Summer of 84

Richard Stanley
Richard Stanley is writing Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3
Richard Stanley
A year has gone by since we heard that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3 was moving ahead. It was said that this sequel will have a bigger budget than either of its predecessors, and “will introduce new characters from the original Winnie-the-Pooh stories, including Rabbit, the heffalumps and the woozles.” Now, Variety has learned who’s writing the screenplay – and it’s quite an unexpected choice. The writer of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3 is Richard Stanley, the filmmaker known for writing and directing Hardware, writing and directing Dust Devil, and co-writing and almost directing The Island of Dr. Moreau, but getting fired and replaced by director John Frankenheimer four days into production. Stanley appeared to be making a long-awaited comeback with his 2019 H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space, but then came multiple domestic violence allegations and a libel lawsuit against his accusers.

The news comes ahead of the project’s bow at the opening pitch session at Frontières on July 23rd. Holi Womb unfolds at a holistic retreat in Poland for single mothers-to-be, where pregnant Grace starts experiencing distressing hallucinations and noticing the strange behavior of the staff. Anouk's brother, Yoann-Karl Whissell (Whissell Films), also part of Rkss, is on board as a producer. Maja Jacob (Maja Jacob Films) and Benoit Beaulieu (Slykid) join them. Mongrel Media Boards Anouk Whissell’s ‘Holi Womb’ Ahead of Its Debut at Fantasia’s Frontières Co-Production Market (Exclusive)
Image
Psychological horror project “Holi Womb,” from Montreal writer-director Anouk Whissell, famed for her part in collective Rkss (“Turbo Kid”), has been picked up by Mongrel Media for Canadian distribution. The acquisition comes ahead of the project’s bow at the opening pitch session on July 23, of the Fantasia International Film Festival’s Frontières Co-Production Market.

“With ‘Turbo Kid’ and ‘Summer of 84,’ Anouk showed she could play in genre with wit and precision,” Mongrel Media co-president Andrew Frank told Variety. “‘Holi Womb’ is a bold leap – a fierce, unapologetically feminist vision that reclaims body horror with brains, blood and beauty.”

The second feature collaboration of Whissell and New Brunswick-based producer Maja Jacob, “Holi” unfolds at a holistic retreat in Poland for single mothers-to-be, where pregnant Grace starts experiencing distressing hallucinations and noticing the strange behavior of the staff.

The project, which has secured development funding from Telefilm Canada, was conceived...

Wake Up (2025) Movie Review: A Cynical Slasher That Is Entirely Toothless and Hollow
Anouk Whissell on set of Wake Up
The Canadian filmmaking team of Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell – popularly known as Roadkill Superstars (Rkss) jump out of their nostalgia-fueled narratives in “Turbo Kid” (2015) and “Summer of 84” (2018) for a more grounded and contemporary setting in “Wake Up.” Teenagers are still at the center of their tale, but the shift, which is aided by Alberto Marini’s pointless script, doesn’t lead to any concrete takeaway.

Powered by Arnau Bataller’s excellent score, “Wake Up” begins with a group of Gen-z activists who identify themselves with the movie’s namesake, secretly sneaking into an Ikea-like store. Led by Ethan (Benny O. Arthur), they plan to hide in the store’s many blindspots and come out when all the employees, except the supposed unruly and lazy guards have left. Armed with spray paints and paint guns, the group’s objective is to graffiti the entire store, play some paintball on the premises,...

‘Wake Up’ Review: An Eco-Protest in an Ikea-Style Showroom Gives New Meaning to ‘Direct Action’
Image
In “Wake Up,” six young activists are determined to make a point. Instead, they wind up on the receiving end of one: stabbed, speared or otherwise impaled by the psychotic security guard at the Ikea-esque House Idea store they’ve targeted for an ecoterrorism stunt.

Conceived and executed by what remains of Rkss — the Canadian filmmaking collective behind “Turbo Kid” and “Summer of 84” — the wicked English-language thriller is much bloodier (and a lot less pretentious) than Bertrand Bonello’s “Nocturama,” the 2016 art film in which a crew of militant Parisian hipsters hid out in a posh department store after planting bombs around town. There, the young anarchists spent the night ransacking the newly renovated Printemps HQ, whereas in this case, the half-dozen kids strike back at a company that pillages the rainforests to bring you unpronounceable, impossible-to-assemble Kallax shelves and Järvfjället chairs.

Named for its Elf-like gang of young radicals,...

