hour after watching it, you will perhaps hardly remember it at all....

Passable family entertainment but not a patch on the first two great 'Paddingtons'

The first two 'Paddingtons' were superb 'family fun' films - but the third, "Paddington In Peru", without writer / director Paul King or London as its location, is not. The titular bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) returns to his native Peru with adoptive family Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer (replacing Sally Hawkins (shame)), Julie Walters, & kids - where they're pulled into a gold-hunting jungle adventure with the likes of Olivia Colman & Antonio Banderas. Old faves like Hugh Grant & Joel Fry cameo, and first-time director Dougal Wilson does fine, but nothing lifts the tame screenplay from Mark Burton, Jon Foster, & James Lamont. It's passable... but not a REAL 'Paddington'.

Overall flat...but the last act leaves you smiling

All the key plot points and characters are there. But the script seems underdeveloped which meant the characters were more like finger puppets being paraded through each scene. Most of the time if felt like the cast were just waiting for their lines to be written.

The pace was also too slow which would have been helped by some good writing and perhaps editing.

The overall story is good and the last act certainly pulls at the heartstrings which leaves you feeling a certain degree of satisfaction.

I wished the script had more wit and charm to pump some life into the characters. The movie is like an uninflected doll. If it had air pumped into it, it would have come fully to life!

Weakest of the Trilogy

Paddington in Peru is an ok movie that could have been so much more due to its international setting but it the weakest of the three movies in my books.

Slow buildup in the first act does significant damage to the well crafted narrative of the movie. Funny antics of our titular Bear does save the grace but what takes the cake is the performance of Antonio Banderas who seems to have a ball with his character.

The third act is the saving grace as the lovable family finally catches up in the majestic mountains of Machu Picchu and the Inca civilization.

However, I feel the audience were expecting more of silly adventure in the Peruvian Jungle and the Amazon than it turned out to be.

Disappointing

I was quite disappointed by this movie. That's maybe a bit harsh because, taken on it's own merits, this is a quite adequate, perhaps even superior, family film. The trouble is that it really falls far short of the whimsy, the subtle humor, the cleverness of the previous two previous superlative Paddington movies.

It's hard to say why this is. I suspect it's because this is the first Paddington movie to take the story out of London and away from all those quirky British characters and backgrounds that enriched the previous movies and made them sparkle. Instead of finding adventure and excitement in the ordinary things that surround us, this movie puts Paddington and the Brown family into a already existing exotic adventure location. Jim Broadbent gets a few minutes of screen time and Hugh Grant makes a welcome appearance, but neither of them are given anything to do that could add a touch of magic, though I suspect they were included to do just that.

The actors do a good job. Antonio Banderas is great in his role. Olivia Colman is a great actress and adept at comedy, but she's pretty bland here. The young lady who plays Banderas' daughter also fails to sparkle, but that's more a fault with her dull character more than her acting.

There is one musical number towards the beginning that could have been left out and there is far too much maudlin sentimentality in the movie as a whole.

Family groups will enjoy this movie I have no doubt. If you're looking for the magic that made the first two Paddington movies so special, however, you will be disappointed.

3rd time not so lucky

Number 3 in the franchise looked amazing in the trailer

My favourite part was Hugh Grant's cameo piece don't miss it

Both Paddington 1 & 2 were brilliant so this had a lot to live up to , sadly it's not as good as the other 2 but it's not either

The theme was family & growing up and leaving the nest wherever that nest was , it was nice to see 75% of the actors reprise their role & the loss of the original mother to Emily Mortimer didn't affect the story in any way

The search for El Dorado was a great inclusion. It added tension with the goodies & the baddies with high grants character safely locked away

It was good but it wasn't brilliant let's hope part 4 is better

Pad. A 6/10.

Weakest of the three but still delightful

Paddington in Peru is comfortably the weakest of the trilogy with the absence of Paul King and Simon Farnaby definitely being felt but this is still a delightful third instalment that loses none of the heart and brings everything set up in the first act to a neat conclusion thanks to another satisfying third act. It's a consistently funny adventure which never forgets the immigrant story at the heart of this as Paddington struggles to balance his past and future.

Ben Whishaw remains endlessly precious with another pitch perfect vocal performance so Paddington continues to be a much needed cinematic balm. Hugh Bonneville is really funny as he tries to be more courageous and Emily Mortimer is a worthy replacement even if Sally Hawkins is missed. Antonio Banderas gets to do everything Dial of Destiny stopped him doing, having a ball whilst he does it and Olivia Colman as a suspicious singing nun is another big highlight.

