Irudhi Suttru (Tamil) AKA Saala Khadoos (Hindi) Review:

Sports drama revolving around coach student relationship, corrupted sports committee, Ego clash between players, rise-fall, victory- defeat, romancing coach, different levels of match, featuring aspiring sportsmanship and off course Patriotism these are the essential elements of any sports drama flick. So keeping the same formula but yet producing a refreshing film is a tough task to handle? But Director Sudha Kongara has brilliantly worked on the screenplay to keep this film solid and racy till the end. Take a bow Sudha. Excellent work. Casting: Holds important role for keeping us glued to our seats. Brilliant performances by the leads. Especially Madhavan as Prabhu (Tamil version)/Adi Tomar (Hindi version) has portrayed the role of a ruff, gritty, bitter, hard, raw and muscular coach on his 40s. Wonderful Maddy this would be one of your best performances in your career. The lead lady the boxer who comes to live the dreams of her coach is amazingly believable as an experienced actor Well done Ritika singh. Even without knowing Tamil her lip sync was much better than existing Tamil heroines. Well Supported by some known and unknown faces. Technical: Music, Cinematography and Editing are exactly resonating to the script and has in turn helped to elevate the whole movie experience. Verdict: Mary Kom, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Chakde India now Saala khadoos ! Get in for the ultimate boxing ride of this year and let's feel real sportsmanship and patriotism. Iruthi Sutru(Saala Khadoos) Whenever we come across a film directed by a woman (which is few and far between), we tend to have preconceived notions that it would either be a mouthpiece for their gender's domination or a soft mushy romance story. However with 'Irudhi Suttru' Sudha Kongara takes the viewer completely by surprise with her sports drama riding on a love story told in a raw manner which makes for a pleasurable and emotionally moving viewing experience. It isn't just Million Dollar Baby.It's also a story about sibling rivalry. We see a lot of red in boxing dramas, but here we also see bits of Grey.In some situation we feel goosebumps. Screenplay was awesome.All characters performed well.Surely it will be the another milestone for Madhavan.Worth watchable.

SCREENPLAY- The movie consists of very powerful plot and old wine in a new bottle with some unexpected twists which can lead the movie into a new level.

DIALOGUES - Dialogues of the movie is very much fresh and impactful. But the best one was

"Kaun Kehta Hai Ki Hindustanion Main Dumb Nahi Hai, Sports Main Se Politics Hatake Dekho, Gali Gali Mein Champions Milenge."

MUSIC - Music is done by the new face in tamil industry Santhosh Narayanan who haven't done justice to the songs but the songs are relevant to the situation.

ACTING - R. Madhavan is the "One Man Army" in the movie who took this script into the next level and not even a single time he has disappointed his fans in this movie. The debutante Ritika Singh is awesome with her role in the movie, the real life boxer looks very pretty and very comfortable with Madhavan but the real focus is Madhavan who is just incredible.

DRAWBACKS -

Drawback of this movie is the story, which is not a fresh one as the audience have already experienced the flavor of this type of movies before in Chak De,Mary Kom and like previous ones also in this movie the importance is given only to the coach & player.

Complaint about this movie is that the story is predictable. Yes. Even Airlift movie's story is predictable. And in case of sports based film there's mostly the same story line. "A coach/player will lose and eventually win themselves or make someone win at the end".

It's the screenplay which makes the difference here!!

Screenplay - No-nonsense and straight to the point. It deals with the characters' screen time perfect. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Direction - Narration by the director is really good. Not fast paced. But well paced. Director had brought the things required for the film very well . Be it the acting or the environment.

Acting - Ritika Singh steals the show. There aren't words to describe her performance. Only when watching the film we realize. Madhavan as usual sticks to the character and performed just perfect!! A live example for versatile acting. Other supporting characters contribute their best. Only con is that some unknown faces don't make us feel emotional at times.

Music - Soundtrack of the film as audio doesn't bring much. But when combined with the frames of the film creates magic!! Santhosh Narayanan has given one of his best works.

There are many moments in the film where the wit of the director is highlighted - be it the jokes or the twists or social issue, they have been blended in the picture smooth.

Watch it for Ritika Singh, Madhavan, Sudha, Santhosh Narayanan!!

Me and My Father watch this Movie and it was Excellent and actor Madhavan was acting like a real boxing coach and the actress Ritika Singh was acting like real boxer in the movie. My father was a former boxer he was very impressed by seeing the acting of Madhavan and everyone in this film. I hope this film must get national award after long time this is the first boxing film that impressed me and my father. All the actors in the film played their role very well. After seeing the film rocky this the first boxing film impressed me and my father. It is the best Motivational Film. I hope there is second part for this film. Thank You.