Official Trailer for Rkss's Horror 'Wake Up' - Trapped in a Superstore
Image
"From save-the-world to survive-the-night." Blue Fox Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Wake Up, the latest feature made by the Canadian filmmaker collective known as "Rkss". These genre filmmakers are also behind the indie horror hits Turbo Kid, Summer of 84, and We Are Zombies before this film - which premiered back in 2023 at the Fantastic Fest and Sitges Film Festivals. It's finally getting a theatrical release in the US + Canada starting in April this year. In an attempt to draw attention to the environmental crisis, young activists decide to invade and vandalize a furniture store. The protest quickly turns into a massacre when they find themselves trapped inside this place with a hunting-obsessed night guard going after them. Wake Up stars Turlough Convery, Benny O. Arthur, Alessia Yoko Fontana, Jacqueline Moré, Kyle Scudder, Thomas Gould, Charlotte Stoiber, and Aidan O'Hare. "We are all animals.

Scott Chambers gives info on Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3 and Alice the Mad
Image
We had heard that director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Jeffrey Chambers were planning to create a cinematic universe with the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey films and other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung. Then, Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios officially announced that this cinematic universe, which is being referred to as The Twisted Childhood Universe, is building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, which will be released in 2025. Chambers has said that the Mad Hatter will be one of the “worst of the worst” in Poohniverse, and during an interview with Screen Rant he took a moment to talk about the Mad Hatter horror movie Alice the Mad, as well as the upcoming Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3 – which is actually a Tigger solo movie!

This 2018 Horror Movie Combines the Thrill of a Serial Killer Hunt With '80s Nostalgia
Image
“Even serial killers have to live next to somebody” is the hook Summer of 84 uses to draw us in, as the inquisitive Davey (Graham Verchere) rides along his neighborhood on a bicycle, enigmatically gazing at cookie-cutter lawns and their toothy-grinned residents. Unfortunately for this serial killer mystery, works like Rear Window and its countless homages/parodies have already beat to death the idea of staring into your neighbors' windows with binoculars and suspecting them of doing unsavory acts behind closed doors. But just because Summer of 84's intended hook doesn't reel us in, doesn't mean you should pass over it. What actually makes this film exciting is that it feeds us a sweet (albeit slightly twisted) ‘80s childhood fantasy then crushes it with stark realism.

We Are Zombies trailer: comedy based on The Zombies That Ate the World coming from Turbo Kid directors Rkss
Image
Nine years ago, we heard that producer Pierre Spengler was teaming with French comic book publisher Humanoids to bring adaptations of some of their properties to the screen. Spengler got the filmmaking trio of Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell, and Francois Simard, a.k.a. Rkss, to sign on to make the adaptation of Jerry Frissen and Guy Davis’s futuristic zombie spoof The Zombies That Ate the World… and back in 2022, the project finally made it into production under the title We Are Zombies! The movie is now set to be released through the Screambox streaming service on August 13th – and with that date just a couple weeks away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The story of We Are Zombies is set in a city breeding non-cannibal zombies who are considered “living-impaired.” The offbeat comedic plot follows three slackers looking to...

10 Underseen Serial Killer Movies You Probably Haven't Heard Of
Image
Summer of 84 brings serial killer horror to a nostalgic 80s backdrop, creating a chilling modern take on a classic concept. Frailty adds religious fervor to the murder mystery genre, crafting a tense thriller with a creative twist ending. M, a classic from 1931, remains a smartly-produced, influential film chronicling the hunt for a child murderer.

Serial killers are a popular topic in movies, but not every great film using them as subject matter is as widely seen as it may deserve. The morbid fascination with repeat murderers is something of a staple in cinema, with both past hits and modern classics like the recently-released Longlegs featuring serial killers prominently. But there are plenty of incredible films centered on the topic that have somehow evaded popularity, despite the excellence with which they portray human killers.

It goes without saying that many serial killer films fall into the genre of horror, with...

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 reaches VOD later this month
Image
Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023… and sure, the movie racked up the Razzies, but it’s money that matters, and that’s why Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 was made and given a theatrical release earlier this year. We know the Australia-based company Umbrella Entertainment will be giving the film a special edition Blu-ray release next month, and now it has been announced (via Collider) that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 will be receiving a VOD release in the United States on June 26th!

A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, and that’s how Frake-Waterfield was able to make these movies happen, no permission required.

Jacqueline Moré, Kyle Scudder, Tom Gould, Alessia Yoko Fontana, Charlotte Stoiber, Aidan O'Hare, Benny O. Arthur, and Turlough Convery in Wake Up (2023)
French Canadian directing trio Rkss are back with new movie Wake Up, and Deadline reports this afternoon that Blue Fox Entertainment has picked up the North American rights.