Dougal Wilson's direction brings enough whimsy through carrying over ideas from the predecessors and some new inventive ones as well as a few well placed references to other films. There's a lot of slapstick here as usual and it always escalates in unexpected ways. The CGI is pushed like never before, making it all the more impressive that the effects that bring Paddington to life rarely falter despite the sheer amount of CG bears this time.

Easygoing fun

Paddington in Peru is a delightful addition to the beloved Paddington franchise, offering a heartwarming adventure that's perfect for family viewing. The film follows the iconic bear as he embarks on a series of gentle escapades from London to the spectacular landscapes of Peru, where he reconnects with his roots. As with previous Paddington films, the tone is light, the humor is gentle, making it easy to watch for both kids and adults alike.

The story is simple yet engaging, designed to keep children entertained without overwhelming them. It's the kind of film that doesn't demand much from its viewers - ideal for a family movie night when you're just looking to relax and enjoy something wholesome.

The animation and cinematography continue to impress, with the lush landscapes of Peru offering a beautiful backdrop to Paddington's charming adventures. The characters, old and new, are endearing, and the bear's optimistic, polite nature continues to be a highlight.

While the film doesn't delve deeply into complex themes, it's a warm, simple watch that succeeds in its goal: to keep kids happy and entertained for an hour or so, with just enough charm and humor to win over adults as well. If you're looking for family entertainment that's easy to digest and reliably heartwarming, Paddington in Peru is a solid choice.

A Pleasant Surprise: Paddington 3 Wins Me Over.

We went into this film thinking it wouldn't be as good as the other two Paddington movies, especially since the reviews weren't as strong. However, my son and I ended up really enjoying it. The story was warm and heartfelt, with Paddington's charm still shining through. The film had plenty of funny moments, but also some touching scenes that caught me off guard. By the end, I even shed a tear. While it wasn't quite as perfect as the first two films, it was still a lovely watch. I'm really glad we gave it a chance. It's definitely worth seeing for anyone who loves Paddington and his adventures.

Boring story and flat script (poor bear)

The entire Peruvian escapade should have been, maybe, a third of the movie. But it dragged on as one long repetitive gag. The script lacked sparkle.

Banderas is a fine actor, but he was unsuited to the role of a comic villain. He needed something extra to make his character thrilling and threatening.

The family and Paddington were extras, taking a backseat to CGI "action" sequences that blended into each other like marmalade in a sandwich.

Even a certain cameo in the final credits couldn't add the lightness of touch and humor that gave the first two films their charm.

It begins and ends with the story and script. This was derivative of every other Disney-esque adventure, and lacked what made I and II special.

Paddington? More Like Padding-the-Runtime

This movie is far too long for the lack of substance to the story. It's cute and occasionally whacky, but it gives the vibe that they're just trying to milk the franchise rather than making a meaningful or memorable movie. This would have been cool as a 30 minute TV episode in a Paddington series, but it's definitely not movie worthy.

A good kids film typically has to have something to make it bearable for adults, especially for something so multigenerational as Paddington, and this really doesn't meet the mark. A mention of the duty free by a pensioner bear and the relatable frustration of a machine not taking your pound coin is enough to crack a small grin, but the rest of the film is just mild slapstick that appears to be deliberately scattered throughout the film when the boring has gone on a bit too long.

As films go, it'll be a great film to stick your kids in front of the TV to distract them whilst you're doing the housework, but it's not one for the family movie night.

The Weakest In The Trilogy, Paddington in Peru Lacking A Familiar Warmth

Paul King's absence is certainly felt in this third adventure with the marmalade-loving bear, but in my opinion, the more significant absence is Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Brown, she has been the heart and the permanent faces of the Brown family, and seeing a different actor take on the role felt odd, while Emily Mortimer did her best, the dynamic between the characters felt different, which slightly impacted the overall experience, that said, the biggest flaw of Paddington in Peru despite the enduring charm of Paddington, Hugh Bonneville, and the rest of the Brown family, is the main story, which i found to be the least exciting of the trilogy so far, Antonio Banderas and Carla Tous is a fine new addition while Olivia Coleman was pretty underwhelming, the Paddington movies have always been delightful, lighthearted family films that are easy to enjoy, and Paddington in Peru still carries that spirit, however, it doesn't quite match the magic of the first film or the high bar set by the second, to get the most out of it, just relax, get into the spirit, settle in with a jar of marmalade or some snacks, you'll likely enjoy it more, even if it remains the weakest of the trilogy.