'Saala Khadoos' is A Commendable Effort by Writer-Director Sudha Kongara, which also tunes in strong performances. Its a familiar setting no doubt, but the narrative is interesting & also genuine.

'Saala Khadoos' is The story of a former boxer (R. Madhavan) who quits boxing following a fallout with the authorities over the underlying politics but goes on to coach a fisher-woman (Ritika Singh) to fulfill his dream through her.

'Saala Khadoos' is a yet another story of an Underdog's triumph, despite all the hurdles & struggles. Its fun to watch the Arrogant Khadoos Coach train an equally Fiery Student. Sunanda Raghunathan & Kongara's Screenplay isn't innovative as such, but its well-written & well-paced. Even the dialogue, are real. Kongara's Direction is commendable. Cinematography is fine. Editing is crisp. Santhosh Narayanan's Score is first-class.

Performance-Wise: R. Madhavan is terrific. He enacts his part with utmost honesty & conviction. Ritika Singh is brilliant. She makes a smashing debut, matching up to the mighty Madhavan at all times. Nassar is flawless, as always. Mumtaz Sorcar excels. Zakir Hussain is perfect as the antagonist.

On the whole, 'Saala Khadoos' is worth watching.

Very refreshing to see Hindi film with meaningful content. Air Lift and now Saala Khadoos. Maddy and Ritika has done a great job and for a small film its amazing to see what they have done that big filmmaker fail to do. wish more of films like these comes out of our bollywood.

The technical details and able to have a realistic fights like what Ritika has done is very believable and sad to know that we have talented people in every field but blocked by these goons politicians. as Maddy said correctly in the film, remove the politics from the sport and you will find champions in every ally of the country. imagine what India can do in Boxing, and other sports, how about Soccor qualified for FIFA?

Brilliant movie. great active, great direction. Nothing is missing in. Complete love story, sports movie, thriller, comedy, glamor and much more. I would rate it as Madhavan's best active ever. Female character ( Ritika singh) is fabulous. First time i got to know there is such actor in industry. I was forced to search her name after being impressed by her acting. Jalli pataka was awesome, Superb dance. Simple but best choreography. This does not mean all other actors did not well. every single character of this move did best. Very nicely covered pain of non-cricket sports in India. how badly and from which class they are coming. There are many such in India who can bean international champions but not happening, you can see in this move how and why ?.

Director and writer of this film , Sudha Kongara work is very good. Story is inspired by true incidents and is good. Screenplay takes it far ahead in sweet and creative way, which enhances grit and innocence of characters, like when all touch coach feet, lead girl shows attitude and eventually touches in an emotional note, light scene of religion change, holding a characterless head coach by his crotch. Even the Changez Khan example and its incorporation in climax is intelligent one. The way lead girl expresses her love for coach perfectly goes with her character and its sweet. Dialogues are real and interesting. Like Main 'Kachra Ki Peti Nahi, Kachra Ki Beti Hun', Daaru Peete Waqt Lever Fry Khane Se Apna lever Kharab Hone ki bajay Khaya jane Wala leaver Kharab Hota Hai'. These lines look normal but the place it come, make it more impactful. First half looks fresh and gives a real feel. Moves on good pace. Second half is a bit slow and somehow it looses its realistic value. Especially in climax fight, when they used cable for extra sensation but it goes a bit above because film was maintaining its real feel since start. Main highlight of this film is its performance. R. Madhavan is first rate. Ritika Singh as Madhi is just fantastic. Her energy and performance make two songs visual treat, one song is 'Jhalli Patakha' and second one 'Dil Me Hua Ghotala'. Mumtaz Sorcar as Laxmi is very good, especially in confrontation scene with coach in canteen. Naseer as Junior coach is very good. Zakir Hussain as head coach is too good.

Excellent direction, excellent acting, nice screen play. Unexpected reality movie from Bollywood. If you have played any games in the ring or if you truly have experience of sports in India, this is perfect movie for you. It will hold you from start to end. Madhavan and Madhi(Female boxer) have done great job. Hopefully this movie will do good at box office so Bollywood gets inspired to make such movies instead of Melodramas or boring superstar movies like Prem ratan dhan payo etc. Story is completely roaming around boxing. It covers the real face of politics in sports which provides the suspense in the movie. Good fight scenes, good direction and screen play. Must watch in theater.

In these kind of sports movies you already know the story, so the predictability doesn't bother me that much. I watch them for the journey, for the efforts of the characters, and for their magnetism to pull me into cheering for them. This movie lacked in all these aspects.

The story is nothing new, same old journey of an underdog player and a coach that has problems with the system. This should have been the weakest link of the movie. Everything else had to be better than this 'done a lot of times' story for this movie to be good, but that's not the case.