Hollywood Legend Phil Tippett, Rkss’ Anouk Whissell Bring Brand New Projects to Powerful, Rangy Cannes Frontières Selection (Exclusive)
Image
“Sentinel,” by Hollywood legend Phil Tippett, and “Sister Inconnue,” the first solo directorial outing of Rkss’ Anouk Whissell, cold well be two highlights at a 2024 Cannes Frontières Platform that looks set to underscore the robust range of genre as it is embraced by Hollywood, big independents, horror devotees and auteurs alike.

Creator of creatures for “Star Wars” and “Jurassic Park,” Tippett may have terrified more people than anybody alive. If a teaser is anything to go by, “Sentinel,” a project, may well pick up on the style of 2021’s experimental and nightmarish stop motion/animation “Mad God.”

“Sentinel” features a battleground reminiscent of WWI hellish horror, giant bugs echoing “Starship Troopers,” Tippett’s last big job, attack droids and the statuesque figures of Osiris, Horus and Anubis, the last of which saves the hero, the gas-masked Sentinel, from a gruesome battlefield.

Sure to be a huge draw, an expanded version...

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3 is a go with a bigger budget, Rabbit, heffalumps, and woozles

We already knew that there’s going to be another installment in the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, because it was announced earlier this month that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 (which is now on the last day of its three-day theatrical run) a part of a cinematic universe with other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, and it’s building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, which will be released in 2025. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood & Honey 2 Review — Horror Sequel Is Mean & (Almost) Better In Every Way
Image
A better script and character focus in Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 lead to an improved overall tone and storytelling experience. The larger budget for the sequel allows for more gruesome kills, better production design, and decent CGI effects, enhancing the terror factor. Despite some pacing issues and balancing challenges, the sequel reflects a step in the right direction for the franchise, with lessons learned from past mistakes.

Following the viral release of its predecessor, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield made many promises about his plans to make Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2. A bigger budget and more recognizable characters were some of the more notable of his desire to build on the novel concept of the 2023 slasher, but the most important of them all was a drastic improvement over it. While he may not have crafted a cinematic masterpiece, the sequel certainly shows a lot of lessons were taken to heart from the original,...

Frightfest Glasgow 2024: ‘Wake Up’ Review
Image
Stars: Turlough Convery, Benny O. Arthur, Jacqueline Moré, Tom Gould, Alessia Yoko Fontana, Kyle Scudder | Written by Alberto Marini | Directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell

From Rkss, the directorial collective behind Turbo Kid, Summer of 84 and We Are Zombies, comes Wake Up, which sees a group of young activists set out to make a political statement by vandalising a home superstore as it closes. But their plan goes terribly wrong when they become trapped inside and must face a deranged security guard with a gruesome passion for primitive hunting. As the night fills with violence and terror, a desperate fight for their lives begins.

Very similar to last year’s Glasgow Frightfest film Hunt Her Kill Her, which saw a woman hunted in a store overnight, Wake Up sees a group of Gen Z activists looking to make a statement about the practices of “House Idea” a...

Wake Up Review – Glasgow FrightFest 2024
Image
You’d be hard-pushed to find a teenager alive who wouldn’t jump at the chance to let loose in an empty Ikea, after dark. Especially when there’s paintballs and mass destruction on the cards. So it’s no surprise that Rkss stage such a fantasy, as the set-up for their Gen Z focussed somewhat-slasher; a half-baked cautionary tale on vapid activism, with a particularly gnarly killer at the helm.

The directorial collective, otherwise known as Canadian trio François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, are well-loved on the genre circuit. Heroes of ’80s pastiches Turbo Kid and Summer of 84 (the latter of which offers one of the most memorably downbeat finales of almost any horror this side of the millennium), their latest, Wake Up, is certainly more of a move towards the present. Doing away with much of the team’s stylish neon and bigger production values,...

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 trailer brings more horror to the Hundred Acre Wood
Image
Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release earlier this year – so of course we’re getting a sequel, which is going by the title Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, very soon. So soon, in fact, that a trailer for the film has made its way online today. You can check it out in the embed above!