Review

The third Paddington Movie has a very weak start and has symptoms of a little feverdream. There are many little moments that fell like the production wanted to fill the movie with a gag that has nothing to do with the story. Sometimes the story just moves too fast with out of nowhere decisions. But with the time the story starts to grab your attention and has some good funny moments. The story has good parts with a good timing but there are also scenes that feel just to long, like as mentioned in the beginning feels just like the existence is to fill to get to a specific length. The end with their clips is a good ending wich has some running Gags wich are good used but weren't necessary.

A perfectly pleasant Peruvian adventure.

'Paddington in Peru (2024)' isn't as good as 'Paddington 2 (2017)', but it isn't as big a step down as some early reactions led me to believe. For the most part, this is still an entertaining and delightfully polite experience that's as pleasant as it is brisk. Although the more standard adventure narrative is less idiosyncratic than the vignette approach of the first two pictures, it still works well enough in this context and allows its lovable characters to continue to charm even as they're subjected to the classic sequel thing of being taken out of their natural habitat to explore the as-yet-unknown origins of the main character. There are plenty of funny moments and the film is good-natured from its very first frame. It's a really nice movie, and sometimes that's all you need.

What it does lack in comparison to its predecessors is a strong emotional core. Even though a handful of its moments are moving, the piece isn't especially poignant and it isn't going to get your tear ducts working. Plus, some of its character work is rather superficial and, as my brother pointed out, almost feels like an obligatory afterthought. The narrative in general is rather conventional and follows a specific formula almost to a tee. It's fairly predictable and feels relatively generic, almost like it was retrofit for Paddington after its basic beats had already been pencilled in.

Despite its few issues, there's still more than enough to like about the feature. Its lovable cast is as strong as ever, with some delightful newcomers (Antonio Banderas and Olivia Coleman) chewing the scenery with glee whenever that's what's needed. The special effects are consistently good, believably bringing the eponymous bear to life in such a way that it's strange to think he's never actually in the same space as the other characters. When he naturally doesn't turn up at the red carpet, it feels like someone is missing. The film is light and bouncy; it truly flies by and is generally a lot of fun. It's marmalade-packed with gags, both visual and dialogue-based, and scenes of slapstick action that sweeps you off your feet. It's a really good time.

Ultimately, this is a perfectly respectable addition to its series that's well-made and enjoyable throughout. It's unfortunate that it follows 'Paddington 2 (2017)', as there's an argument to be made that's the best - or, at least, most universally appealing - picture of all time, because this is genuinely a great family film. If you're expecting the best film of all time (again) or even the second best film of all time, you'll obviously be disappointed. However, it's a rock-solid effort that's charming and entertaining in pretty much each and every scene. It's a lot better than plenty of similar fare. If you don't go in expecting a miracle, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

A perfectly pleasant film

Paddington in Peru is a fairly lovely if unremarkable film. It doesn't reach the heights of Paddington 2 of course, but is probably about on par with the first one.

With a different director at the helm, this film also takes on a different angle as it lifts the action out of London and places it in the jungles of Peru. This is probably a wise choice as it helps the film feel fresh and different compared to the other two. It also gives room for a slightly different type of story, with this one feeling perhaps more adventurous and exciting. It makes for an interesting enough story that flows pretty well and keeps a decent pace.

The humour is a bit mediocre, but it is definitely aimed more at kids so that's just reflective of my age more than anything. I do also think the emotional side is lacking a bit. I remember Paddington 2 having me in tears, but this one feels a bit more gentle.

In fact, I think that word sums this film up. It is nice and gentle. Everything from Paddington 2 is dialled down a notch or two, but it still makes for a perfectly enjoyable and pleasant experience.

Weakest in the series but still great

Paddington in Peru is a great, enjoyable film however it is the weakest out of the 3 paddington films.

It looks great on a big screen, the scenery and locations are beautiful and the CGI of the bears looks great. The acting and story are fine, nothing groundbreaking or better than the previous two films but the charm from those two are missing from this third one.

I still had a good time watching this though. It had some funny moments and it is a fun family film. It is a little silly at times which would have worked if the charm was there.

Overall, still a great film that's worth watching in the cinema.

Saw it twice - improved with age

With there being so few children's movies out, the pickings are slim when it comes to family fare. This being the case, it became necessary to see Paddington Bear a second time.

I must say that, with the second viewing, I gained an appreciation for the film that I didn't have the first time around. Though it was certainly removed from its London setting, and taken all the way to Peru, several of the individual performances are really quite remarkable - plus a musical number with nuns, and if that doesn't remind you of The Sound of Music, the Reverend Mother singing and swirling on a meadowy mountaintop certainly will.

We see a little more of Paddington's depth. We meet a nun who seems pitch perfect. And we meet Antonio Banderas playing more than one role, hilariously.

