Easy to watch.

Eighty minutes of amusing comedy drama, don't expect major laughs and don't hope for any great depth, what you have here is just an easy to watch nice movie. It has an almost old fashioned vibe about it, which I liked.

Jeff Garlin is very good in the role, he's amusing and likeable. I wonder if they were eyeing up a series from this?

How gorgeous is that dog! 6/10.

Netflix, please tell me you're kidding

This pathetic Netflix original makes me wonder if they're running low on product.

"Handsome" is a murder mystery starring Jeff Garlin (who also co-wrote and directed). It concerns the murder of a neighbor's babysitter. The murderer tells you who he is before the actual story starts - don't ask.

This film tried to be wacky and funny, but it wasn't. The characterizations and the dialogue went too far so that instead of wacky and offbeat, it came off as forced, as if someone sat down and said, what can I throw in here to make it seem wacky and offbeat. Unfortunately, that someone was not the Coen Brothers.

There were cameos by Joe Kenda of the ID Discovery Channel and Kelly Cuoco. As far as I'm concerned, Leah Remini also had a cameo, and it was less than Kenda and Cuoco had.

Some people on this board stopped watching. I was tempted but persevered to see just how bad it could get. Verdict: Pretty bad.

No

I gave this one a chance, but I just could not watch it after 31 minutes and had to do a rare thing for me, turn it off.

Billed as a comedy, and for some it probably is funny, but I found it just bad.

I noted that Jeff Garlin wrote, directed and starred in it, well sorry Jeff, but your movie sucked.

I gave it 4 and I think that was generous.

Unfunny, boring, had to stop!

I'm always sceptical when I see the director is the writer and the main cast in his or her own film. Don't get me wrong, a director who writes his own film is one thing I really like, but he/she should not play the main character, that usually turns out really bad. And this is the case here again. I was mildly excited to see this one, Rated R, I believe, with Natasha Lyonne, which I really like, she's one underrated actress with a great film résumé, but what I got was so unfunny and just plain boring I had to stop after 20 minutes in. And I was also (little) annoyed by Jeff Garlin, his voice and his presence in all, I just couldn't stand him anymore.

I really don't get Netflix, they are able to do some nice works (Narcos, Sand Castle), and they can do this also..meh, 2/10

Funny!

Never seen any Jeff Garlin movie until this. It's a decent comedy and found it very entertaining unlike other reviewers. Jeff is a funny man in a low key kind of way and not overly out there.

Too Bad

What has happened to film making? Do the people who make movies ever look at what they produce? They can't think that what they make is good. Maybe they think people will go for anything. Back to the drawing board for a good comedy. Jeff Garlin and I have something in common,we like the Cubs and we can't act.

If you have nothing better to do...

3/15/18. Did finish watching the whole movie. Wouldn't say it was quality viewing. Story only average, as was the acting. If you have nothing better to do...

Lighthearted and Fun

I would think you either really hate this movie, or enjoy it. I would imagine there is little in between. I love Jeff Garlin. He is a raunchy free form, stand up comedian, and best known for playing Larry David's manager on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm. This role is a slight variation of that persona. He is a bit of a loner and loser in this. Even the title is funny knowing Garlin is the star, and the Directory, writer etc. He plays a Detective on the hunt to uncover the murderer of his neighbor's babysitter. The characters are strong. The comedy is stupid, but that's the point. Not much of a mystery, at all. It is an enjoyable spoof.

Perfectly slow and Very Funny!!!

From the trailer I thought this was going to be an ensemble type cop TV show where every member of the team had these wacky quirks. Happily surprised that it wasn't that, and that it wasn't a show but a movie. It was so hilariously slow and befitting the main character, every second was like a big sigh of "Is this really my life". The camera lingers on how uncomfortable he is in certain situations as everyone around him says things that are wrong, yet he's resigned to "this really is my life". It's not mean spirited at all but an observation of LA and "well it takes all types". When he asks Natasha Lyonne's character to "Do the thing" with the iPhone text?!! Now I DO want it be a show that comes on a few times a year and a new neighbor moves in next door and Natasha Lyonne meets some new witness and I sit back with some coffee and enjoy every second. I won't even get into the layers of murder mystery movie of the week spoofing that help propel the story, but knowing full well who did it is half the fun of watching everyone get there. As I'm writing this I want to watch it again right away to see one of the characters say "did you sign off on this" again and again. I don't write movie reviews ever but I wanted to help at least one person out there look past the other reviews, "take a breath" and enjoy a great movie.

Not bad Jeff Garlin, not bad

This may be Murray Goldberg's big break and he certainly could have done worse.