Where To Watch Dust Sci-Fi Short Films For Free
Image
Here at /Film, we have talked quite a bit about how much we love genre-specific streaming services like Shudder or Alter, but does such a platform exist for fans of science fiction? Sure, there's always the Syfy channel on cable, but with so many people cutting cords and pivoting exclusively to streaming, you may be wondering where to find new and unique sci-fi stories. Well, may we interest you in Dust? A sister site of Alter, Dust comes from the folks at Gunpowder and Sky, the independent studio behind hits like "Summer of 84," "Tragedy Girls," "Her Smell," "Hearts Beat Loud," "Call Me Miss Cleo," and "Kobe Bryant's Dear Basketball."

A hub for the very best in sci-fi short films, Dust also has a live linear channel constantly playing from their selection of shorts, so if you don't feel like wading through the selections, you can let the service choose for you.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 image offers preview of Pooh’s new design
Image
Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release earlier this year – which means the sequel, which is going by the title Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, has a larger budget. In fact, it’s estimated to be around ten times the budget of the first movie. The filmmakers are using some of that extra money to give the creature effects an upgrade, as you can see by the look of Pooh in a recently unveiled image from the film. That image can be found at the bottom of this article.

The Hollywood Reporter got the first look at this image of Pooh, and also sat down for an interview with Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Jeffrey (who steps in front of the camera to play Christopher Robin in...

Cast Of Ride: Who Plays Who In The Hallmark Television Show
Image
"Ride" is a new Hallmark Channel show that combines the beloved family-friendly nature of the network with modern neo-Western themes and plenty of romance. The cast of "Ride" is made up of Hallmark Channel veterans, showcasing their talent in a different genre from the typical Christmas movies the network is known for. While mainstream critics may have hesitated to praise the show, audience reviews highlight its positive qualities, particularly its portrayal of a ranching family and the lighter alternative it offers compared to shows like "Yellowstone."

The cast of the Ride television show on the Hallmark Channel is an eclectic mix of talent that's instantly recognizable to fans of Hallmark's movies. Starting in 2023, Ride follows the exploits of the famous McMurray rodeo family as they try to maintain their beloved Colorado ranch following the death of the clan's matriarch. Heavily influenced by the modern neo-Western genre, Ride spices things...

Wake Up clip gives a preview of slasher from Rkss, the makers of Turbo Kid
Image
The filmmaking trio known as Rkss has previously brought us the films Turbo Kid and Summer of 84. Their latest is the slasher Wake Up, which had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas yesterday – and we not only have some reactions to the film that came out of that screening, we also have a clip from the film, courtesy of Deadline! You can watch the clip in the embed at the bottom of this article.

Written by Alberto Marini and based on an original idea by Martin Soudan, Wake Up centers on a group of hot-headed Gen Z activists who find themselves brutally hunted after they become trapped in a furniture superstore during an act of environmental protest gone wrong.

The furniture store setting reminds me of an ’80s slasher that deserves to be more popular, Hide and Go Shriek.

Wake Up stars Benny O.Arthur (the Django...

‘We Are Zombies’ Fantastic Fest Review – Zombie Comedy Oozes Charm (Among Other Things)
Image
We seem to have run the gamut of the zombie apocalypse film. Like the possession film, it’s getting to be more and more difficult for filmmakers to breathe new life into the sub-genre, with only a few managing to eke out moments of true inspiration. Enter Canadian filmmaking trio Rkss‘ horror comedy We Are Zombies, which introduces a world in which zombies exist, but do not crave brains or human flesh. In fact, depending on the circumstances of their death, they may still be fully functioning, and even have the ability to speak. Because of this, zombies are now second-class citizens given the politically correct label of “living-impaired,” with their civil rights constantly under attack. We’ve seen more benign zombie apocalypses like this in things like Warm Bodies, so it’s not as if this is completely original territory, but it’s still nice to see something different than the doom-and-gloom post-apocalyptic wasteland.

French Canadian directing trio Rkss are back with Wake Up, which World Premiered at Fantastic Fest over the weekend. Deadline shares a first-look preview clip out of the fest.

In Wake Up, which combines a strong timely message with a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse, a group of hot-headed Gen Z activists find themselves brutally hunted after they become trapped in a furniture superstore during an act of environmental protest gone wrong.

“As soon as we read the script, the core concept and the timely subject were so compelling to us, that we immediately could visualize the film and we knew we had to direct it and bring our own signature into the project,” said Rkss. “A slasher in a closed furniture store and warehouse makes an exciting playground for sure!”

Rkss —short for Roadkill Superstars— are based in Montreal, Quebec and have had their shorts and features screened around the...

