Even though it's in the same "universe" as SOA, this is definitely its own show - try not to base your opinion of this show on that show.
I've noticed a trend with Sutter's work: his shows always start out good and then the characters all just basically come apart at the seams. His shows are definitely not known for happy endings. The same is true here. Season one was outstanding but, as time went on, the characters and club in general all start to unravel. You might think by watching the beginning of the series that this club will accomplish what they set out to, but those happy feelings are soon replaced with melancholy and sadness.
The last 3-4 seasons became rather dark and depressing. I wanted to root for the characters - at least some of them - but I knew this was going down a dark road. In that respect, if you enjoy that kind of thing, you definitely won't be disappointed. However, I kind of enjoy happy endings once in a while, especially with the world being how it is. If you need something uplifting, don't watch this show. But if you like gritty, dark action/drama, this might be just your thing.

Not sure why there are so many harsh reviews. For the ones trying to compare it and it's characters to SOA ... Just don't... Just because its set in the same universe with certain tie ins doesn't mean it should be compared to it. I personally love the universe Sutter created and am thrilled that he is adding to it. I do still hope that he does something with the original nine of SOA, but that is a different story. Mayans is hitting that same place for me that SOA did. Its been hard to find another show like that as SOA is my all time favorite. To the ones saying that it isn't original the way SOA was, well ... That particular concept will never be completely original again because its already been started. That said, this show does still have its own sense of originality within the same universe and is standing on its own just fine. As for all the complaining about the subtitles... I'm not exactly sure what they were expecting.... I mean, it is a Mexican biker club .... Of course they are going to be speaking Spanish at least half of the time. It would come off fake if the whole thing were done in English. Js. Same thing with the music, if it were all the same type of music used in SOA it would be out of place as well. The culture is a huge part of any show wanting to come off with as much authenticity as possible. Giving mixed types of music ties in to all of that. As to the arm being cut off during interrogation of the Samoan leader, well that guy is the Cartel. Not the Mayans, and yes... Even in real life getting caught stealing from the real Cartel is a death sentence. Period. The Mayans were just the hired muscle to escort the Cartel shipment on this side of the border. I am starting to think mostly that the people leaving bad reviews must not have been paying much attention if they couldn't even figure out the basics of what was actually taking place.
I like how they have tackled this show.
Give it a chance. Looking forward to season 2!

As someone else mentioned, seasons 1 & 2 were must watch TV, great storyline and very well acted.
Season 3 the slide began, writing went to hell and now the Season 4 premier was just horrible!
Who wrote that mess? How do they even have a job?!? It's so poorly written, terrible acting by everyone involved, and just a waste of 40 minutes.
I'll watch another episode or two, but if it continues like this it'll be yet another once great show ruined by idiot writers in Hollywood with no talent.

Started off well, so if you can find the first two seasons it's worth a look.
Third season was alright.. I've quit watching after the first few episodes of season four... didn't even finish ep. Four. The show is decreasing at an increasing rate.
Maybe what's missing is Kurt Sutter. Whatever it is, it's no longer holding my attention.

I have to say I enjoyed Mayans M. C. even more than I thought I would. First of all, Sons of Anarchy is one of my favorite shows of all-time so I was really looking forward to this spinoff. Like SoA this was created by Kurt Sutter so it has that same gritty feel to it. It balances several plots at once all the while keeping the Reyes brothers (JD Pardo and Clayton Cardenas) at the front. Much like SoA, each season continues to impress and is just as good as the other seasons. Now, while I enjoyed this show a lot it's still no where close to as good as Sons of Anarchy. I still recommend this show to everyone, especially fans of SoA, just don't compare the two.

- QuizGemma (Katey Sagal), who starred in Sons of Anarchy, appears in the pilot during the prison visitation scene, in a flashback scene.
- Curiosità sui creditiInteresting Frames found the Season 3 Opening Credit Sequence, which is essentially a montage or a laundry list of injustices committed against Latin American community.
- On June 3, 1943, sailors on shore leave from the Los Angeles Naval Reserve Armory attacked Hispanic youths as revenge for the assault of an American sailor, sparking a week-long ethnic conflict known as the "Zoot Suit Riots." The violence was not subdued until June 8, when the military issued an order forbidding servicemen to enter Los Angeles. The following day, Los Angeles banned the wearing of zoot suits.
- On May 8, 1959 the land in the Los Angeles district of Chavez Ravine was condemned, and the Mexican-American community was evicted to make way for Dodger Stadium
- Robert F. Kennedy met with Cesar Chavez to support the struggle of the Mexican Migrant Farm Labor Movement
- A juxtaposition of Nancy Reagan (wife of President Ronald Reagan) and Oliver North (USMC). Oliver North, was a top level official at the National Security Council assigned to aid in negotiations for the Contras, a fighting force that was attempting to prevent a Communist regime, the Sandinistas, from taking power in Nicaragua. His involvement led to the Iran-Contra Affair, where arms were sold to Iran in exchange for the release of American hostages being held in Lebanon, then diverting the funds from those sales to aid the Contras in their fight to overthrow the Sandinista government. Moreover, the Contras facilitated the efforts of Colombian traffickers to ship cocaine into the United States in return for financing the Nicaraguan insurgency, which led to creation of the crack cocaine drug problem. Nancy Reagan's response was simply the "Just Say No" campaign. As a final study in contrast, President Reagan fired North from his position in 1986 for allegedly acting without approval from his superiors. North testified under immunity, in front of a joint congressional committee, in 1987 that his bosses, including President Reagan himself, knew everything that was going on with the negotiations and that he never once acted without prior approval from his superiors.
