This was exceptional beyond words. I don't like subtitled films let alone 55 episodes of subtitles but this I was just immediately immersed into. There's something about the History and the dynasty that is so captivating and intriguing you just need to watch more. The storyline is unpredictable and the twists and turns take you on a journey you won't forget. It's an education watching it understanding is another facets to this beautiful story. I wish it never ends ... I feel I'll watch it again as I'm sure you will find out more second time around !
My brother who never watches Asian dramas, not even a two hour movie, let alone 50 episodes. I convinced him to watch only one episode in exchange of beers and snacks lol. He couldn't stop after episode one and bing watched it for 3 days straight! :D
This series is my all time favourite followed by "Mouse". The plot, the tension, the acting. Everything is phenomenal and makes you get carried away until the very last episode. I have watched all popular kdramas and western shows. Nothing comes close to this. Just one thing you need to focus though. There are many characters and names. Don't be confused. The quotes in this series are also life changing for me. I couldn't get over this series even after a month.
This work of art only explores the multitute of human emotions laying bare the complexity of human interactions and the unpredictability of life in every possible way that it feels wanting for more even after 50 episodes.
The story is mainly about the founding of the Joseon dynasty with a smattering of star crossed lovers. It lasts for 50 episodes and most of them deal with the court intrigue and power struggles over many years but manage to hold your interest by their clever twists and turns. I would have given it nine but for some odd reason when a character first appears on screen and often subsequently they tell you their future status. If you know for example someone is going to be the king of Joseon then you know whatever predicament they face they will survive, at least until they become the king of Joseon. I did not like any of the main characters at the end because they all had serious shortcomings which is not a bad thing as it made them more human. The only character I liked and felt sorry for was Cheok Sa Gwang a deadly assassin, which sounds odd but hopefully you will understand when you watch this excellent series.
Non-stop excellence, each episode was engaging. Fifty episodes was not enough! The writing, the acting, the visuals, the sets, the characters, the action, the music, the costumes are all stunning. This is a classic for so many reasons.
This is a telling of thee life story of how Lee Bang Won became King of Joseon, by the same writer of. Another sageuk classic, "A Jewel in the Palace." The story is compelling, even with the complicated politics, relationships and ideology about how a nation struggled to reinvent itself. King Taejon's complicated rise to power and lead the new nation followed actual history.
This drama is so entertaining and educational; a "must-see" for fans of sageuks, After seeing hundreds of K-dramas, this tops my list.

- QuizThe title is a citation from the poem Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven. It was compiled as an official affirmation of the Joseon dynasty. The dragons represent the dynasty's ancestors: Mokjo, Ikjo, Dojo, Hwanjo, Taejo (Yi Seonggye), and Taejong (Yi Bangwon). The flight of the dragons is the Joseon dynasty's rise in accordance with "the Mandate of Heaven."