We Are Zombies Review: A Slacker Comedy For The Living Impaired [Fantastic Fest 2023]
Image
In "We Are Zombies," the team behind 2015's stunning low-budget dystopia "Turbo Kid" and '80s killer-thriller "Summer of 84" asks: what if zombies were real and non-cannibalistic? Filmmaker collective Rkss uses zombies as a marginalized minority to impart social commentary in a world where they're harmless, law-abiding citizens viewed as a festering scourge. We eventually reach a bloodthirsty conclusion brimming with gonzo gore, but that's not the norm for "We Are Zombies." Instead, Rkss frames a slacker comedy around an alternate universe where walkers flip burgers and pay bus fares. It's morbidly cute and curiously endearing — even if less successful juvenile jokes sometimes hinder momentum — all leading to a ravenous third act that delivers the flesh-tearing gore horror fans crave.

The film centers on three bumbling scam artists: D&d dork Karl Neard (Alexandre Nachi), the teddy bear wrestling fan Freddy Mercks (Derek Johns), and Karl's tech wiz half-sister Maggie...

Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey’ Sequel First-Look Teases More Childhood Nightmares
Image
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the horror slasher film that earned $5.2 million at the global box office. The sequel will have a new cast, new creature designs, and a high death count, promising to be "bigger and badder" than its predecessor. The film's writer and director, Rhys Frake-Waterfield, plans to take Pooh and his friends out of the 100 Acre Wood and into the community of Ashdown for a unique and twisted plot.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed the first stills from the upcoming slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 and gets horror fans hyped for what's to come from the sequel to 2023's twisted tale.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 follows up the horror slasher Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which saw a murderous Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet go on a bloodthirsty rampage after being abandon by Christopher Robin. Though the film had a modest budget,...

10 Best Killer-Next-Door Movies Ranked
Image
There's nothing more frightening than the prospect of a murder happening right in the backyard, and Hollywood has capitalized off of this horrifying prospect with some of the best killer-next-door movies. Hollywood has always been obsessed with bad neighbors, as there's little scarier than realizing evil's made its home in the supposed safety of the suburbs. Killer neighbors make great antagonists to a movie's protagonist because whatever bad behavior they're up to always provides the main characters with a problem they're unable to get away from due to their proximity. Not only that, but the idea that a serial killer could be so close is a terrifying possibility, leading to some of the best serial killer horror movies.

There have been many movies made about annoying neighbors but the worst, of course, is when happy homeowners find themselves living next to a killer, which is the last thing anyone wants...

15 Best Teen Horror Movies Ranked
Image
Teens are one of the most integral aspects of the horror genre's audience and there's certainly no shortage of the best teen horror movies made for them or about them. The horror genre branches out into many different sub-genres, with one of the most popular being teen horror. Teen horror movies tend to feature young protagonists in the fight for their lives against a menacing serial killer, monster, ghost, or any other typical horror-movie fiend. Many are targeted specifically to a teen audience while still having universal appeal.

This is an important genre, as adults are usually equipped to deal with pressures in life, but teens are not and when their regular school and social lives are upended by a slasher killer or zombie outbreak, they are the last people anyone would expect to handle it. Of course, horror movies based on teens are not always highly regarded by critics,...

I See You Cast & Character Guide
Image
I See You has all the makings of an excellent thriller, including a cast consisting of established Hollywood stars and up-and-coming talent. The 2019 movie follows a detective investigating a mysterious disappearance while seemingly supernatural events begin to happen to his family. Following its premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival, I See You was released on VOD in the U.S. without theatrical distribution. Fortunately, I See You's true story connection and realistic nature make the movie more frightening than a typical straight-to-video horror film, and it's become a modern horror cult classic.

Critics also praised I See You, particularly in recognition of its actors, with veterans like Helen Hunt elevating the movie beyond the restrictions of the indie horror genre. Its expertly crafted narrative unfolds with unquestionable tension, and the performances from the cast help to sell every twist and turn that the movie throws at the audience.

Friday The 13th’s New Show Has Already Outdone Most Slasher Reboots
Image
The upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake has already outdone most slasher franchise re-imaginings thanks to the show's ingenious period setting. Although many slasher reboots have attempted to breathe new life into franchises that began in the 80s, few of these projects have been set during the decade itself. 80s nostalgia has contributed to the phenomenal popularity of horror shows like Stranger Things, but none of the franchise reboots that bring back the decade's slashers have been set during the period—until now.

Producer Bryan Fuller's Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake will fill in the backstory of the slasher franchise's iconic villain Jason Voorhees, and since the original movie's backstory occurred in the 50s, there is a good chance that this updated take on the franchise will be set in the 80s. While Crystal Lake may still be set in the 50s, the fact that...