The screenplay, dialogues, direction, editing, songs, background score and acting, everything seemed forced. It all wanted you to feel that the makers of the movie mean business. That they are making a realistic movie about the problems and harassment faced by women athletes in our sports system. But it failed to evoke those emotions. Every character seemed to be doing things just because the script demanded it. No one seemed to care to connect with the audience. Every scene was just there to make you spoon feed the emotions, be it comedy, drama, or action. The movie lacked a natural flow. It felt as if it was treading a path that was constructed for it.

The - not giving a rat's a** about anything other than one player who seems to be bursting of talent - attitude of Madhavan's character was too unreal. Everyone else too seemed to be acting their parts out rather than being the character.

The portrayal of how things work in a women's sport in India was clichéd. It didn't make you feel for the poor girls at all. The connection that should've been there by the end of the movie with the player and the coach was not there at all.

All in all, it seemed to be a shallow attempt at a story that has been done a lot of times but still has the potential to make your heart feel and cheer for the characters. Pathetic screenplay, poor acting, empty dialogues, shoddy editing, soulless movie.

The worst part is that it's rated a 7.7 on IMDb. And that it is in the top 125 Indian movies on the site.

I'd like to believe Indian cinema is better than that.

Overall I would say that after a long period bollywood gets a good sports movie...

Its a good movie about boxing. Madhavan sadly would probably not pull crowds of a North Indian audience. But it's freshly made, has a reasonably good story going, and good acting by Madhavan, Nasser and the fresh kid off the block. I was told by a friend the difficulty Madahavan and Co had to face to get the moolah flowing. Its a tragedy because mindless blockbusters garner crores for a senseless plot whereas honest attempts get shooed down to the dustbin. I would like people to see such cinema to at least promote more story tellers, craftsmen and technicians to make such cinema.

I could identify the character of the girl ( may seem overacting by some) had I not seen the carbon copy of the character hailing even from the same city !!! Hence it was okay to me. Music should have been better.

Wont go into critical analysis of the movie. There are several. However overall I was happy with the attempt. I wish to see more movies about normal ordinary human beings in India. In landscapes which I can relate to. And I wish people believed and funded such beautiful stories. So what if the story is clichéd ? Makes for a fantastic emotional salve anytime.

Good attempt. Could have been better. But still bewildered if the hair style of Madhavan was meant to hide his immense cute appeal?

Madhavan makes a kick ass comeback, and boy oh boy, he does pack a punch. Fully into character, Maddy, the veteran actor, performs his role with utter ease.

Sorry Maddy, but Madhi(Ritika Singh) totally steals the show. Being a north Indian and playing a role totally foreign to her, it is absolutely astonishing how she pulls it off with absolute perfection. As a fish vendor and a boxer, she fully gets into the role and expresses well. From the cute expressions, the local kuthu dance to the knockout punches, Ritika excels impeccably. She is a dynamite.

The music is fresh and soulful. The screenplay is slick, and clocked at under 2 hours, the movie entertains the audience at all times.

Pros: The débutant's (Ritika) amazing performance, Maddy, Santhosh Narayanan's music and bgm, direction by Sudha Kongara. Cons: Can't really think of anything

Overall, it's a great film, with soulful performances by the lead actors. A must watch!

A short and sweet film directed by Sudha Kongara. Rajkumar Hirani's second venture as a producer in this year. R. Madhvan is a leading actor, as well as the co producer, too. And some additional dialogues have been written by both of them. Story is of a girl from Chennai. How she met with boxing coach and what made her to learn the game, are all you find in the first half. There is also a little bit of a love factor, which will not bother you at all. Some songs and funny moments are there, too. Post interval, the effects of politics on the game and the associated people and some fights have been placed. End is obviously predictable, but the manner is good. Even because of no unnecessary scenes and with only around 100 minutes running length, the film is more interesting and engaging than Mary Kom, as per my experience. Madhavan has acted very well. Looks like a perfect Khadoos coach. Ritika Singh has delivered a good performance, she looks cute as an innocent girl in most of the scenes. Nasser and Zakir Hussain are as usual good. Music is good. Lyrics by Swanand Kirkire is superb. I'm gonna download the whole album. Swanand has done a cameo, too. We can say that a nice one time watch movie for this film. It's not a must watch. But, it'll not bore you! Give a chance to this low budget film, as no other good movie is releasing this week.

There are flaws, there are desperate over acting, but despite all the drawbacks Saala Khadoos comes out as a landmark in sports movie in Bollywood. I don't know why time and again boxing has been a popular choice among filmmakers. Boxing has been featured in more movies than even cricket. Now, that's remarkable considering the status of the sport in India. Surely there is something in boxing; the grit, the killer instinct that makes viewers sit on the edge of their seats. The director has done the first right thing in selecting Ritika singh in the lead, she is actually a mixed martial artist, has represented India in 2009 Asian indoor games. She has executed a the role of a perfect angry young girl. And then there is good old Madhavan, who fits in his role as boxing coach like lock and key. I have felt some of the songs could have been removed, the erratic behavior of Madhi's elder sister is also sometimes undecipherable. But at the end of the day the movie wins because it has not made a mockery of the sport, it has showed true grit, true passion, true boxing. Yes, Saala Khadoos wins.