So go! But go twice.

Paddington in Peru

With "Paddington" now happily ensconced with the "Brown" family, and replete with his own British passport, all is going swimmingly until he gets a letter from distant Peru. The mother superior of the retirement home for bears (Olivia Colman) is concerned that "Aunt Lucy" is losing the plot a bit. Conscious that they are gradually drifting apart, mum "Mary" (Emily Mortimer) decides that what they all need is the excitement of a trip - so off they head to the jungle. That's where they encounter "Capt. Cabot" (Antonio Banderas) who runs a local river boat with his daughter "Gina" (Cala Tous) and who agrees to take them on their cruise. They arrive at their destination only to discover that the elderly bear has gone missing and they are soon amidst some mischievous machinations that might take them on a perilous journey to the famed El Dorado. Thing is, of course, with a legendary treasure to be found, "Paddington" isn't quite sure whom he can trust as the trail leads him deeper and deeper into the wilderness! It's a fun adventure this one but it is a bit slow, the humour isn't so plentiful and the plot is a little derivative with not enough bear and too much of "Jungle Cruise" (2021) meets "Sound of Music" (1965) to it. I thought Banderas and Colman rather hammed it all up a bit and there also wasn't quite the cosiness of the family-led escapades with much less opportunity for Dame Julie Walters to get actively involved. The narrative is all just a bit disjointed without the charm of the two earlier cinema outings for Michael Bond's character. It's still a watchable and enjoyable enough family film, but I am not sure I shall recall it for long. Stick around for the credits - there's a nice wee cameo in there from you know who.

Flat and tedious

Whereas the first two were charming, witty, clever, funny, heart-warming,original, imaginative and inspirational this one relies on re-hashing old jokes and frenzied rushing about. The Browns are irrelevant passengers and the cast seem to know it. Their lines are mostly explaining the already obvious plot - Mrs Brown is limited to a few 'yes', 'no' and 'aah Paddington' so I wonder if Sally Hawkins read the script and said 'no thanks'?

Paddington works because in London his kindness, honesty and straightforwardness dissolve the cynicism of modern life but there is no place for that here, just a few platitudes stuck on the end. There isn't even really a developed villain, just a very obvious, half- hearted attempt.

Attempts at humour and characterisation are lame, relying on the obvious rather than the well-observed little details of the first two, as the action rushes on from one superficial scene to another.

Really disappointing. There was only once the briefest of giggles from one small child in the cinema, and tellingly no reaction or chatter at the end from anyone. I don't know how they made Paddington boring but we couldn't wait for it to finish.

Just fine

A jungle adventure gives variety to the franchise but it's safe & typical. The plot takes too long to start moving but has good mystery & hijinks. A few touching moments on family & home yet doesn't meet its potential.

A familiar story without losing the charm of Paddington

The third installment of one of the most consistent family sagas of recent times. Despite having a change in its direction and its scriptwriters, it continues to have the charm of a truly adorable character, although it should be mentioned that it feels less irreverent to have its more childish side.

An adventure we've seen before.

This time, Paddington embarks on a journey that we are usually used to when we are offered a family adventure in the jungle. However, the charisma of this bear works in a pleasant way that allows this usual story to become a very entertaining pastime that leaves the satisfaction of being in front of a family film that meets all the expectations it promises and does not deliver anything that it is not willing to provide. Characters that are found, predictable villains and family love turn this adventure in Peru of Paddington into a pastime that generates entertainment and funny moments with a couple of genuine laughs.

It is a family film with messages for the little ones as always.

While the two previous installments were a pleasant surprise thanks to their irreverence, this new direction that the saga is taking also works, as it remains charming in its essence, which allows the affection for this Bear not to be lost, even if it decides to be a little more familiar than usual. In any case, its director also allows herself to have her moments of irreverence, even if they are more sporadic, which allow us to remember the older ones in those moments. The premise of family and love is still present and focused with messages for the little ones in an adorable and friendly way that allows them to also enjoy an entertaining adventure in all its contexts.

Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas join forces.

With its original cast still maintaining the charm of the Brown family as a great starting point, the additions of Antonio Banderas and Olivia Colman add mind-blowing moments to freshen up the third installment and are the ones who steal the show with their funny interactions and calculated dialogue. Colman as a nun and Banderas as a treasure hunter are real successes in this family adventure.

Conclusion.

A saga that remains entertaining and, despite the change in direction and creation, maintains the joy of a character created with love for everyone. Although we are facing a story that is already known and somewhat trite, it has its moments that make it unique and better than others. Although it does not surpass its first two installments, it is a worthy third installment for a saga that is always fun to watch with the family.
