'I Am Durán' tell us a few great stories in a compelling and engaging way. If on one hand, you have the story of a boxing legend which many people may not be aware of, on the other hand, you also have the story of a country which was going though a difficult process and a figure like Roberto meant a lot to all Panamanians during that period.
The interviewees cast is really incredible and it's astonishing the way how such great names in boxing talked about Roberto and his feats.
Moreover, the great archive selection and the amazing soundtrack really help putting us in that era and to better understand how a sportsperson can have such a great impact on so many levels.
This has definitely entered my favourite documentaries list.
I saw this documentary yesterday. My Inspiration by Duran's life went up notches. On the other hand, I saw Hands of Stone by Netflix a few months back and I was disgusted by how Netflix had focused more on the Sex Lives and the out of context moments of the Great Legends Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran rather than What They Offered The World - The Best Version of Themselves in the Ring. It seems of late that more popular Online streaming platforms like Netflix are turning legends into "flawed characters who feast on violence and sex" on their in-house productions. It seems to be done in order to hold the short-time attention of their viewers to make quick money rather use the Attention Power to offer something good to the world that will give more value to these platforms. If you want a peek into the Real Example to the World set by these legends, do yourselves a favour and skip "Hands of Stone" and watch " I am Duran".
Watched 'I am Duran' recently. Having not known much about Roberto Duran, I was blown away by his story. The film is brilliantly crafted with an intense soundtrack and amazing archive footage throughout. It also has some brilliant interviews with people such as Mike Tyson, Ricky Hatton, Sly Stallone and Robert De Niro. It even features the late general Noriega. It is much more than a generic sporting biopic, the filmmakers use Duran's story to contrast with the wider social/political situation between Panama and the USA throughout the backend of last century. It's a rich and fascinating story and the final fight scene will stay with you for a long, long time. Definitely recommend this movie!!
If you ever need a people's champion type of documentary - then look no further than I Am Duran - superb film and when you see him fight Iran Barkley you will be off your seat... so emotional.
There is no doubting that Robert Duran was one of the greatest boxers of all time . He fought in an era when there was some of the greatest boxers of all time . Sugar Ray Leonard , Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns and he fought them
All . Each one of them were bigger and younger men . He was the comeback king.
This follows his boxing career mainly through that period of his life while also going into the turbulent history of Panama that was playing out at the same time .
There are vox pops from Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone but the ones that matter are the interviews with the boxers , especially those who fought him such as Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler.
Duran looks like a fun man to be around the people of Panama quite clearly love him still and this documentary highlights this perfectly.