While nothing groundbreaking, this quirky film hits all the right notes. A gem within the film is just how well Garlin's detective subordinates are written and acted.

One word of caution: while this film does something unique and daring for a so-called mystery and reveals the killer in the opening scene. Typically films centering around solving a mystery involve characters whom are extremely perceptive or buffoons who end up being the person least suspected to solve the case. This one meets halfway; the detectives all have their respective skills and flaws, The main charm to the film isn't the crime or plot itself but simply seeing the main character go about his job and life while investigating.

Jeff Garlin is a great comedian

I love Jeff Garlin. He's a great comedian and he was great on Curb. But, I have to wonder where his mind was while writing this script. The movie is totally flat, lacks an interesting story line, and has no opportunities for even a slight chuckle. Not to mention it's boring enough to make 81 minutes feel like 3 hours. I'm sorry, I really wanted this to be good. And I really want good comedians like Jeff to be successful when they branch out and attempt to make movies. But this one is miserable.

Not funny

I gave this an opportunity, because I like comedies, I like wacky comedies, I think Netflix is doing a great job with its productions and I think Jeff Garlin have talent.

But I was able to stand just 20 minutes. After that, I just stopped before the damage were permanent and looked for other stuff to escape from the showhole.

Handsome is simply dumb, slow, absurd in a bad way and uninteresting. What is the worst fault of a comedy?. Yes: being unfunny.

the Captain interrogates his suspects

From... netflix. detectives Handsome (Jeff Garlin) and Scozzari (Natasha Lyonne) are trying to figure out who the murderer is, and they stumble bumble their way through the suspects. she sleeps with at least one of them. gathering evidence, no doubt. written and directed by Garlin, who was also Captain on Wall-E, so everytime he speaks, you think of that. small matter. it's a fun caper, as we follow the clues, but I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously. some running gags. Handsome goes down these little side roads, which are pretty funny. and Scozzari is way too honest about her body parts and sex life, which grosses him out. kind of a weird ending, but we DO find out who the murderer is. funny one minute cameo by kaley cuoco. it's all pretty good. as of today, it's rated 5.2, so there may not be more of this. the title makes it sound like they were considering making more...?

What?

Definitely in the vein of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but not as funny. I'm surprised Jeff Garlin didn't do more with this. I get the irony, the super dry humor. However, it's very predictable, and the jokes are cheap. But, it kinda grew on me, as I watched, and I see the potential for more episodes. If I have the choice, I'd rather watch CYE, but I like Jeff Garlin, so I'd probably give in and watch more if they produce a series.

Engaging

Despite stilted table read style of performances there's something to be said for this low budget picture. The comedic elements occasionally garner a laugh and the obvious lack of a powerful director allows the actors to be themselves which in and of itself has moments of surprising humor. The arc of the story sags and yet strangely, it's fun to watch.

Amazing music

The show was gently entertaining, a bit clunky, with a likable main character who is surrounded by unlikable people. Let's just say it was rough around the edges, but with good intentions.

HOWEVER, the soundtrack was amazing, jazzy and addicting. I could listen to that score all day long. Thanks, Ben Folds! You did a damn fine job.

Dark Wacky Eccentric Sexy and Funny

This seemed like a trial for a TV series in that it would fit very well into an episodic framework, oh, and it is very funny. Not everyone will find this funny just like not everyone finds Curb Your Enthusiasm to be funny, to name a previous Jeff Garlin incarnation. The humor is in the same vein as CYE where we find the lead character playing the put-upon guy in world of wacky and or eccentric characters, with the central character often being seen as schlubby by the eccentrics. Although Jeff Garlin as Gene Handsome isn't an eccentric like Larry David is in CYE, he plays in a similar setup for him to interact with, also with celebrities in bit parts, one even playing themself like in CYE. While this isn't on the same level of greatness as CYE, it is still very funny and not in the tiresome way which network TV presents in its attempts to be all things to all people, this movie is unapologetic adult humor, and I hope it does became a regular series. As for the other main parts, Natasha Lyonne steals every scene she is in as Gene Handsome's detective nympho partner, and Amy Sedaris is hilariously seductive as Gene's Lieutenant boss.

I'm confused....

I really wanted to hate this movie. I went into it thinking I would hate it. Turns out, I didn't hate it. There were a lot of really dumb attempts at humor but there were also a few that caught me by surprise because they actually landed. Pretty decent cast w/ cameos and an Adam Sandler level of humor. Fine for late night, wanting to watch something dumb in the background of doing something else - which was my exact situation.