This was one of the movies which was on my watch-list and I am quite happy that a movie on such an important topic has been made. Two very strong messages are in this movie. One, is towards women whose lives have been stereotyped into the ground. This movie is in a way, an inspiration for women who really want to pursue boxing as a profession. Two, is how politics and rivalry blinds people from seeing the good of the nation. This has been a recurring problem in the world of sports, where political agendas has come in the way of sports in many forms.

The story here is an underdog story. A coach with tremendous talent has been transferred to Chennai where boxing is not so prevalent due to rivalry with the Head of the Staff. A rowdy girl who is born to box is noticed by the coach and he wants to coach this girl in order to bring back women's boxing and to redeem his image in the world of boxing.

The most stand-out performance is given by Ritika Singh as Madi. She is rowdy, arrogant, angry and also lovable at the same time. She completely immersed herself in this role and produces a character which will be remembered for a long time. Madhavan as the angry, frustrated coach is also pretty solid. I have seen Madhavan do very normal roles but this was out of the blue. Often when an actor comes out of his comfort zone the character falls flat but not in this case. Mumtaz Sorcar as Lux follows a very dark path but as this is Hindi cinema, she redeems herself at the end. The only person who couldn't come out of the stereotypical portrayal of the villain is Zakir Hussain. He doesn't do anything special and doesn't even try to under-act. He does the dialogues like the villains from the 8o's. For me he was the weakest part of the movie.

In terms of direction, I really liked the cinematography. The silent moments. But then it was shattered with the narration. Bollywood is still afraid to NOT explain things. This movie is pretty simple so it is predictable what will happen so the narration and pace should be crisp so that we can feel the punches. The fighting scenes are very bland. After watching movies like Rocky and Creed and SouthPaw, a little more is expected from a boxing scene. The songs are fine. The over-use of dialogue pretty much slows down the movie. It is time Bollywood stops underestimating the audience.

All in all it is a fresh movie. A change in the current lot of movies that are coming. A must watch

I did hear good reviews about this movie but didn't expect it to be really so soulful and engaging. the screenplay and acting were really faultless and so was the casting of this movie. it's a lot better than other high budgeted movies of late. especially Ritika Singh with such a energetic acting stole the show. Madhavan also seen in a very good role since 3 idiots. I recommend this a must watch as it has a lot of soul. a real applause to the director, editor and screenplay. I hope this team comes up with similar soul based movies in the future. I don't have any problem with other directors or actors but honestly its better than the Mary KOM movie and I feel Mary KOM movie should have had the same intensity as Mrs. Mary KOM is a very respectable personality and her movie should have been with the same intensity. this is an example as to how important director, screenplay and editing plays a big role.

Other than lots of shouting, this film is basically a collective remake of all the rundown sports dramas that have released in Bollywood in recent years.

Adi (Madhavan) is a reckless boxing coach who has an ugly track record of his personal boxing/coaching career, which has rendered him tasteless in his sport's fraternity. So, when he bumps into a petite fisher-woman named Madhi (Singh) who also happens to be a better, streetwise boxer than her elder sister Lux who is a professional boxer, Adi quickly sees the world in her and starts training her for the World Championship. After a series of ON-OFF story manoeuvrings through plain bureaucracy, poverty, jealousy, hotheadedness, and sheer madness, Madhi dots the i's and crosses the t's, puts on her gloves, and shows what she's really worth, as a normal human can so obviously predict.

The biggest problem with the film is that the story is so predictable the trailer is enough to understand the plot. A poor girl - coach with a bad history - training - drama - politics - training - streak of romance - inspirational theme song - inspirational montages - success - is what all sports drama intrinsically talk about. And Saala Khadoos is no different.

Talking about performances, Madhavan wins the shouting competition, while Miss Singh comes in second. He gives a good performance, though, unlike the newcomer. Hussain is fine, too. Overall, the cast do a good job as they have been directed well. So the whole blame is on the lousy script which is too commonplace to fall in that "based on true stories" realm.

BOTTOM LINE: Saala Khadoos is a stale, formulaic boxing drama that has been made rather lazily maybe because halfway through even the makers realized that what they were making is below average. Better than Mastizaade, though.

GRADE: D-

Cameraman captures some beautiful scenarios in all songs.. Comedy scenes by Kali makes you laugh. At the end, the movie shows when the boxing was recognized in India?. I highly recommend this movie and support feminism in Tamil cinema...
