War Pony Review: An Unflinching Portrayal of Native American Life
Image
A young Oglala Lakota man and troubled boy struggle to survive on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. War Pony, winner of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival Caméra d'Or for best first feature film, is a desperate journey through the perils of poverty, crime, and exploitation. The lack of opportunities in a gritty environment forces difficult choices. The protagonists attempt to make the best of bad situations by pursuing any direction for forward progress. This unfortunately digs deeper holes from which they try to escape. War Pony evokes visceral reactions. You will be shocked and saddened with a slice of life drama that certainly pulls no punches.

23-year-old Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting) smokes weed in his old car while listening to pounding rap music. He returns home to an angry mother (Wilma Colhof). Carly (Angelique Aurora), his ex-girlfriend and mother of his oldest son (Wasose Garcia), is in jail. She wants him to bail her out.

Well, having made lifelong friends in South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation when shooting the Andrea Arnold film, “American Honey,” actress Riley Keough felt compelled to tell one of their stories in the film “War Pony.”

‘Welcome The Stranger’ Trailer: Abbey Lee, Caleb Landry Jones & Riley Keough Encounter A Mystery
It’s not always a great sign with a movie goes straight to digital, but nevertheless “Welcome The Stranger” has us intrigued. It’s not just the compelling leading trio that has caught our attention, but the film’s trailer — you’re not mishearing things, there is purposefully no dialogue, just the soundtrack.

Directed by Justin Kelly (“King Cobra,” “I Am Michael“), and starring Abbey Lee, Caleb Landry Jones and Riley Keough, the film is an eerie story about siblings, surreal visions and paranoia.

‘Welcome the Stranger’ Trailer: Riley Keough and Caleb Landry Jones Are Twisted Lovers in Justin Kelly’s Creepy New Thriller
Justin Kelly
It’s clear from the start that something is not quite right in this first trailer for Justin Kelly’s (“I Am Michael,” “King Cobra”) latest outing, “Welcome the Stranger,” a twisty (and twisted) new thriller about the limits of family bonding. The film stars Caleb Landry Jones and Abbey Lee as estranged siblings who reunite at a remote country home, before everything devolves into an unsettling and dark drama in which nothing is actually as it seems. Added bonus: Riley Keough as Jones’ girlfriend, intriguingly billed as “strange.” Strange, how?

Per the film’s official synopsis, “Alice arrives unannounced at her estranged brother Ethan’s house in an attempt to reconcile, but bizarre visions, the return of his strange girlfriend, and Alice’s paranoia and suspicion force the siblings to cling onto reality amidst mysterious circumstances.”
